I have done the same thing two or three times. And I always says: "Damn you compass" Ten minutes later the compass is right and my gutfeeling was wrong.

Good points. We carry a compass not just to confirm our intuitions when they are right, but more importantly to steer us right when our intuitions fail or lead us astray.
