All4ParLap. Here's hoping I am understanding your question: the harness that the standardbred racers wear is slightly different; racing gear consists of a breast collar, neck strap, martingale, and overhead checkrein; pad, girth and crupper. The shafts attach to the girth. There is no breeching. Pacers often wear hopples to help maintain the gait and discourage them from breaking (the gait). The same rules apply to the donning and removal of the harness. Hope this helps ;-)
on a Liverpool bit which way does the smooth part of the bar go (up or down to the tongue and why)many thanks once again for a 5 great posts. can't it go either way, if u have the rough part on the tongue isn't it more servere, :S not sure n i'll never rlly know cause im training my pony with a bitless bridle.
hi, i know of a newer video/dvd called between the shafts not used it in a while so cant remember each exact point but the woman shows a very good detailed explantion of harnesing up, putting to and driving(i'm sure theres other points too but cant remeber) there is alsoa follow on dvd/video called double up which shows progression onto pairs
Hi There Is it possible to get a copy of these Carriage Driving Videos? My daughter is studing at Capel Manor in Enfield and is making harnesses and would love to have them as a reference.
Hi manuelcat great set of videos they have helped me greatly with my tacking up and putting to with me being a new whip and not having anyone local to ask there advice, just 1 question if you don't mind on a Liverpool bit which way does the smooth part of the bar go (up or down to the tongue and why)many thanks once again for a 5 great posts.
In what way? These were done over 25 years ago! The fashions may have changed but the method of carriage driving hasn't.

No problem, I am glad you found them useful. They were filmed 20 years ago but the same ideas apply today!

Is this the same if you were tacking up a pacer or a trotter for races?
