  • I have been playing for 5 years and I still can't even comprehend most of the stuff Vinnie does. He is on a whole different level.

  • Quienes serán los 7 ajenos al deseo de vivir o tener sexo que pusieron "no me gusta"?

  • Dude!

  • @supatol i hope he adds me.

  • old man's still kickin it!

  • the keyboardist was updating his facebook as he played.

  • @AustinxEdge91

The keyboardist is called Herbie Hancock ;)

  • @supatol THE SMILE ON HERBIES FACE AT 1:21 IS WHAT MAKES A DRUMMERS WORLD GO AROUND THAT SMILE IS PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @baileydrum

This is the moment where I miss the "like" button

  • Técnica única !!!!

  • Neil knows where he lies in terms of a Jazz player no doubt. My hat hoes off to him for releasing something he has not masterred.in this business of fragile egos, he comes out to me real and honest and he is striving to go where he is not comfortable.Be is learning....and in front of the public! That is a humble thing to do.

    Good for Neil!

  • Despite the insane parts Vinnie is playing, he still finds a split second to push up his glasses at the one 1.00 mark. Hilarious !!

  • @stretch54 Joe Morello does the same glasses thing in one of the early black n white vids of "Take Five" with Brubeck.

  • vinnie played with Zappa. nuff said.

  • Lemme fix me some Terry Bozzio videos.

  • is vinnie using evans here??

  • Isn't that Nathan East, the bassist of Fourplay...on the bass?

Man, Colaiuta is just outstanding. Just experience and excellence at work.

I got my tickets for Sting's Back to Bass tour next year where I believe Vinnie will be back as his drummer so I am excited to not only see Sting playing his music (and some of the Police' music) live at last, but to see Vinnie laying down the groove would just be EPIC!

    Thanks for this upload.

  • meh... i'd still say danny carey is better

  • @iWentToNam

except that vinnie can play everything carey can imagine...but carey can just do a fraction of what vinnie does...

  • @iWentToNam I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily, as I'm a huge danny carey fan, but just as a counterpoint I'd love to hear what Danny Carey thought of vinnie's playing, or if he found any influence there. I wonder. Both are great. Danny Carey is just...driven by some paranormal force.

  • @iWentToNam ha. haha......hah! hehhehe. HAH! haha.

  • NOW THIS IS A DRUMMER!!

  • O- M- G !! orgasm to my ears!!

  • all time fav!!!

  • Stop comparing a drummer to an other ! Just open your ears, it's MUSIC and Vinnie is so easily recognizable. If you don't like him just check an other drummer who plays great for you. To me he's uncomparable.

  • 2:43 :D No need to mention that, without a doubt, Herbie Hancock simply owns the keys! But when he taps the touchscreen to change the sound, he seems just like my own grampa using a computer for the first time. Love it!

  • OH WOW!!!!

  • nathan east is such a cheesy smooth jazz player

  • @basehead617 ...lol yet he's played for everybody on sessions including Herbie...He's a musician not just a genre player. :)

  • Top of the world .!

  • I caught this band except they were playing with Dave Holland and Chris Potter, and they played Actual Proof. Sickk!!!!!!

  • the next idiot trying to say how 'good' Neil Peart is in the forum of a Vinnie clip needs to be thrown from a helicopter.

  • Y'all can say what you want too... The fact of the matter is that HERBIE IS FEELIN' HIM (1:21)... And that's ALL that matters...

  • isso sim é musica pra se ouvir, assistir, apreciar,

pessoas com talento! sabe o que esta fazendo......

    musicos, isso é soberania musical!

  • Neil made me wanna play drums. He inspired me to. However, his purpose was to play for Rush. I've seen him play pure jazz and he was very stiff sounding. But when I listen to Rush I freak out wanna play every note bcuz his parts are so great. There are very few drummers who can play all styles, just as a singer has his or her voice usually only suited for one style. Versatily is an EXTREMELY rare virtue, practically non-existent...

  • @TimCannonSolo STEVE SMITH does and does it well:)

  • see he dyed his hair a bit.... eheh.

  • alone in black..

  • Everyone plays differently. And everyone likes different people. So shut the fuck up and enjoy the music. I don't care if you think Vinnie is better than so and so or vice versa. Just enjoy the music. Guaranteed Vinnie and Neil Peart and Chambers would all get along if they met in real life, so why can't the fans do the same?

  • Blar, blar, blar, Neil Peart, blar, blar blar!

It's like the guy invented drums for Pete's sake.

Neil is indeed of God-like levels of drummer, sure, but to always have him as the "go-to" is so bloody annoying!

Think of Drumming as something overseen by a Mount Olympus, and on high sits not only Neil, but Vinnie as well. Neil sits comfortably in the Technician's throne, while Vinnie could masterfully sit in the Groovemasters one. I bet even Neil would agree!

  • The most complete drummer in the world!!!

  • Music Gurus..all on one stage!!

  • @svantebeaverman Oh, man. You don't know a lot about drumming, do you? =P Drumming is about skills (of course Neil Peart got a lot of skill), but if you can put down a improv-solo like this with "only" such a drumkit, that takes skills. Don't get me wrong, Neil Peart is a great drummer, but he's limited in his solo's and can't play jazz or related genres like funk, where you can't practice every single beat you're putting up. :)

  • @supatol I'm pretty sure Peart can play Jazz and funk style drumming. The dude's been influencing great drummers for well over 30 years now. I'm sure Peart can handle anything, I mean don't get me wrong Vinnie's the man too...but when you get to that level of skill I'm not so sure drummers can be differentiated so easily. I mean who's to say that Neil or Vinnie is as good as Danny Carey or Blake Richardson? I think when you're THAT skilled it's all a personal taste.

  • @supatol Peart did an hommage to Buddy Rich that was actually quite well recieved from the critic and the public. I personnally don't like him as a drummer, but he's pretty efficient even when he can't learn the whole chart by heart.

  • @Beaudereck actually not true. He took a lot of poop from drummers who actually understand how to swing.. and does not matter about charts because Neil does not read music, and neither did Buddy Rich, did you know that?

  • @supatol Neil peart was trained by jazz drummers, the reason he shows no improvisation in his solos is because rush is an INCREDIBLY technical band

  • @remydrums thats horsepoop, he was self taught, and until 1994 did he take any formal lessons, and it made him a worse drummer. Neil has no swing, cant play anything but rock and progressive.. his burning for Buddy thing was quite horrid.. listen to steve smith for correct swing.. Weckl for latin and progressive Jazz.

  • @delweine it's not horsepoop, he says it himself, he studied with some really famous jazz drummers. i mean, i'm not saying he's better than vinnie at all. vinnie's solos are crazy more enjoyable.

also being self taught does not make you a bad drummer, if anything you have natural skill if you figure stuff out on your own.

by the way i saw steve smith live last month....he is a god

  • @supatol Actually, he can play Jazz. Maybe not that good as Vinnie can, cuz Neil is rock drummer, but u can see Neil playing Jazz on Buddy Rich Memorial. Anyway both are awesome drummers.

  • @Alganis123

Neil is a good rock drummer, put the disagreements aside! Why split and divide?

I just think that most jazz or otherwise is better left to other drummers who tried to master it...swing, feel, improv, whatever the devices may be. That is not what Neil aspired to sound like, and i do not hold it against him.

it is not in his character to make errors when they occasionally occur it sounds "off"

while some drummers can make mistakes sound so good...

  • @supatol Neil Peart produced and played in the two Burning for Buddy albums – he certainly can play jazz ;-) Nowhere near as well as Buddy could, though.

  • @callumacrae I didn't see the second one, but Neil's performance in the first BFB video was embarrassing, IMHO. He's a terrible jazz drummer. Sorry, but it's true, despite the fact that he produced those albums.

  • @tthueson I hadn't watched the video before, only listened to the CD – you're right, it isn't great

  • @tthueson so true. i don't want this to turn into some ubiquitous neil peart hating on/defending drummer argument, but you're totally on point. neil's jazz playing from that video is so incredibly sad.

  • @supatol I´m a Peart fan, but you are so right..

  • @supatol NEIL PEART HAS MADE HIMSELF A FORTUNE OFF SINGLE STROKE ROLLS. YA CANT GET ANY MORE GENIOUS THAN THAT!!

  • @svantebeaverman Vinnie Rules. Be interesting to see him up against gary novak. I recon he would give a run for his money, not peart tho. Different class.

  • @svantebeaverman

I guess I understand what you mean. Would be interesting with Neal Peart with a lot off odd stuff. But it's not appropriate to compare one drummer to another at this level. They are different in style and are both on the top level in their own.

  • @svantebeaverman fking loser are you kidding me?neil peart would kick your ass for saying that

  • @svantebeaverman Shut the fuck up about neil peart for two seconds please! I love rush, i love Neil's playing even, but jazz and funk drummers like vinnie, weckl and chambers destroy Neil Peart, Neil's playing was perfect for Rush, but the technical skill required to play any part of what vinnie is playing right here is present in no part of Neil's solo's.

I like neil peart, but he cant touch this guy

  • @svantebeaverman neil peart is the most overrated drummer ever.

  • can you believe this motherfucker actually still practices his ass off? it's like he coulda stopped in the 70s and still be a motherfucker

  • i love the fill at about 1:16 and so did Herbie. i keep coming back to this too. ya just can't help it.

  • uaaauu incredibile

  • vinnie's amazing - but his judgement in selecting the bands that he plays with must really be questioned.

  • @headforthetropics Even amazing musicians needs to make a living :)

  • Vinnie is in charge!

  • this erects my tits!!!

  • Someone brought up groove versus technicality. To me, groove is the BASIS of all technicality.

Without groove, you are just playing notes and therefore really not challenging yourself. Drumming is all about feel and texture, without that there is no true acceptable level of difficulty.

    IMO

  • THE KING

  • Some are Blessed... Git'm Vin!!

  • the king is at it again. herbie liked it.

  • some one ......WHAT RIDE IS THAT ???

  • Vinnie is a monster drummer! Paired with bass phenom Tal Wickenfield, probably one of the tightest rhythm sections around. Hope Jeff Beck includes them in his lineup when I see him in October. Ditto on the Gretsch drums-beautiful kit...

  • So nice to see Gretsch Drums instead of DW all the time

  • The thing I like most about this solo that, even though about half of the views are mine, I still hear new things and it amazes me even more. It's just more brilliant every time. But that's just my opinion ;)

  • I can't believe some of u young cunts don't even know the influence vinnie is on some of the best drummers. He is at the top and even better than weckl and chambers and they say so them selves. Watch the buddy Rich memorial of Dave,Steve,& vinnie.

  • @ediot6969

    Just listen to this guy

  • @ediot6969 damn straight. Vinnie is way up there with the drumming greats of the planet. He shits all over 99% of drummers out there... and from a great height too. VINNIE NUMBER ONE

  • @ediot6969 i agree that he's right there on top with steve and dave, but in my opinion dave did the most impressivve stuff in this vid. but all around i like vinnies work more.

  • @ediot6969 vinnie murdered that memorial

  • @ediot6969

    better than Weckl my ass

A fucking great drummer I agree but his speed & showoff don't make up for Weckl's funky feel, subtelty and superior technique.

  • @ediot6969 they really said that? anyway i didnt like vinne before for some reason cause i found him more to be a joke. but after this video i can say that he's about the same league as them. but steve gadd is not included in my list cause he's all groove and no chops

  • @ediot6969 i dont think vinnie is better than weckl, weckl is less lick based than vinnie, and in my opinion is better at jazz, but with that said, vinnie is the more accomplished drummer by far and is either #1 or 2 depending how u look at it

  • @ediot6969 It doesn't matter what they say. He's not better than Denis just different. Same with Weckl. In fact, I would say that Weckl has surpassed him. Steve Smith on the other hand isn't as good as any of the above.

  • @ediot6969 hes not better than weckl or chambers, non of them are better than each other, they all play in different styles and are mindblowing at different things, thats why they can be humble and speak highly of each oher. im 16 and ye its shit how the majoriy of kids dont know he depths of drumming, just listen to travis barker, hear a fill consisting of only hand o hand single and hings hes the best thing since sliced bread. dont get me wrong he has his good things in his own genre of music.

  • Seems a little more like ten past four to me.

  • Vinnie's timing is just ridiculousy astonishing...

  • OMG. Vinnie is absolutely unbelievable!!!

  • the must

  • Sick...

  • THE VIN MAN!

  • I thought that I clicked on a chad smith video, then I soon realised after about 2 seconds of listening.. it wasn't!

  • incredible. his kick ....

  • this music sounds like the old gran turismo theme music, or smash court tennis, truely uninspiring

  • This is one of the best solo's on the web!!!! Are you kidding me? How can any one comment on this? Its Unreal the amount of Talent Vinnie has..

  • lol at Herbie fucking up at like 1:15 and then his reaction

  • can't stop seeing this drum solo!!! why is vinnie so fucking amazing?

  • what is the size of that piano?!

  • and he looks like the acter Joe Lo Truglio

  • farr!! how pro is this guy man

  • wonderful christian drummer!

  • The drums need a cigerette after this cause they got fucked....hard.

  • WOW, ESTO ES VIRTUOSISMO, VINNIE COLAIUTA

  • Going to see them at the jacksonville jazz festival in two weeks.

  • Comment removed

  • @Listendudeok Acknowledged Duke twice, earlier in thread.

  • WWWWWWooooooooooooooooooooww!!!

  • @jefferyjarvis: It's a Korg Oasys, although who knows what Herbie might have in a rack, or in a Mac.

  • @rhythmatist: I agree, and posted as much below.

  • I'll take Neil Peart everytime...

  • Love Vinnie...but it's still just jazz. I'll take Neil Peart anyday when I want to get the blood flowing!

  • What is the time signature on this thing? Is there one?!

  • @benbutterworth

just 4/4, but the accents are scrambled around it

  • @supatol lots of syncopation too, and metric modulations, even though the beat is consistent throughout - if you counted 1-4 from the very beginning it would line up.

  • @benbutterworth

    itì's a 4/4 2 bars groove

  • @benbutterworth with colaiuta theres really no telling till you break down the songs. he switches from 5/4 to 4/4 to 7/4 and all over. haha

  • @benbutterworth

Its al in 4/4 execpt for the last 3 bars are 5/4, 4/4, 3/4

  • @benbutterworth the first hit that the band plays together during vinnie's solo is on 4.

  • @benbutterworth 4/4

  • @benbutterworth I saw a lead sheet where a section goes 5/4 4/4 3/4 in 3 measures.

  • @tuhsdxas

That is more of notation rather than time signature. Mixed meters and modulating.

  • @benbutterworth Most of it is in 4/4 but if you count it you can definietly tell that not all of it is.

  • drummer is boss shit band though

  • Technique from Weckl, Feel from Weckl, diversity and innovation from Weckl. Vinnie is awesome and up their with the greatest of all time. You say give you an example, look at the Buddy Rich Tribute concert where Dave played him off the stage. I have heard the same bullshit story about the Zappa audition and I know someone who was there. The only person who walked was Bozzio and he sucks anyway. Vinnie is class but Weckl is THE BEST end of.

  • @funkfanNo1 He didn't play him off the stage, I've seen that concert a million times, I love Dave Weckl, he's in the same class as Vinnie and Chambers and Gadd and Cobham as drummers that are at such a level that they don't have to back down from anybody. It's really just foolish trying to say any one is better or the best because they are all at the same paramount level of skill, the difference lies only in the way they individually speak through the instrument.

  • @PoeticJustice05 But you could say that one is better than the other at expressing themselves "through" their instruments, just as some people are better at expressing themselves than others?

  • @MrFootball102 No because guys like Vinnie are able to completely and honestly express themselves through the instrument. They just do it in different ways, as everybody's personality is different.

  • @PoeticJustice05 Steve Gadd backs down, but only because he has manners ; )

  • @PoeticJustice05 I can clearly see the cums being spread everywhere. Its normal though. He is the most insane drummer in earth. And i mean really insane, nuts.IMO its Vinnie-Jojo-Dave.I place Vinnie first cause he is the most insane of all and plays and performs ANYTHING from country to epic death pathetic metal.

  • @funkfanNo1 yes all those traits Weckl might be the best in but the fact is: Vinnie can do what is more difficult than Weckl can. Go to Drummerworld on Vinnie's page and then go to the Baked Potato videos. You are COMPLETELY right about the innovation feel and technique diversity and innovation from Weckl and i am in no way doubting you, in fact i think you are smart for realizing that Weckl has all of those amazing traits, Vinnie literally is from another planet BUT I enjoy daves style more.

  • @funkfanNo1 plus there is no best.

  • @funkfanNo1 Actually that story is from a magazine interview with Terry Bozzio about HIS audition. You're thinking of the story where Vinnie was sight-reading in 19/16 while eating sushi. Bozzio was there but he clapped, he didn't walk off.

  • @a1gold176

I don't know if Frank himself grooved that heavily, or if that was because of the players he hired; Ralph Humphrey, Chester T, etc...

  • @Ulprutt, I thought about George RIGHT AFTER I posted that! :-) Yes, he grooves just as well as Herbie. I don't think that anyone has Herbie's harmonic sense... big cheers back, mah bruthaa!

  • Re: "Zappa is more 'difficult' " - Frank NEVER, I repeat, NEVER had a keyboardist who grooves like Herbie. That brings me to the real question: Is it about groove or "degree of difficulty?" While it's all subjective, I'll opt for the latter any day.

By the way - anyone know the date of this performance?

  • @hapbarb

Don't know the exact date, but it was during the AVO Sessions in Zwitserland in 2006 ;)

  • @supatol zwitscherland??? you mean switzerland?

  • @hapbarb Well, while I see your point totally, I still feel obliged to mention George Duke, who did a pretty good job of grooving behind Zappa for quite some time in the 70s. Again, it's all subjective, and I love Herbie like crazy, just wanted to mention it. Cheers, bro!

  • @hapbarb

You bring up a good point but man, Frank NEVER was wanting in groove. He was one of the grooviest cats of his time. And he could do it in 19/16. Go figure.

  • @hapbarb umm he had george duke for a couple years on keys and vocals, and he grooves damn well if i must say so myself

  • @hapbarb umh... do you know George Duke?

  • @hapbarb George Duke is pretty groovy/greasy! Doesn't seem like Frank ever had a funk band. That was not his musical mission.

  • @hapbarb Judging from the intricate piece of technology behind herbie, i guess it's not too far back maybe 1-3 years

  • @hapbarb Funny, Zappa had someone in his band who grooved more than Herbie himself. I think his name was Vinnie Colaiuta ;) George Duke was also a grooving keyboardist. Either way it's pointless to compare. Just remember that Zappa had dozens of world-class musicians play with him through his career and to say that none of them grooved like Herbie is a bit of a stretch (regardless of instrument).

  • @hapbarb Well, he had George Duke. Listen to the keyboard solo in "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" from the album Roxy & Elsewhere if you are not convinced.

  • @hapbarb George Duke groove as far as Hancock, the concert of Stockholm (1973) or the TV show "Token of his extreme" are perfect proofs.

  • grande Vince!

  • Viinie you are going to break that shit!...

AW FUCK IT TEAR APART THAT DRUM KIT!

    Fuck yeah...

  • wow man Herbie Hancock and Vinnie Colaiuta on the same stage fuck that would be epic

  • @ryanandbranslurppiss

I saw them a few years ago together at North Sea Jazz. I went crazy when I saw that drumkit put on the stage. Epic indeed

  • at 1:29 when he does the double bass triplets around the toms.... and then snaps back to the beat immediately... i think i just creamed my jeans.

  • 1:34 That's how much the guitarist is enjoying the Vinnie's playing ;)

  • I typically really dislike Vinnies sound but this whole kit sounds great.......oh and the playing was outstanding as usual.

  • One word: MIERDA!

  • @kvg4541 I'm sooo sick of hearing Vinnie is the best drummer on the planet. Dave Weckl is so much smoother and has so much more control. Everytime I hear Vinnie do a solo he unintentionally hits a rim. Just listen to his solos......NEVER hear Weckl make mistakes like Vinnie. I understand people liking Vinnie's style better but, he is CLEARLY NOT the best drummer on the planet. Weckl, Gadd, Smith are SOME of the best out there today.

  • @mollyabbey1 Read about his Zappa audition. All the drummers that were lined up pretty much walked out when Vinnie played. He F'ing sightread 2/3rds of the Black Page!!! Uhhhhh...

  • @BeatProfessor Was one of those guys who walked out Dave Weckl.........Uhhhhh, NO! Just saying Vinnie is simply not as smooth and doesn't have the control Dave Weckl has. Therefore, NOT the best drummer on the planet. Why don't you really listen to Vinnie's solos...almost always hits the rim and not as fluid as Weckl, Gadd, or Smith, etc.

  • @mollyabbey1 NOBODY has more control than Vinnie. Not Dave, not Steve, not ANYBODY. Give me a Dave Weckl track showcasing his control and I'll match it with a Vinnie Track showcasing his. Give me any track you want. The same goes for Steve, or any drummer of your choosing for that matter.

  • @PoeticJustice05 I know you have your opinion but, NOBODY........Ludicrous

  • @mollyabbey1 Not opinion; fact. Nobody has more control than Vinnie. I know Dave and Steve and Dennis Chambers and maybe Billy Cobham are on the same level, but there is no drummer alive with more dexterity and control than Vinnie. Simply put, there is no getting better than Vinnie. If you strive to achieve the maximum level of achievement on the drums, Vinnie is who you aim for. If you want to see what I think Vinnie's best video on youtube is, check out "Vinnie Colaiuta Baked Potato."

  • @PoeticJustice05 Yeah, I'm sure Dave aims to be as good as Vinnie and hit the rim on every solo. Vinnie at the maximum level....it just keeps getting better and better!

  • @mollyabbey1 If Vinnie hits the rim, it's because he wants to, it's called a rim shot. I mean, how can you listen to this man's discography and say that he isn't one of the best of all-time? Did you even check out that vid I told you about?

  • The shit Vinnie is playing here is so difficult that it's ridiculous. Actual Proof is an EXTREMELY difficult song, and this guy is simply dancing around those band hits effortlessly. Breathtaking solo and musicianship!

  • @otb1234 This is all mainstream jazz/jazz fusion. When vince played zappas music, that was difficult!

  • @fadethetrade This is equally as difficult as Zappa's music. Its written very similarly to a lot of Frank's music, and in this case Vinne is blowing over a really complicated form, whereas even with frank's music, he didnt solo as much. I love this tune but I would be terrified of trying to blow over it. Just because Herbie got more attention than did Zappa does not mean that this music is any less complex or difficult; This is heavy stuff!

  • So Vinnie plays some fills during a spot in the song where he gets to shine, and some of you feel the need to imply that he's "overplaying." Guess what? Sometimes "less" is actually less. Vinnie's the man.

  • @bertrude123 Pardon me, but I agree on "less is more"..and the shit that Vinnie is playing here is actually LESS for him..talk about thousands of riffs and fills he did on the span of his career and never duplicates them..and he's still not "overplaying"..i think??? God he's a genius!!

  • what a phrase between 0:35 and 0:38?? unbelievable!! :P

  • There's nothing better than a live performance from this drummer!

  • I had Gretsch for years and I NEVER sounded like that.

  • @B007Dep1 lmao - you make Gretsch sound like an illness or something!! :-)
