  • Such an amazing Horse...I don't know where he gets that burst of energy from after running so long already in the race.

  • Ron Turcotte would have let him run through the finish, and the margin of victory would have been around 10 lengths. Eddie Maple eased him.

  • Thank you for this! I was there at Woodbine .. a thrill I will never forget. Secretariat was breathtaking to watch.

  • This is the third time you have said "case closed". Why do you keep responding?

  • The same thing happened to Kennedy Road in this race as it did to Sham in the Belmont. They both tried to outrun the greatest race horse of all time it was just impossible

  • @fklifter1 You mean Northern Dancer couldn't have beat Secretariat?

  • @MelC54 Its obvious you cant read Mel ive always said Secretariat was the greatest race horse of all time but the most important race horse was Northern Dancer because over 80% of the horses all over the world carry his bloodline not once but 2 or 3 times in some horses. He is considered thr greatest sire of the 20th century not only in North America but in Great Britain France Japan India Australia as well as many other countries,So its obvious you no nothing abouy TB race horseing. Case Closed

  • @fklifter1 oops horse racing lol

  • @MelC54 How could Northern Dancer beat a horse that was a living locomotive?

  • @gotch09 Maybe your comment is misdirected. I NEVER said Northern Dancer could beat Secretariat.

  • @MelC54 Perhaps.

  • The greatest to ever grace a racetrack in my lifetime. Frankly, Zenyatta is the closest I've seen to perfection since "Big Red." IMO.

  • I don't believe Kennedy Road came in second place here good buddy. It was Big Spruce 2nd & Golden Don 3rd. Where Kennedy Road finished I don't know.(smile)

  • @rscarbro100 Fourth...gassed,,,just like Sham at Belmont.

  • Kennedy Road was no slouch either and was on his home race course in defeat. Face it folks, Big Red did just about it all whether dirt, turf, 7F or a mile and a half. Horses like that come around about every 50 years or so. Finishing 2nd to Secretariat may seem like a loss to some but if I owned Kennedy Road I would have been proud of his performance.

  • @joefederico I have to agree. Kennedy Road was a great horse himself. He set a track record at Woodbine race track that stood for over 20 years. Secretariat was just that much better.

  • The closest for many years now, would have to be considered Zenyatta. Undefeated from 7 furlongs to 10 furlongs. On dirt and synthetics. She hasn't ever raced on Turf, but I suspect that as good as she's been on synthetics, that she'd be dynamite on Turf as well. JMO.

  • This is the anniversary of the race.

  • What a call by the announcer....."and the crowd is cheering because this is his last race....he's into the stretch in a blaze of glory-Secretariat, ladies and gentlemen he's all yours and he's coming to the wire........

  • what i dont get is...why doesnt he just take off flying? lmao. what a great horse.

  • @chakadoodledoo I think Eddie Maple said that Kennedy Road accidently bumped Secretariat or something, and then Secretariat just took off.

  • THERE HE GOES, THERE HE GOES!

  • Rather than get involved with the negative dialogue that seems to permeate this comment page , why not just watch and enjoy the greatest horse that ever set foot on a race track win his last race? We can all have our own views, but I prefer to just set in awe as Secretariat destroys another field of horses. I am just fortunate that he came along in my lifetime. I know the debate over who was better, Man O' War or Secretariat will never end, but compare the times over equal distances.

  • well said

  • he has such a high action when he runs

  • One of my favorite shots of Secretariat is this race when he's coming out of that last turn. MACHINE!

  • you got that right!!!!

  • Peace my friends, peace, be still... the great Secretariat speaks!

  • Just go way kaiser...it's that simple.

  • Who here goes to Carlyidiot's videos and makes comments? How is it that she just does not go away?

  • It is reported that Man O' war once dated Sir Barton. I read it in People.....or Horse.

  • Man O' War was a gay horse.

  • Secretariat never needed much coaxing. he was indeed capable of running his own race. Also, he in no way shape or form abused Secretariat. And Maple was incredibly honored and appreciative to be asked to replace Turcotte. He's a good jockey or he wouldn't have been asked.

  • Ahh! Some words of sense starz. I don't know what the hullaboo is all about. Of course I know carly's little comments can get under one's skin. If I had my copy of Ray Woolf's book out I'd find the passage which says Turcotte talked at length with Eddie Maple before race and surely Eddie knew he didn't have to whip this horse. I agree w/you. I've watched this race over many times and never thought I saw him whip S. Looks like was just exhuberant heading for finish and nothing was bothering Sec

  • Sometimes, a jockey must take a second or third hold, show the horse the whip, even tap the shoulder or rump to keep a horse focused. It's not Maple's fault that he had never ridden such a perfect horse before. I don't even know if he could have imagined how perfect Secretariat was until experiencing the ride of his life in this race. After the race, he probably fell to his knees and begged Secretariats forgiveness for forgetting he wasnt a real horse, that he was really a horse God!

  • I'm with you on all those points, and I don't understand why people to this day try to say Maple whipped him, when all he did was EXACTLY what Turcotte did with his stick at the end of both the Marlboro Cup and the Man o' War Stakes - he just flashed the whip in front of his right eye to remind him to finish off the race, that's all. Nothing wrong with it when Turcotte did it, so why the hell would there be when Maple did it? Total nonsense.

  • I have always wondered why Turcotte didnt get an injunction to postpone the suspension. However, Turcotte was a cool dude and always admitted that Secretariat could have been just as great with any rider. I believe that Turcotte fit Secretariat better than any. Eddie maple was hardly a shit jockey. Though, he was lucky to get the opportunity of a life time. And Big Red still won in style, against the wind and blowing all of them away.

  • Imagine the pressure on Maple to not lose this, Secretariats last race. He wasnt going to let anyone down, even if that meant to show the whip to the horse a couple of times. We all love Secretariat, but folks, would we even be discussing this now if Eddie Maple didnt take another hold on the reins and help keep Secretariat on a straight course? He really was excited to be riding the greatest horse ever!

  • My opinion: It looks like Eddie Maple MAY have tapped Big Red on the rump, almost forgetfully, as if he didnt mean to do it. OR as he was showing the whip to Secretariat, as jockeys often do, while looking back to see how far behind the others were. it kind of looks like he tapped him once, lightly. I hardly think there was any intention to whip the colt, and he wasnt whipped.

  • You are wrong. He was FLASHING the whip in front of his right eye. Turcotte did EXACTLY the same thing near the end of both the Marlboro Cup AND the Man o' War Stakes. If you cannot see that, then you are beyond the capability of seeing reality.

  • y was he destyroed in kentucky again?

  • Secretariat got Laminitis. That's the same thing that ended up killing Barbaro.

  • Secretariat needed Ron Turcotte in this race. I couldn't believe how Eddie Maple mishandled him at the end...what a shit jockey on the greatest horse of all time. He was using his whip and the reins. He's a disgrace. He didn't deserve to ride him in his last race. It's unfortunate that Ron wasn't allowed to..he would have allowed the horse to run the race the way Secretariat wanted to...He understood...

  • Secretariat needed no whip. I agree, disgraceful. You don't whip nobility.

  • @Tazzy5 Well said, I agree - Sec was a better athlete/strategist than Maple - It's a shame R turcotte couldn't run Sec in this final race; it would have been a stellar ending. Turcotte & Secretariat understood each other - A Great Team!

  • He did NOT whip him in this race. I've told you that before.

  • Watched it again, and I don't agree with you or anyone else. In fact, for reasons other than this comment, I don't wish to communicate with you anymore. Let's just you and I go our seperate ways. We don't have to play this out publicly, and this isn't due to your opinion about the whip or not. I categorically disagree with your opinion, but recognize it nonetheless.

  • Hey carly, let me ask you: What possible reason would you make a snide comment like that for? I told you in my previous comment that WE DON'T HAVE TO PLAY THIS OUT PUBLICLY. What that means (as if I have to explain) is that you have all the means to contact me so that, if you wish, we can hash this out privately. Why you would brazenly ignore that request is beyond me.

  • I see the young lady is up to her usual.

  • She has all my contact info, and can contact me at any time she chooses in order to avoid the pervasive nastiness that so often plagues YT and the internet as a whole. Instead, she decides to make a snide comment. Go figure. I am not going be a part of that kind of public spat, period.

  • It's simply agitation. Refer her to her high school football team. They can deal with it.

  • You, ONCE AGAIN, have ignored what I said in my original comment directed to you on this video, so I will repeat it: For reasons OTHER than this comment, I don't wish to communicate with you anymore. Is that not clear? I also told you that I do not agree with your position on whether he was whipped or not, but recognize your opinion nonetheless.

  • You just cannot leave it alone, and you always have to throw that last little jab in there, don't you? Look, I've been simple, direct, and dignified with you. I told you I don't agree with your position on whether Maple whipped him, and told you I don't wish to communicate with you FOR REASONS other than these comments. No need to wash the dirty laundry in public. How is that a problem? I have no interest in talking to you, either, which is what I said in the first place.

  • Are you going to back off of this untrue claim?

  • @cmf4321 The same way that you mishandled Eddie Maples big dick when you attempted to deep throat it and suck him dry back in 1978 on the Belmont backstretch??

  • are you kidding me last race greatest horse ever and this is the best video an absolute disgrace!! please woodbine forward the complete race and great call by daryl wells rip

  • He had an ancestor who was called the Big Train! I was surprised to discover Secretariat had Man O War relations! Sö tomorrow can Big Brown who has our Dancer as a gg sire win the triple crown? We sure could use something good! I was 11 when I watched Northern Dancer win the derby and preakness and we all cried about the Belmont. Smarty Jones too made us cry. History we hope is with us tomorrow.

  • My favorite thing about Secretariat is that he never looks like he's running hard. Just a gallop next to other horses running flat out. Just an awesome machine

  • The crowd wasn't exactly sitting on their hands were they? LOL. What a terrific response. Thanks for posting this, Dingerz.

  • Love this...wow that crowd...wish I could have been there....He looked like a living locomotive around that last turn.

  • I had the good fortune of being there for his last race. A "LIVING LOCOMOTIVE" was an apt description of how this awesome creature moved. He had a massive 'motor' (Hind quarter)

and a chest bigger than Pamela Anderson's.

    TRIVIA:

A horse called 'Big Spruce' finished second that year(73)and coincidently, second again the following year.(74)

  • LISTEN! to that crowd as he heads for the final turn !! "they're standing and they're cheering because this is his last race..."

  • A fitting ending to a superstar career! Secretariat riding off into the sunset a champion!

  • ...the big red breathing locomotive...

  • Wow this is footage I've never seen. Totally wonderful, except I'm crying!!!

  • My God I love this!! "THERE he goes.. Penny moves forward in seat, roar of crowd increases, and when the camera ZOOMS in on bleacher crowd AT SAME TIME as that guy stands up and lunges forward, wow!

  • Absolutely fantastic! Big Red truly was a horse for all surfaces without a doubt. Great footage!

Thanks a bunch for posting this.
