Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or do the weapons seem to use sprites instead of models? The lack of frame interpolation is one thing, but look at the weapon sway while you're running; it just looks like an image tilting left/right.
You care correct. The N64 version's weapon animation is brutal because of the boneheaded decision to use sprite versions of the models for the weapons. It still doesn't excuse or explain the lack of animation in the enemies though.
Is it really stupidly difficult? FPSs are hard enough to play with two analog sticks, and the N64 only had one. Trying to decide if I should get it or if I'll just go fucking nuts trying to control it.
Actually... I don't see much dynamic lighting going on here, and where are the nice little lens flares? And linear texel sampling just doesn't work with those low-res textures.
Once you get past the interpolation problems, this game's pretty fun. Fairly linear, but still fun for a while. Really, both console versions aren't without their flaws, anyway.
Wow, this port SUCKS! The gun animations are choppy, the sound clips for guns and enemies are garbage quality, the hud is FUGLY, and a bunch of the maps are just recycled from Quake II on PC. The only versions that do Quake II justice are PC and maybe N64.
Pretty bad game. Bad control, blurry texturing, awful animation on everything, and way too short (although this was probably a good thing). This game got way too much praise when it came out. Quake 64 is marginally better.
I honestly don't know how or why they could've fucked it up. Taking out hubs, taking out half the frames of animation, and blurring the graphics, even with the memory expansion.
Honestly You guys have no idea how fun quake2 for PC is.. To be honest Quake on Nintendo not so great.. maybe because the N64 Wasn't that powerful in graphics and such!
I play all of these games on the PC as well. And yes, PC Quake is very fun. But that doesn't mean the others are just as fun, but in a different way.
A good game is a good game no matter the system. Instead of playing just one version of Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem 3D, Descent, and such. Why not just enjoy them all?
It's different flavors of the same great brand of ice cream.

This game actually had a use for doing head/chest shots with the Super Shotgun on those "tresspasser" guys with clubs on their arms. It made them fly back.
They have to be. You can't aim as precisely with a console controller as you can with a computer mouse. Which is why lots of console FPS games have auto-aim functions, especially the older ones (I haven't encountered a recent FPS with any kind of auto-aim).
Actually, it's because there are less animation frames. There's no idle frames when you're not moving either. When you see the hyperblaster on the N64, it looks all kinds of messed up. Full 30-40 frames per second, half the animation. It really bothers me playing this version.

@wotanzorz The N64's controller is strangely awesome for FPS games. Generally the analog stick & middle trigger shoot, and the C-Buttons move you.

Quake is one of those games that I think Is meant to be played on PC and PC only. Any other console ports just don't give off the same vibe.

Because in the N64 version, you can run and walk.

I've never used joystick move before. Just the joystick look, with autorun on. So I've never noticed if it has different animation or not.
