Question: isn't that only with the thick plastic like windows, what you see in new buildings? I am curious if works different with older window glass...
WHAT NEW EVIDENCE, please, your a doctor sight your reference.
So let me get this right. If vitamin D is produced on, not in, but on the skin, how does showering lower ones endogenous levels? Are you implying that the cholecalciferol on the skin somehow pulls the cholecalciferol out of ones bloodstream? That would be pretty amazing.
Its not the sun that Deacrease your vitamin D. Its the showering. But a good sentence to draw attention to your looooooong movie about 1 simple thing.
"Oxidative stress" is not well supported by any evidence, and I doubt that it is the mechanism by which exposure to certain wavelengths increases the incidence of cancer.
Can you start citing papers in your videos, as it would encourage your audience to interpret risks and validity of treatments for themselves, instead of getting it second-hand from you.
Even if you mean well you are vulnerable to human-error, so this approch may be beneficial.
I think Dr. Mercola is quite brave to bring this information forward. Nothing will get you crazy looks like suggesting that the compulsive daily shower obsession should be questioned (except maybe suggesting the compulsive employment obsession should be as well). Whoops, a lot of you have already judged me nuts based on that sentence - but the facts are nonetheless the facts. If showering with soap destroys vitamin D on the skin, then it may be detrimental to your health. Happy scrubbing.
glad im a lazy bugger.. i dont clean my teeth everday either and when i do i use kingfisher non flouride. no wonder im so healthy .. couldnt work out why im never ill or have no fillings :)
Apologies, make that hypervitaminosis A, not D. The point was that Eskimos living on a diet of fish, seal, bear, whale do not die from hypovitaminosis D, obviously.
However hypervitaminosis D is a risk, calcification can occur in various places: kidney nephrons, arterioles, you can fall quite ill. Googling vitamin D gets you a lot further than Mercola's videos.
Frustrating, since I have also read that sunbathing too soon after a shower can be bad too, since you've striped your skin of it's oils so you're more likely to burn/acquire damage. Maybe showers are another plague of modern civilisation! Too bad it's not socially acceptable to bathe once a week :-(
I avoid D like the plague because as he says, it's a STEROID, not a vitamin. I need my immune system unsuppressed (how about you?). I will shower more often. Thanks Dr M!
BTW the term "anecdotal proof" is a contradiction. It is shameful to use ONE story (from a friend) as "proof" that will influence thousands watching this video. Dr M was cited on Quackwatch and twice had FDA warnings (Wikipedia)
Be careful about his "advice." He makes his living selling vitamin D etc. from his store.
Vit D is produced naturally by the body, you cant avoid it. Its a naturally occurring steroid molecule in the human body playing a critical roll keeping us alive.
Vit D deficiency is perhaps the biggest health problem since the industrial revolution when we became what is know as the modern caveman, spending most of our lives indoors!
Vit D deficiency is link to most immune related diseases & its highly recommended that you get plenty of sun (without burning) to ensure you lead a healthy life
Anyone who avoids vit D, will probably suffer the same fate as someone with the plague
Unfortunately, drug companies & governments stand to lose billions of $ from the knowledge that vitamin D has so many health benefits, this is because it cant be sold, its free from the sun! So be careful from the misinformation & denial by governments & drug corporations as they will do anything to keep their vast profits from falling!
well if your in the northwest like i am, in the winter months ther is not much sun. that is when i take a 500mg vitamin d maybe 3 times a week. in the summer i get sun. i have a natural olive complexion in the first place. so ehh.
Yes. most of us in the Northern Hemisphere only get the vitamin D producing part of the sun (UVB) for only 2 or 3 months of the year in the summer. At all other times it its mainly UVA which depletes our vitamin D. And the darker you skin, the less UVB gets through. High strength (safe) supplements are highly recommended if you don't get much sun exposure in the summer! Vitamin D is probably the most important thing your body needs if you want to live a long healthy life!
I agree that Mercola is a very subtly disguised quack with vested interests and whose style of advice (video-campaigning) is questionable.
However the style of whistle-blowing you're employing is a bit like flailing your arms wildly.
No need to try and scaremonger on the basis that vitamin D is a pro-steroid, meaning it is the precursor of a signalling molecule comprised of cholestrol/lipids. Sure "steroid" will scare people but it's not constructive. There's little literature on vit D...
@Teghead: So anyone who disagrees with the mainstream is a quack? The "style" of him using videos is just him using a modern media to reach a larger population than he would if he wrote this information in medical journals. If the only place you could find his information is through medical journals, how many people do you think he'd reach? Not many at all.
I just wish he'd cite evidence that shows the need for his advice, and shows that his advice might work. Leaves less up to speculation/paranoia. You can make videos to reach your audience, but it'd be improved by just inserting some links to the logic behind it. He doesn't half drone on though does he?
It's not on purpose, but, because of my job and lifestyle, I shower about twice a week. I eat right so I don't stink like most people do after 24 hours. I didn't know that it was good for vit d absorbtion, but I knew I wasn't getting all that flouride and chlorine in me everyday like everyone else is. Good to know.
Europeans had it right, my wife is going to get a kick out of this. I always told her that taking daily showers covering ourselves in chemicals, is not healthy, but it did not computer.
Oh, Mercola said it, as if it were fact. So it therefore must be fact. Even if he means well, he may not be representing the evidence accurately, it may not support his strong assertions. Please reserve your judgement til you see some evidence (waiting on that), especially if you're considering forking out any cash.
and also DONOT but DONOT aply and sun screen lotion on your skin, cause theres been studies that sunscreen lotion causes cancer!!! so, people WAKEUP!!! PLUS i almost foregot get a shower filter for your showers that might reduce the amount of toxins on your skin... so DO IT for your health!!!
Also, does it matter what soap it is? I use aloe vera soap, which is just a bar of 100% aloe vera, so would that reduce vitamin D levels if I used that on my body?
I think the title of the video is a bit misleading. Sunshine DOESN'T reduce vitamin D levels, but taking a shower with soap all over the body before 48 hours does.
Ah ha haha.... Many a day I had no time to shower and all I did is hit those key points ! :) Crotch and armpits are necessary key points under most peoples level of understanding - but I have known some that would argue.
Vitamin D is a critical level element that we need to have in our body. It's safe and free and you can supplement.
Nice Video Doctor, you have vast sources of information, your off at times and don't follow Gods word but all in all very good quality info.
You are amazing Dr Mercola, thank you for your passion for health, for the right information, for being honest and full of integrity! It's YOUR information and love for truth that gave me courage to OVERCOME SLE Lupus! Blessings to you!

What has soap washing got to do with the Vit D that is made beneath our skin due to sun exposure????????

OK, so Eskimos, who get NO sun in the winter and very very little even in summer, should all die of nasty diseases then? But they don't.
And note that breast milk - called the "perfect food" - is "deficient" in Vitamin D! Cow's milk too. We supplement cow's milk!
What is natural about supplementing these natural foods?
Like Mercola says, D a steroid, not a vitamin. A vitamin is something we must eat or we die - but the body MAKES D!
Take D at your own risk. This craze will pass.
thatcoolfrog 2 years ago
Eskimo's get vitamin D from their diet, all year round - in very high amounts.
PersianPaladin 2 years ago
Inuit people actually have a very high prevalence of vitamin D poisoning, from their dependence on a diet of fish, seal and whale liver.
