I cant belive they had the FL-9 still in 1994!!! I was born in 87 and now I'm into the RR becuase my dad is an Engieer and we love the FL-9. They looked so scarey lol, and very old fashion. I wish the LIRR atleast keep the GP 38's :(. Now they got those shitty loooking engiens that they use for passinger traisn. If I'm lucky I get to see the work trains that MP-15s. There only one thing to do, and thats get some Steamer back on these rails like the C&O 614.
When ABB rebuilt the FL-9's into FL-9AC's they sent 3 of them over to the LIRR while MN kept the rest. LIRR's were numbered 300-302. They received EMD 710 engines, AC traction motors, and were nicknamed "Spaceships." Needless to say they didn't work out too well.
@mrjv61- I never understood why the LIRR had the C1 bi-level cars and used those from 1994-95, but then we didn't see the use of the bi-level cars again until 1998-99 when the new DM and DE engines were put into service.
@mrjv61 Hay by and chance do you know what the LIRR did with them? They sell them off or they rotting away somewhere in a yard on Long Island?? Boy those would be great to see on the LIRR again.
C1's were built as the prototype to the current cars today. They were only compatible with the older equipment due to 27 point jumpers, and had the M1/3 type coupler that could only be used with the FL9AC's, and GP38-2's to which were modified to use with the C1's. And to run with the C3, that would of been costly to do.
I believe they were prototypes made in Japan. The current fleet is made in Canada or USA - not sure. The entire bi-level train at this time was a prototype to test the equipment out on.
I have always wanted to ride on one of these... Are there any still in service in the US

The c1 was a prototype of the c3. I think the c1 was in service from 1988-95. Then in 1998, the c3 began.

What's the difference between these C-1 bi-level cars and the ones that the LIRR uses today?
