Unfortunately these days, our conventional military has been cut back and spread so thin, that nuclear weapons are the only real deterrent to the overwhelming numbers of conventional forces and weapons that could be used against us.

Its not that far fetched. There's also innovations and improvements on the efficiency of renewable resources underway. Oil and gas will run out sooner or later. Plutonium and Uranium are sure to follow. Yes, nuclear power can temporarily replace fossil fuels. Renewable resources will soon make up a majority though.

Once we are energy independent we should be pouring enough money into the various industrial and scientific areas that relate to energy production and storage to be world leaders. If we have stable, safe and standardized designs for nuclear power, and electricified transportation infrastructure that would be ideal. Renewables are a distraction.

It's not true that one must have enriched uranium to make power from nuclear reactions. There are plenty of reactor designs that work on natural, unenriched uranium- for example, CANDU and MAGNOX both work just fine with the stuff as it comes out of the ground.

You have to think about the reason most of those "terrorists" are angry. Their countries are exploited, not only for their resources, but in other ways. Most of the time they just want to get their point across and be noticed by people. I was Military in the Cold War. We expected the bombs to be tossed around any second of any day. I knew this one Captain who had a picture of his wife and 5 kids always taped over the launch key. He told me it was so he'd turn it, because they lived in Chicargo and would be dead. It was a crazy time.

Though a lot of it is still in development(ion drives are used in spacecraft now which is more efficient). Nuclear energy is efficient source of electricity. It's not true that one must have enriched uranium to make power from nuclear reactions. There are plenty of reactor designs that work on natural, unenriched uranium- for example, CANDU and MAGNOX both work just fine with the stuff as it comes out of the ground.

You have to think about the reason most of those "terrorists" are angry. Their countries are exploited, not only for their resources, but in other ways. Most of the time they just want to get their point across and be noticed by people. Another thing - many of them are and were supported by the United States as a way to get to the Soviet Union and/or other terrorists. Like al Queida. I think they used them to combat Hezbollah and the PLO, way back when.
