@assym2006 Not all were 'scum' as you put it. As I remember, at least TWO were crimes of passion? And what of the scapegoats at Nuremberg? Let us not forget, a lot of Nazis were spared death because they could be of use to the allies! :-)
@assym2006 In principle I agrfee with capital punishment but Mr Pierrepoint (who you have to admit is quite an authority on it) says his time taught him that it does NOT work
@tortfsr Haha. No. But lincoln castle prison does, where they filmed the opening scene. They've never been very good at details. The woman who owns it is a bloody miserable cow, so she probably said they couldn't take the lights down! Miserable Cow!
@stcc11 I guess its hard to find prisons with the right ambience these days - its all paper doilies and flock wallpaper. Its a dramatisation - not a 100% authentic representation. :-)
I'm supporting the death penalty as a punishment. But only as a ceremonial punishment. When the murder or rapist is sentenced the punishment will be turn in 25 to life.
This movie nearly brought me to tears in some places, it brings up a tough argument. Though not really that related, the debate on abortion is a tough one as well. I'd have to say abortion should be legal for the same reason marijuana should be legalized, cause people are going to do it, one way or another, why spend tons of money trying to stop the inevitable?
Oh yeah, here's a thought, what if an 11 year old is raped and gets pregnant. Would it be horribly wrong to get her an abortion?
This is indeed a powerful movie about capital punishment. I am not sure that I agree with its statement, however -- it tends to show the perpetrators in a sympathetic light and the victims perhaps not so sympathetic. Which does not change the fact that the perpetrators are murderers, no matter how unsympathetic their victims.
laurenlfc48: Saving the mother's life is a rare exception where I reluctantly endorse aportion. What I object to is "Abortion on Demand". My objection is based on moral and religious principles you will probably never understand.
One more thing: My wife's last pregnancy was a rough one - I nearly lost both her and our twin girls. I asked her what she wanted me to do if she couldn't speak for herself - a very difficult discussion. Don't you dare give me this "you're a man" crap.
A person has dreams, friendships, family. feelings. They understand what is happening to them . Capital punishment does not deter people from crime but is more a outlet for the bloodlust and revenge of the people at large.
A six week old foetus is little more than a clump of cells. No hopes, dreams, expectations. There are already more people in the world than it can support. We don't need more and more people, especially ones that are not wanted.
I agree to an extent. I don't understand how people can actually 'support' abortion. I'm as liberal as they come and I can definitely sympathize with somebody who wants to have an abortion but it still comes down to the fact that once the egg has been fertilized that it is another life (not simply part of the mother's body). I don't think it's right wing or conservative to oppose abortion - it's just a concern for the child over the mother.
"But whereas the character Vera Drake was providing humane, efficient abortions in a time when it was illegal, ..." HOW THE HELL is chopping an innocent baby into little pieces HUMANE? Even the murderous mothers will tell you many years later that they killed their own child.
i think that we should still hang people why should people who kill take innocent lives live at the tax payers expence they dont go in for punishment now they go into a bloody hotel today sit on their backsides play video games and eat all at our expence i would put them in a cell with a matress on the floor feed them bread and water then hang them and not tell them when they are going to be hanged they would know when i walk into their cell
hi there if you think that i dont understand thats where you are bloody wrong , i will agree that some people were wrongly hanged but with todays DNA and forensics they can match criminals to their victims murder is wrong murders should hang and all these people who oppose the death penalty how would they like it if a member of their freinds/ family were murdered and the dick head who killed that person was sentenced to sit in a cell for 25 years im sorry to sound rude but its the truth
Harry allen was last british hangman. In one of his notes he put " could have done with longer drop" mmmmm . Pierrpoint was the expert.

@assym2006 Nazism was/is a political viewpoint. What happened before & during was much more than that.

Anybody who can kill another person (whether it be within the law or not) must have the murdering instinct in them.
This guy was a murderer and as bad as those who he hanged for commiting crimes. What is more some of the people he killed were innocent.

I can't understand people who oppose Capital Punishment but who approve of abortion.
wardenphil 2 years ago
I'm one of those people.
Imagine someone is pregnant but govong birth to child will kill her - the mothers life should take priority.
Before the abortion Act in the 1950s women were left to bleed to death if they tried to abort their child.
You will probably never understand - your a man.

What a coincidence - murder victims also have\s dreams, friendships, family. feelings. They understand what is happening to them .

Yes, but I am not advocating that we kill the families of murder victims.

I don't think you understand anything about it.
What would you think if they hanged someone and later found out they were innocent?
What about the moral stance of it?
It would clear the prisons , but risking an innocent human life is more than enough not to start it

Fascinating film and bit of British history,
it is true however that the British were the most effective at hanging in the world, hardly one of our finer qualities in history, but there you go.
The Ruth Ellis scene at the end was very effective.
But yes definetely worth a watch.
