As far as I know, it was also one of Liszt's merits to rediscover Schubert in full glory after a long time of partial forgetting. You can feel his deep respect and devotion to Schubert in this description.
The best version indeed!! Absolutley AMAZING!!!

This song reminds me of when I was a little kid my grandma used to always play it on a cassette tape for me. Thanks so much for uploading this!

It's addictive....Perfectly simple, in the best sense of the word. I love it!

Only Rachmaninoff could possibly pull something like this off.

Absolutely exquisite.

This is incredibly lovely playing - and devoid of all treacly sentiment. It is sublime, aristocratic pianism.

Is this another version? There is no "echoes" part (3rd time we erar the theme in conterpoint)
andrevazpereira1980 2 years ago
No,, he simply made a few cuts and revisions. They are almost negligible.

@andrevazpereira1980 there was clearly an "echo" part, he just softened it compared to Horowitz for instance.

Actually a Liszt transcription of a Schubert vocal piece.
This, by the way, is Rachmaninov's very last recording of anything. He died less than a year after making this recording...

@nextren Was also played by Horowitz on his last recording session, 4 days before he died at 86 on Nov 5, 1989.
