You deserve better? Why? You're the ones who keep electing the corrupt, who accept a culture of entitlement, ignorance and violence, who accept no responsibility and blame everyone but yourselves. And you've done it for decades.Deserve better? No, you richly deserve the bitter harvest from the seeds you've sown.
Agreed on some of what u say. But I've lived here for 3 years. I didn't vote for Ron Dellums or Jane Brunner (District One councilwoman). Both skirt around the issues you discuss. So I have not, as you suggest, voted for the same people for decades. Few people have the courage to run for office in this city with its violence, disorganization and suboptimal leadership. Long time residents cannot be blamed for their voting patterns. They simply had no choice in who to vote FOR.
The fact remains that a significantly large portion of Oakland has a vested interest in the thug and drug infested racist Your Muslim Bakery status quo. The politicos you mention and their constituents are direct beneficiaries of that status quo. And yes, this has been going on for decades. Its that way because Oakland LIKES it that way. If you doubt it just try speaking out publicly against it. Then get ready to duck-and be sure your insurance is paid up. Somalia's got nothin' on Oakland.
I lived all over in the area...35th and West, 44th and Market, 45 and MLK...they are renovating a lot of the area now, but when I grew up there in the late 80's and early 90's it was a lot worse....
would it be unfair to point out that Oakland has a high number of subsidized affordable housing on top of the existing warsaw ghettos?
Oakland needs more manufacturing/industry jobs -- of which Wall Street, NAFTA and our current politicians gleefully sent millions away to China Brazil and India.
An empire without an industrial base goes into debt, creates nothing of value except war, and goes bankrupt FAST. We should rebuild Oakland without the fedgov and corporations.
Hey...that's right around the corner from my 1/2 million dollar home! Awesome landscape...my family thought I was nuts and maybe I am for buying into this place. Isn't that MacCarther Bart going to be a 'transit villiage' soon and those motels are on their way out. I have seen some crazy/sad stuff there.
I have lived in East side Oakland over 40 years. We do deserve better. I wish we could make the mayer live on the flatlands and feel what it's like to live there instead of just hearing about it? Gee but it's good to get away from here whenever I can. Thank you for the post and recognition.
