@IAMLS360 He did against Andy Roddick. Although he was pretty angry at the time tbf. But yeah, 99% of the time ridiculous effort he puts in, pleasure to watch him.
amazing match, my favorite of all time. you can tell now that federer at age 29 is not what he was in this video. i don't think fed has any more major slams in him unfortunately :(
Alright, I am not a tennis player, so I don't really know what is like to play certain shots in a certain way; but.. is it just me or playing like Santoro, using two hands, only slows down your movements and also makes it harder to reach the ball in certain angles? If he used one hand/arm he would gain half shoulder in length when reaching the ball. Am I wrong? Again, I am just asking, I am not an expert... obviously :)
yeah you're completely right, two-handed playing styles always give you the problem of lacking reach. That's probably the main reason Santoro never broke into the top 10; his tennis was and is so beautiful and so technical but his style doesn't allow him to really exploit the sport. It's a shame, he's a magnificent player. A gift to the sport is Santoro:)
One-handers do get better reach for sure, both backhand and forehand, but using two hands allows one to hit with more power, more control when hitting against a big hitter and a easier time to hit high balls with all types of different two-handed grips. And I'm talking about the backhand because I wouldn't know if a two-handed forehand is really all that versatile as a regular one-handed forehand. I mean it does help Santoro disguise his shots because at the last second he'll adjust.
His talent alone (we cant really say he's a physical monster) allowed him to stay 2 decades in the top100. Over his career he defeated 17 world #1 from the likes of Wilander, Becker, Courier, Agassi, Edberg, Sampras to the master Federer. Safin, who lost 7times against him (for only 2 vict) said "Being told I would play Santoro was being told I was to die". Santoro is a living legend for his unique style, we gonna miss you the Magicien, nickname given by Pistol Pete himself! One word: RESPECT!!!
Santoro has a great defense and reflexes, incredible precision, way too many resources and tricks he uses depending on what new strategy he has developed in 0.2 seconds, speed, courage, the spirit you need not to kill points but work on them with intelligence and beauty, the willingness to give a great show to the people; the passion, courage and fitness needed to keep playing tennis at the age of 35, and stay in the ATP Top 100; and he's cheery and behaves well. How could people not love him?
@anonymous2431 Well, Roddick is a fucking kid compared to a gentleman like Santoro. When Roddick was on diapers, Santoro had been lifting up skirts ever since. So it's nonsensical for anybody not to like him.
Santoro is a nightmare to top players... Now you get why Federer admires him? This is probably the most beautiful match I've seen. So many winners and tricks. Santoro's objectives are different indeed, that'll make him a legend.
i take back all i said! he really is a good player, he moved federer around all over the court in this one, made some pretty good shots, really amazing, sorry!
they probably call him "the magician" because nobody gets how come a pusher/moonballer/floater is a tennis pro and has maintained himself around at that level LOL! yep he's the epitome of a pusher-playing style
Besides the ridiculous tennis, has anyone noticed that unless there's a sound/video lag I haven't been able to pick up on Johnny-Mac can tell when those moonball lobs are good when they're just getting over the net? o.O
Well... Federer knows how to wins matches... Although Santoro gets really nice points, especially against federer, federer has 9 victories against Santoro, while Santoro has only 2 victories against Federer
I think Federer should be playing Santoro all year round. Surely this is what people pay money to see.
This is how tennis should be,players playing to enjoy and not the Roddick and nadal kind where people will Gladly accept others coming on court tired so long as it gives them the advantage to win.
This must be one of the most entertaining tennis match ever.
Now i know why Santoro is nick named the MAGICIAN.The behind the back shot is amazing.
I think this is the guy Federer is emulating in his playing style, elegant, adventurous and entertaining. We need more players of this style. this is kind of match which gives you something to talk about all year round
Roger Federer is the best ever, in terms of quality of shots and play. At the same time, Fabrice Santoro is simply unique. He learned tennis in other planet!
WOW THE FUCKING TWEENER AT THE START!
ArjunJethwa 4 months ago
one of the funniest match I've ever seen, pure talent from both the sides of the net!
however it's incredible how Santoro, who was already rather old when he played this match, was able to bring to the limit Federer at his prime!
