My favourite Part starts at 6:11 . Great Piano Concert, i think it's very sad that it isn't played very often. Rachmaninoff was very young when he wrote this Piece, i think 16 or 17... Hats off, gentlemans.
Sviatoslav, simpático nombre. Eximio ejecutante. Tenemos rutas para el más importante instrumento de los últimos tiempos (el piano). Nuestro problema es cómo transportar su bella y rica instrumentalidad concertada sinfónicamente con la orquesta, a cuando tengamos que abandonar este pequeño mundo material.
Sorry about the mixup here. Indeed, Rimsky-Korsakoff's comment was directed to Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 1 in D Minor, but it could also apply to his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp Minor. Rest assured, I do know the difference here! As I wrote, Rachminioff was ahead of his time.
"but it could also apply to his Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp Minor"
Why? Rimsky didn't dislike Rachmaninoff's music generally. He made some technical criticisms. He liked the First Suite, op. 5, but thought the finale could be less cluttered. He liked the Symphony 2, op. 27, but thought the end of the 4th movement was over the top because it brought back all the work's melodies in a sort of quick review or parade. It was Rach who didn't like Rimsky's music - until much later (the 1930s).
I heard this concerto tonight for the first time. I can understand Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's comment to Rachmaninoff: "Forgive me, but I do not find this music at all agreeable". It isn't, but Rachmaninoff was ahead of his time. My favourite is still his second concerto with Sviatoslav Richter (Van Cliburn also does a powerful performance).
*gentlemen, i'm sorry.

Rimsky said that about Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 1 in D Minor.
This is Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp Minor.
You do understand the difference between a symphony and a concerto, right?

Fantastic. Kissin or Pletnev (or someone) should take up this beautiful piece.

Pletnev recorded it on Virgin Records about 20 years ago.

@nextren Ashkenazy made at least two famous recordings of this piece. His earlier 1971 recording is on youtube.
