basically, you are going to need to be fit to have the concentration to be able to do all the little things that make the difference between a bad player and a good player.
@voixraison - Thanks for the comment... I agree. Or even to make the difference between a good player and a great player! Of course, technical (skill) practice must be a priority, but fitness and conditioning needs to be addressed.
dude soccer is not football or other american sport.. if you wanna get good at soccer just play it like crazy and you'll improve with time... I played for my town team be4 coming to the US in 2006 and I gotta tell here 2 much time is wasted without touching the ball.. while in brazil absolutely no training in football with out a ball glued to your foot. soccer is a game of mind and skill. not muscle and power
I agree with you on some level: Technical development must be the priority; however, every sport at the elite level needs a fitness and conditioning program. To argue otherwise is ridiculous.
@EduKSA - Absolutely agree. Even in Europe, they do condition early on in pre season training, but from there on, you're always touching the ball. Dribbling, passing, possesion, set plays, free kicks, keep away, etc.
But you forget all though most countries are better than the US in soccer.. The US breeds far more Superior athletes. We are more mechanical and its only a matter of time before our expreience with soccer and our athleticism catches up.
some good exercises there.... the best basic exercise for football is i.m.o are though is 45 min/60/min runs ..for2/3 weeks...then playing five aside... and throwing in fartlak intervall running.. 1 min all out 100 % then 1 minute rest.. starting with 3/4 building up to 6-8 this will really flood your body with lact..acid.. this type of running is anaerobic and really does give you that extra stamina needed when the going gets tough. then u can do all the small stuff
Interval running is great... good suggestion re- Fartlak. Endurance is important, but I think the long distance running is over-done in soccer training. Also, strength and power (explosiveness) training is often neglected, so this needs to be done AT LEAST 2X/wk in off season, and at least once weekly in season, imo.
