I think you mean pre-Christian, going back to Elagabalus (which was still well within Biblical times). Even Mithraism wasn't really getting going strongly until about the time the New Testament was pretty much over. Of course, no one was celebrating Christmas at all back then.
What a pisser to find The Yule Log! When I lived in the NYC area as a teen, my brothers and I used to laugh and mock the Yule Log on Channel 11, but we loved it! We were 'closet yulies'!!!
