Ive got a DC 15e, plugged in sounds mint...not plugged in sounds very poor indeed (unless just had a fresh set of strings) Ive had it refretted once as its a working guitar getting played extensively 3-4 times a week. I got a really cheap martin and that sounds miles better? I play quite aggresively and it is getting harder and harder to play and sound good every time i pick it up...Does anyone elso have these issues with there Martins?
If you go to MelodeeMusic in Leesburg VA, don't believe anything he says. He'll say whatever will get you buy inventory that isn't moving if he thinks he can fool you. I have short fingers & he convinced me that a wider neck is easier to play with short fingers & I spent 2 hrs there & ended up spending over a grand on a Martin that has the widest neck they make.
I was wondering which other martin you would suggest buying that has similar tone and playability but not nearly as expensive? Like most people I don't have the cash for one of these beautiful guitars.
@johnnynocaster --> I'm a songwriter, and for that my 000-15S was the best guitar. If i where a instrumental guitarist the D-42 would have stayed. :-)
Now, I went to Guitar Center the other day, and I found a very similar sounding Martin for less than half the price WITH electronics (onboard Aura). The model (I think) is a JC-16RE. Trust me, it's good. Really good. And; it also has abalone D-28 style fret markers, abalone rosette, and Style 45 back-strip.
@swimologist8 I thought I'd heard all the Martins, but this is the first time I've ever heard the D-42. I'm so impressed. I'll add this one to my Xmas list too. ;)
Recently bought the D41 over the D42, The D42 had more overtones and the D41 had more Clarity, so i picked the 41, However i discovered the Difference between the D41 or D42 and the D45 is basically aesthetic. Those pearl inlays are pricey.
-jealous- I can't even post the type of guitar I am playing right now due too ......... embarrassment =[. But nice guitar I feel someone as talented as you deserves it. Great melody and style =].
I have a 2008 D-42 but it does not sound like that. I tried Martin SP and Elixir Polyweb. Can you post which strings you have on your D-42 please. Your D-42 sounds just beautiful.
I used Martin non-coated SP strings on this guitar, 013-056. This guitar was a true stunner!! To be honest it's a "one of a kind" Martin D42... strings really won't matter on this example IMHO :-)
wow - this sounds wonderful. I play D-35s. Of course those guitars have to be set up properly. When that is done, they truly sing. But this here one is fabulous. What things about it make it better for fingerpicking for you? Thanks. I also own Gibsons.
It's most likely expensive as fuck too! :D I mean, I'm not the acoustic guitar kind of guy, but I've tried one of the expensive models of Martin owned by the father of a friend of mine, and I gotta say. That's some of the best sound I've ever heard. I mean it was just perfect, I really got stunned by it, and so comfortable to play on for an acoustic guitar too.
Martin is really something for itself. I honestly believe they have the best acoustic guitars on the market. Truly beautiful.
Ok new to the martin scene here. Im going to nazareth PA, to the factory, to pick one out. I really like the 000-28, and i realize its basicaly the same as a d-28 but body size. anyone she dsome light on the subject for me??
I just bought a D-42 2 weeks ago. I was actually struggling between a D-42 and OM-42. The base of D-42 is deeper. However, OM-42 looks better with its shape. I know the sound is more important but I am still missing the OM-42 a lot and regretting to buy the D-42. Any comment?
You should always go with what you want and invest on, but the fact that it's in the D-40's series makes it more valuable in the long run. But it's dam nice to have both wouldn't it?
Thanks for your reply! I think the specifications of D-42 and OM-42 are almost the same except the body shape and size. That's not worth keeping both. I am now dreaming for the OM-45 Marquis instead of OM-42. I've tried it and the sound is superb. The Adi spruce in the top makes it very loud. The tremble is extremely crisp and bright.
If you can add in a grand or two you can get the rare golden era edition. The thing about the Marquis is the distinct similarity between the GE's. While the Marquis represent the "New Old" and the Golden Era the "True Old".
The Marquis uses modern tone woods and bracing patterns compared to the Golden Era's "pre-war" replica's, which is the original tone woods and bracing patterns that where used to originally make the model. Preferably a forward shifted X bracing pattern which aren't being used today ( Which the Marquis doesn't use). I don't know when the OM editions where published, but surely if it where before the 40's you got yourself a buy.
Nope i re-checked that the OM's weren't made in the 30's or 40's, but the '00" and "000" grand concert series where. It isn't as fancy as the OM-42 but has the same body. Try having a Martin dealer contact a custom shop to have it made that way, a Martin OM-42 with a golden era series of a 000-28! That sir would be a dream.
GE and Marquis are the same except for the use of Brazilian Rosewood in the GE (in case 0f D-28) and Indian Rosewood for the Marquis.
This week the introduced a D-18 marquis. Same thing: it a D-18GE but without the brazilian rosewood parts (such as headstock overlay). Back and sides are mahogany, obviously for style-18. Can't go wrong with any of 'em though. And D-42 sounds absolutely wonderful.
I purchased the D-42 over the OM-42, and yes the bass is deeper. I have no regrets, as I believe that I purchased the better sounding instrument. If it were a matter of looks and just overall playability, I personally prefer something with a cutaway(electronics would be bonus). Martin dose not make a D-42 with a cutaway so it was an easy decision for me.
I love both the OM-42 and the D-42, but I have to agree with you. The D-42 does have a better bass response and I love that deep resonant bass that only a Martin can produce.
fuck me, that was amazing. im just buying my 1st martin but unfortunately am only within the d1 price range. still, you have to start somewhere...!! great tune
Great sounding guitar, I would take a D-42 over a D-45 any day. The forward shifted bracing on the D-42 makes the top vibrate like crazy! (the 28, 41 & 45 don't have this, but the old ones did) I came sooooo close to getting one, but I ended up going with a new Collings D2H for a used price because it was in the store for a long time (and it had a 1 3/4 neck). There was definitely no bad decision to be made, as both guitars sounded so great.
Hey weeweepad any guitar you buy for 800 dollars isn't even worthy of being put in a martin case, much less sounds as good. I've had a Martin for fifty years and have yet to hear anything better. Someday you will find that out and spend the money on a good guitar.you all do eventually.
We tend to confuse good quality with good pricing sometimes. I personally prefer Elixir PolyWebs for two of my guitars. With 4 acoustic guitar in circulation, and a fanned-fret among them, I change strings frequently.
Strings? I have tried the Exilir coated strings and while they feel better, I'm not sure, but the sound of my D35 seems to be duller. Nice strings, but next ones will be Martin SP.
Excellent stuff! I own both the Guild D55 and the Martin D42, as do you. Good taste! The question is - Don't you think they are very very similar? It might be because the D42 is not a typical Martin it's richer sounding and better balanced in my opinion. What do you think?
A blueridge br160 will compare, or exceed.. for about 800 bucks.. American companys are total rip offs, I will never buy an american instrument again..
You've either never touched a Martin, or you're one of those losers that becomes an elitist just because you found a good deal. Blueridge makes nice guitars, but the br160 isn't on par - certainly not above - a 40's series Martin. It doesn't sound better today, and it won't sound better in 50 years when it's decaying and the Martin's holding sway.
Oh man, Martin truly is the leader in acoustics, Gibson can kiss their butt! The only gripe I have about Martins is that they do too much gloss top, I prefer satin, like the D15.
I was reading about the D-42 the article say's its the watered down version of the D-45 same guitar just inlays on the back of the 45 and about 2,700 dollars difference in price anyone know anything else about the difference?
the only differences are materials used to bind the instrument together, the inlays on the neck are hexagon shape instead of snowflake shape on the 42, and that is literally about it. I own a 42 and considered getting a 45, but the differences are barely noticeable, the 42 is certainly not "watered down" by any means though
I have a CEMartin&Co guitar that is 50 years old it doesnt have a sticker on the inside so i dont know if it is a D-38 or anything like that. But would anyone maybe have an idea of how much the guitar is worth?
k i have a 50 year old martin guitar n i dont know if it is a d-42 or anything like that cause the sticker on the inside is gone how much do you think it is worth??????
did you find out about your guitar yet? I would take it to a guitar shop and have a professional tell you what kind of guitar it is, but if it is say a D28 that is 50 years old, it could be worth 4K or more
Hi! No, actually no polish yet on this guitar. It's the abalone and great condition I beleive makes it shine :-) And for the response, you are absolutley right, it has an AMAZING respons for being a drednought.
Ive got a DC 15e, plugged in sounds mint...not plugged in sounds very poor indeed (unless just had a fresh set of strings) Ive had it refretted once as its a working guitar getting played extensively 3-4 times a week. Clubhead's guitar history, for no particular reason other than Martin rules my world:
1980 -- Gibson B-25 (my Dad's)
1990 -- '58 Epiphone Cortez (also my dad's, where I really began to learn) ...
2007 -- MARTIN D-42!!!! (Major, major, major step up!)
2011 (in April, after '10 tax refund :) MARTIN D-45!!! ...
Forever more....

k i have a 50 year old martin guitar n i dont know if it is a d-42 or anything like that cause the sticker on the inside is gone how much do you think it is worth??????

did you find out about your guitar yet? I would take it to a guitar shop and have a professional tell you what kind of guitar it is, but if it is say a D28 that is 50 years old, it could be worth 4K or more

Sorry, I meant to ask if you polished it before the video.

Hi! No, actually no polish yet on this guitar. It's the abalone and great condition I beleive makes it shine :-) And for the response, you are absolutley right, it has an AMAZING respons for being a drednought.

Incredibly responsive for a dreadnought. Did you just polish it before this very? That gloss is potent!

Hi! This one is "special". It's a handpicked D-42 out of 20-30 D-42's back in 1996. Really responsive for being a dread! :-)
