this scene is one of the highlights of the movie for me...the song ....the connection of two souls...the lateness of the after hours party...i was right there with them...gimme more sake amigo
If I could be anyone else in the world it would be Bill Murray. (Can I have Scarlett Johanssen as my girlfriend?) The movie was perfect. It says those things that can't be said with dialogue. The truth between peope is often lost in translation. Its a private language that only they understand. No one sings better than Bill. Love it

oh I so agree... I was thinking the very same: that I wish it had the full scene of this song... with both of them and with them sitting outside the room when the music plays inside.. Such a beautiful part of a film filled with such beautiful parts!
This movie was simply a foreign Film written, directed and performed by Americans. If it had subtitles and no Bill Murry it would be easier to dismiss. Those that get it have been exposed to more art house style movies and know the difference between a 'film' and a 'movie'. It has as much to do with exposure to this subtler narrative style as it does with someones intellect. Oops, weed rants and YouTube don't mix.
@jamesandrew2000 arthouse schmarthouse, the film reminds me of merry christmas mr lawerence, a japanese director trying western hemi arthouse, it just don't work
WTF anybody body can EXPLAIN to me why people say that to really undrstand this vid its need to be deep in love? I dont get it looooool. I think that its just about feel lonely.
@GabiMontez85 Sure, it has to do with profound loneliness, but for those of us who have ever really been in love when it's been inconvenient, or perhaps poorly timed, understand more so than the average viewer would. That's really what it's about, at least, to me it is. If you don't comprehend it on that level, I'm certainly not going to insult you about it....you either get it or you don't. If you don't, then don't bother trying to. I'm sure you will eventually. :)
There are just many things in this film that I can relate to. The plots as well as the conversations these people have are the ones that I normally have with someone new. Pure brilliance!
Oh, I also meant to say I really love this film and my friends don't get it either... which seems to heighten the empathy everyone (who gets it) has for the characters' sense of alienation, isolation and dislocation
IMO it's fantastic...I've bought it for my collection...I'm never bored to watch it,'cause it has got so many meanings, a smart 1...Not like the average new ones today! ciao
This film conjures up a whole mix of feelings for me - joy, happiness, sadness, nostalgia, anxiety. I'm in an age group somewhere in between the two characters so it's with a bittersweet nostalgia that I recall what Scarjo's character is going through. At the same time i am filled with a kind of dread for what Murray's character's is going through (will I become irrelevant? will anything I did in my life have any lasting impact etc). Thought-provoking film!
The fact that the film is set in Japan basically means that everyone is talking a different language to the two leads. It is actually a metaphor because where we are surrounded by people who although talk our language, we dont connect with them...... They might aswell be talking a different language.......
I feel that is what the film is truly about.; a couple of people connecting and understanding each other when noone else does.
This film is not about a 'momentary, intense flirtation.' Its about two people who have a connection when all others around them have no idea of the person they are ot the thoughts that they are feeling.....
I was talking to some people about this movie and they found the story monotonous. I respect this opinion, but I disagree. For me this film is a momentary, intense flirtation. Nothing more than brief moments of affection. Nowadays it is a gem.
One of my favorite songs, and seeing one of my favorite actors singing this so poorly (on purpose) on film was an awesome surprise! Both Bill Murray and Bryan Ferry are geniuses; it's like peanut butter and chocolate coming together! LOL
I wish someone would put a fuller version of the karaoke scene on here, or at least where both Murray and Johansson sing. I really love it. A lot of people say the film has no plot, but i think it's a brilliant film. It's not about action, it's about a connection, and human relationships.
It is a fantastic film. A lot of people don't appreciate the subtle brilliance that is the portrayal of emotions shown between Scarlett and Bill. I've tried to upload that scene, in HD, but copyright wouldn't allow me
I agree completely ! It is such a beautiful connection that we see here. I've shown this to friends and they give me blank stares... I need new friends.
jcornelius84, that's exactly the same response I get from my associates too. They're all too uptight and need to get with the program. Love them, but they gotta learn to loosen up.
There is an lightness to the original version that Bill Murray leaves out on purpose. He is a lost soul, and by singing this up beat song with such sadness it creates a sense of how disconnected his character is.
You missed the part where, before the song starts, he says, "This is hard," pinches the bridge of his nose, bows his head and picks it back up to re-set himself before singing this "difficult" song. That's the humor of the whole scene.

Surely a poetic film if there ever was one. But I think the poetry comes across just fine -- unless you don't get it...!

@Jannyca beautiful to be able to make a film in which silences say more than words
Look at the girls eyes/stare and you know there is a connection... without words
Wish there were a lot more films like this. A classic!
