wow, ive just ordered every ''MASTERS OF HORROR'' dvd from amazon, judging from these trailers, i think im in for a real treat! where was this shit on halloween? wish i had them for that night! along with insidious, only just seen it and LOVED it.
i still remember watching these, my granny and i would pop some popcorn, fill our drinks with coke and dim the lights out in the livingroom to watch them. good times
yeah, when demons start carving up your back and arms, you might want to just couch surf for a while or, you know, be homeless. it's better than being ripped into pieces.
Ok, it's not what I expected, but it's ok for Lovecraft's "non-readers". But I missed the Great Black Man! This could sound strange, but I imagine Keziah (the Witch) more creepy. This one is even "nice". The inclusion of a female character helps to make the "search for a baby" shorter, but maybe people not familiar with Lovecraft works will not understand why Gilman reaches some conclusions, I mean, according to what he thinks the witchs is trying to "convert" him??? Better than others, anyway.
@partzzzzzzz It's hard to say. They are both very good episodes. But i'd probably perfer this one over Jennifer. It's a very close tie between which one is scarrier though
(con't) dumbing down unto a desecration, that is, of what I consider to be not only HPLs greatest work, but a forgotten masterpiece not simply of the genre but among 20th Century American short stories as a whole.
Having read this spectacularly weird, astonishingly macabre long short-story by HPL some two-dozen times for being transfixed by the rhapsodic language and wild imagery, I often thought about transmuting it somehow or in fact how it would look on the screen. I see now five years after its unfortunate release that this was in screenwritten. I have not seen the entire film, so I wiill not evaluate it, but the trailer convicts it of startling silliness and smacks of a dumbing-down unto affront.
The episode was good but the horrific genius of H.P. Lovecraft cannot be truly captured in a one hour short this needed to be a full length film at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours to really develop both the plot and characters but all in all this adaptiation was good and enjoyable in my opinion now if only more of Lovecraft's works could be make it to the screen assuming a competent director and cast work on it but maybe that is asking to much of a hollywood obsessed with gore and mindless sex scenes
Having watched this episode multiple times, I tried to like it, but honestly it was far too Hollywood for my liking. Changing the gender of Frank to Frances, and the entire nude scene were not only out to lunch but also just ridiculous. Perhaps one day we'll see an honest adaptation of the story which doesn't require sex to be a good story.
Too much emphasis on flesh, and blood, and not nearly enough on the actual intended meaning of the story. HP Lovecraft would not approve.
:| I am not impressed. One of the great aspects of Lovecraft's writing is the vulnerability. You don't know what it is, you don't know what it looks like, you don't know what it is, all you know is that there's something just out of your vision hunting you, chasing you, and all you have is you and your thoughts (and possibly a really shit flashlight). Soaking "Dreams in the Witch House" in blood ruins the suspense Lovecraft tried to build. Sure, there is blood, but this isn't an action film!
probably not one of the best episode of this series but still pretty creepy. couldn't done without the talking rat. eww the baby being in danger especially gets under your skin!
Saw this on the big screen at the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival -- & it was fairly effective. As a cinematic rendering of a tale by HPL, this is his most faithful effort and is fairly true to its written source.
this was a great show, but the only thing that struck me hard was the rat killing the baby. i have a 1 year old son so u could imagin how heart dropping that scene was, but the little rat man is freaky!
scary shit at 0:55 it almost brings me back 2 my childhood wen i use 2 have nightmares at my old apartment about the witch....im gettin chills jus thinkin about...anyway they say wen ur little if u go 2 bed 2 late or ur bad the witch will come and get u in ur dreams or ur not suppose 2 stay up past midnight if ur little coz she will be right besides u the minute u go 2 sleep...in the middle of the night i seen some wierd lookin eyes and felt a cold chill on me it was a witch...good movie 5 stars
This trailer didn't show any of the other surreal parts of his dreams, like when he was taken through different abyssal dimensions, and he saw Yog-Sothoth, and that Polyhedron Creature... or when he traveled to the city of the elder things and accidentally broke off a statue of one of the aliens. I didn't see the black man there either. I hope this movie has them.
What in the hell? Everyone seems to be saying how good this episode was and how much it was like the Lovecraft story? There was barely anything left that made Lovecraft's original story so great. And the battle scene with the witch in the end, was just ridicilous.
It had its good moments and it wasn't a complete waste of time. But would it be for once possible to make a Lovecraft movie which happens in Lovecraftian times and stop modernizing everything!
The episode itself is really good. Great atmosphere true to the Lovecraft story. However, you are right, the guy IS a horrible actor. He almost ruined the entire movie for me.
Really? I thought he did alright, but then again I just came from watching the First episode "Incident On and Off A Mountain Road" which had horrendous acting.
Dagon and The Ressurected are about the only films that come close to even trying to capture the Lovecraft "feel" of his stories. But even they just don't seem to manage it. The Thing and In The Mouth Of Madness (even though they are not based on Lovecraft stories) do better at portraying Lovecraft's themes of the alien under our noses. A lot of the other stuff just descends into black magic hocus pocus which, ironically, Lovecraft detested.
I read this well-written review on Amazon; it said that Gordon (despite a low budget and a tight filming schedule) succeeded in keeping the film as faithful to the original Lovecraft story as he could get. :)
Dagon and Dreams in the witchhouse are actual films that do lovecraft justice, excluding the sex scenes in dagon. Beyond the wall of sleep I can make sense of but couldn't be more off but reaches the atmospheric perspective extremely well. The ressurected "Case of Charles Dexter Ward" is probably the best.
hmm, the trailer doesn't seem that intriguing to me, but if its based on Lovecraft I may have to check it out.
