If you look at one individual riff, it may sound similar to other riffs, but step back and look at the whole song and it may be unique as a whole. This riff, on its own, is generic, I agree. But it still kicks ass.

this style of riffing also totally reminds me of power metal. What's the characteristic of it all is the repeating note, let's call it the pedal note. So they basically fill up the equally divided rhythmical space where the "upper notes" - the ones we mainly notice when listening - aren't playing. It's boring, yeah :)
