you obviously have not been in Thorn Cave.

The mini bosses will 1hit you. Clerics were there as rev-bots, and critbuff slaves, and that's it.

then dont pay. no matter how much sc you're using, you're still going to be 1hit. One of our clerics went gearless when we actually killed Karen, because it truly does not matter.
