Great song,!, great memories, had it burned to my mp3 player 8 hours over the Atlantic ocean on my way to Cairo Egypt several years ago,,,loved it then...love it now,,is timeless!
Actually Prine helped Goodman write "you never even called me by my name" in a hotel room one night. I saw them in an interview talking about. But as far as official credit its Goodman's name on the song. If I remember Prine said he just contributed a line or 2.
@seymourbbest ok u got me..but my point was really just the radio sucks..bad....john prine must cost too much too play....columbia records can collect $0.7 cents a song..where oh boy would charge $.10 cents...then they bust out the graphs and pie charts in the boardroom, and boom i gotta listen to shania twain..:<
@c6e9 but Prine helped, even though he refused credit for it. Prine wrote the lines "You don't have to call me darling, darling, but you never even called me by my name." After Coe did the song and it became popular, Goodman asked Prine if he was sure he didn't want to take co-credit for it. Prine told him he didn't and Goodman gave John a jukebox (an expensive one) just because. (for his contribution to the song)
Song writing credit went to goodman but I've seen goodman himself say in interviews that john prine helped him write "you never even called me by my name". By then prine was already a song writing legend and probably didn't have to have his name on someone elses work for contributing a few lines.
One of my all time favorite songs. Its my theme song when I get drunk and take my beach chair and go sit in the west obey river at hippie jack's music festival. John Prine is a song writing genius.

You can hear John Prine and his friends on radio in BC, Canada...heard this one today...had to hear it again to night...thankx for posting this... :)>
A friend of mine always played Prine in prison. He said it brought more people together (and protected him) they loved Prine, it was as if it transcended cultures and races to bring the fellow inmates together for the appreciation of good music. My friend was well respected and not bothered because of his ability to play Prine.
I LOVE THIS TUNE ...... I am ready with the keyboard part..... anyone want to do this song?.... (basically C, F, G).... the singer has the toughest part.....?
I love the old cyclops tv. I worked on one of those once when I worked in the TV shop. Remember when we had tubes? Lots of tubes, cant hardly find 'em now but when you do they are either junk or expensive. Russia still makes tubes. I have two in my rf amp. 3-500z . 1500 watts. love the glow!
@lwplwp I've heard Goodman and Coe sing it so much I can't remember which one wrote it any longer. I heard/saw Steve Goodman in concert back around 1970 when he came to Purdue. Are you a Cubbie's fan, too?
A good friend of mine was in prison and was playing Prine when other inmates began to encourage him to play more. He became a great 12 string guitarists before he was taken home by pancreatic cancer. Brian Brown was his name , from west central Ind. Lost Dogs was the name of his band.
i suppose the idea might be not harming your nieghbor and the idea of forgiving slight offenses instead of prison [as a culture]. not that i always agree, but i will read the new testament and bhuddist texts to you. it's great sound why worry?
@NotoTruth You obvious have good taste in music if you rank Prine and Cohen in the pantheon of greats. Coe's version of the song is great. But I've never seen any place where he's been credited with writing the song with Prine (although I could be wrong). Prine and Goodman were great buddies and wrote many songs together. This is simply good music! Great music! Again, I admire your taste!
@NotoTruth Guess what, you can't hear John Prine on the radio ANYWHERE! That's the way it oughta be. There's no place in commercialized horseshit for real music. Oh, and Steve Goodman wrote You Never Even Called Me By My Name.
@NotoTruth We are better off this way (although I'm sure John could use some of that Toby Keith cash) for when something gets popular, and some cunt sees where he can "move a lot of units", package it up pretty and market it to the masses.... it turns it into shit.

By the way, nototruth, Steve Goodman (another Chicago native) wrote "you never even call me by my name", not Prine.
