  • Great song,!, great memories, had it burned to my mp3 player 8 hours over the Atlantic ocean on my way to Cairo Egypt several years ago,,,loved it then...love it now,,is timeless!

  • This Cat sets a groove like nobody else except for maybe JJ Cale

  • John is a real cool CAT !!!!!

  • Apparently, 4 people hurt somebody....

  • @VermontHerbs lol

  • "You can fool some of the people part of the time in a rock and roll song". Gotta love it. :D

  • grave was the prophecy, the meek shall inherit the earth, the meek leaders with dirt people.

  • chickens laying eggs. and being born in a forigen land, your own tougne a strager, till you are able, marcelo.

  • just take a look at this video ,john prine ye lar

  • well cigarettes are legal because america hells child, could not ban smoking, so they banned illegal drugs.

  • what if prison was illegal and only men killed each other. then time spent would be well spent. You know im doing time for another mans crime.

  • @TheBlindPig1 and you have access to the internet in prison?

  • Actually Prine helped Goodman write "you never even called me by my name" in a hotel room one night. I saw them in an interview talking about. But as far as official credit its Goodman's name on the song. If I remember Prine said he just contributed a line or 2.

  • @seymourbbest ok u got me..but my point was really just the radio sucks..bad....john prine must cost too much too play....columbia records can collect $0.7 cents a song..where oh boy would charge $.10 cents...then they bust out the graphs and pie charts in the boardroom, and boom i gotta listen to shania twain..:<

  • @NotoTruth maybe john prine is too controversial for radio.

  • awsome

  • now who would say rap was somethin kids invented in the 90's

John, this JUST keeps gettin better!

  • just du

  • Such a crappy 90's video for such a great Prine song.

  • Outstanding Prine tune!!! Great lyrics as usual but the blues spin in incredible! Love it!!!!

  • Omg dude the dude right after 0:36 is my grandfather!

  • Steve Goodman Wrote You never call me by my name

  • Just heard this song today. I'm diggin' it!

  • Live and let live John is helpin' everyone groove on this one.

  • @fngrpkn06 And nothing else fuckin matters !!

  • i love the bass line for this song heard it on lightning 100 nashville

  • I love JP but this is not on my list of favorites by him. Jus my humble opinion

  • I've been a fan of John's from the get! Great man with clever lyrics.

  • Great American song writer.

  • AWESOME!!! Saw John live in Vancouver, BC Totally AWESOME

  • John Prine and Steve Goodman do this song together. (You never even called me by my name)

  • I love the groove of this tune. Pretty out of character for JP, but the lyrics are typically witty.

By the way, nototruth, Steve Goodman (another Chicago native) wrote "you never even call me by my name", not Prine.

  • @c6e9 ..goodman sure did and david allan coe made it famous in the late 70's or early 80's.....I had an album with that tune by him way back then

  • @c6e9 but Prine helped, even though he refused credit for it. Prine wrote the lines "You don't have to call me darling, darling, but you never even called me by my name." After Coe did the song and it became popular, Goodman asked Prine if he was sure he didn't want to take co-credit for it. Prine told him he didn't and Goodman gave John a jukebox (an expensive one) just because. (for his contribution to the song)

  • billy bob thorton is a poser through and through

  • This music sounds like the begining of the movie "Sling blade". I wonder if Billy Bob Thornton got it from John Prine. Does anybody know for sure?

  • Song writing credit went to goodman but I've seen goodman himself say in interviews that john prine helped him write "you never even called me by my name". By then prine was already a song writing legend and probably didn't have to have his name on someone elses work for contributing a few lines.

  • This has been my mobile ring tone for the last 5 years! (it would have been 15 years, but I didn't have an MP3 compatible phone until 2005.....)

  • who really cares about prisoners wrongfully incarcerated?

  • 115 people are 'aint hurtin nobody

    2 people are :P

  • the beach was filmed @ CuttyHunk!!!!!!!

  • too much B.S. not enuff of this

  • One of my all time favorite songs. Its my theme song when I get drunk and take my beach chair and go sit in the west obey river at hippie jack's music festival. John Prine is a song writing genius.

  • every time I hear him, he sounds even BETTER?? whats not to like.. and a smokin band with great harmonies! WHOA..go easy on us John, we are mere mortals!

  • GOD I LOVE JOHN PRINE...the best story teller...have a hard time deciding what is my favorite...I'm thinking though that this is it...

  • "At the beach in Indiana-I was 9 years old

Hear Little Richard singin' "Tutti Frutti" from the top of a telephone pole

I wasn't hurtin' nobody..." I was in NJ hearin Ricky Nelson by the pool and listened to Little Richard with muy older bro Christmas Eve while my parents prepared a surprise gift-the best gift was those song moments

  • Celebrating 7000 Tweets w/John Prine Video I was an extra in!

2:53 My Hand, 2:56, 2:58, 3:00, 3:31 w/Hat On, 4:04 Me sticking my tongue out, 4:28 Me w/Hat on the right. I don't know who the other ethnic lady was, but the other 2 ladies were friends of mine I invited to the video shoot!

  • there was a bi!*# in indy! keep chuckin

  • I havent heard this since I was in high school, John Prine Rules!!!!

  • john prine

  • I aint hurting nobody

  • My little sister was the blond girl at 2:18 into the video,at 2:53, at 3:05,at 3:33 and at 4:05. I wouldn't have recognized her were it not for the tattoo.

  • You can hear John Prine and his friends on radio in BC, Canada...heard this one today...had to hear it again to night...thankx for posting this... :)>

  • You can hear stuff like this on commercial radio. Memphis style !! Radiopig.com

  • i've been listing to john prine since i was 8 years old and my dad still has all of his records and cds. john prine is the best!

  • how could anyone NOT love JP? :-D a TRUTH singer...by far one of the BEST of all time!!

  • A friend of mine always played Prine in prison. He said it brought more people together (and protected him) they loved Prine, it was as if it transcended cultures and races to bring the fellow inmates together for the appreciation of good music. My friend was well respected and not bothered because of his ability to play Prine.

  • Prine is fine anytime!

  • I LOVE THIS TUNE ...... I am ready with the keyboard part..... anyone want to do this song?.... (basically C, F, G).... the singer has the toughest part.....?

  • This is the greatest song. Been singin it for years.

    Love John Prine.

  • John Prine is a legend ... to be mentioned in the same breath with Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.

  • I love the old cyclops tv. I worked on one of those once when I worked in the TV shop. Remember when we had tubes? Lots of tubes, cant hardly find 'em now but when you do they are either junk or expensive. Russia still makes tubes. I have two in my rf amp. 3-500z . 1500 watts. love the glow!

  • I remember going to Indiana beach back in 1962 and listening to music at the beach from a telephone pole loud speaker.

  • My mom used to play this album all the time when I was a kid, and this was my first ever "favorite song."

Now I'm 20 and listen to John of my own accord. This song still makes me feel as "cool" as it did back then.

  • "you never even call me by my name" was written by David Alan Coe.

  • @fred1369 Not it was actually written by John Prine and Steve Goodman.....Although Prine is not credited.

  • @lwplwp I've heard Goodman and Coe sing it so much I can't remember which one wrote it any longer. I heard/saw Steve Goodman in concert back around 1970 when he came to Purdue. Are you a Cubbie's fan, too?

  • @fred1369 - Sorry. It was written by Steve Goodman. David Alan Coe even acknowledges that his friend Steve Goodman wrote the "perfect country song."

  • I was an extra in this video, and they will be playing at 'Bonaroo' this year, so I will be there too!

  • A good friend of mine was in prison and was playing Prine when other inmates began to encourage him to play more. He became a great 12 string guitarists before he was taken home by pancreatic cancer. Brian Brown was his name , from west central Ind. Lost Dogs was the name of his band.

  • @millzee RIP Brian....sometimes people forget that people in prison are human and have feelings also . Prine, Cash , etc. ....never forgot.

  • Prine knows the rhythm of prose.

  • This Postman delivers all the time and he can ring your bell twice!

  • i suppose the idea might be not harming your nieghbor and the idea of forgiving slight offenses instead of prison [as a culture]. not that i always agree, but i will read the new testament and bhuddist texts to you. it's great sound why worry?

  • perfectly crafted popular hit songs..and i cant hear jp on the radio in columbus ohio...but i can hear alot of toby keath:<

i mean the dude wrote you never call me by my name...wtf

  • @NotoTruth - The late great Steve Goodman wrote "you never call me by my name." Steve was a good friend of John Prine. We miss him.

  • @lennycohenfan they both wrote it...D.A.C.gives no props...you seem pretty cool though...J.P. and Len Cohen are my 2 fav songwriters..

  • @NotoTruth You obvious have good taste in music if you rank Prine and Cohen in the pantheon of greats. Coe's version of the song is great. But I've never seen any place where he's been credited with writing the song with Prine (although I could be wrong). Prine and Goodman were great buddies and wrote many songs together. This is simply good music! Great music! Again, I admire your taste!

  • @NotoTruth Guess what, you can't hear John Prine on the radio ANYWHERE! That's the way it oughta be. There's no place in commercialized horseshit for real music. Oh, and Steve Goodman wrote You Never Even Called Me By My Name.

  • @NotoTruth I happen to love toby keith. :P

  • @NotoTruth Steve Goodman wrote "you never even call me by my name"

  • @57panrider so did john prine

  • @NotoTruth We are better off this way (although I'm sure John could use some of that Toby Keith cash) for when something gets popular, and some cunt sees where he can "move a lot of units", package it up pretty and market it to the masses.... it turns it into shit.

  • @NotoTruth Steve goodman wrote you never call me by my name

  • @beckerhead17 John Prine and Steve G. Along with the help of DAC

  • 6,700,033 lights on are the number of incarcerated people in the land of the "free".

  • Super smooth...flows like melted ice cream down the thoat. Love the reference to roosters laying chickens and chickens laying eggs! Nice. I Aint Hutin Nobody either.

  • A favorite song of mine by John Prine

  • I cant believe how good of a songwriter he is. The lyrics take thought and have a deeper meaning....not. this song has some of the most nonsense lyrics i have ever heard. it was definatley worth the laugh though.

  • @rj2long rj you must be joking. you think Prine writes nonsense?? c'mon you must not know his music. he is an American icon. a legend. one of the greatest singer-songwriters in history. this is a heavier song than you can grasp. you are the guy he sings about in this song. listen to Lake Marie, Souvenirs, Bruised Orange, or That's the Way the World Goes 'Round. btw, wish Prine was my mailman in Chicago. he's a great guy. can't believed he delivered mail so long, as talented as he is.

  • He sings about me? which one am I, the girl shucking the corn, or one of the 6,700,033 lights on? Your right about me not listening to his other music, but please enlighten me on the deep meaning of this song. I'd be thrilled to know.

  • First time hearing this Video and the feel reminds me of a mellow Tom Waits.

Such a great song !!!! and almost a lou reed feel.

o man I love songs like this one here !!!!!

you know its a great song when It feels like you heard it before !!!!

    cheers = )

  • reminds of gerdie this song..............

  • thanx this is my favrite song

  • I am an extra in this video!

  • I am so glad someone finally uploaded this. I've been trying to find it for about 15 years.

  • Reminds me of jj cale good stuff

  • Loved this song when I first heard it almost 15 years ago....still love it!

  • John Prine has some of the best lyrics...this song is a gem.

  • Kevindad123 on you tube is way better doing this song IMHO

  • I have listened to Rock-N-Pop since the 60's & 70's. I have was a huge Country Fan in the 80's till late 90's, but never discovered John Prine until just last year(2008). I have to get all of his stuff, more money to spend! LOL!!! Some his expressions and lyric so catchy and original. The "Bruised Orange" video is awesome as well!!!

  • Just got to say that I'm right there with Vengeance509 on that one. It was a government lawyer in London in 2003, rather Californian hippy chicks in my case, but hey the upshot was the same!

  • My Lord H C (with all reverence).

Two hippy-chicks turned me onto this Maestro in Sonoma, CA, in 1995, and... quite frankly, ever since, this man made me believe in God.

There must be a God, because Nothing Else would explain someOne who'd be so good to give this Genius to the Earth.

    (BTW: Thnx Lisa & Janice)

And Christian fundies...don't dare bitch on my statement about John Prine, you dogs.

  • I've heard John play this many times but never saw the video...too cool!

  • Thank you so much! I have been looking for this song..., went to nashville, none of the musicians who freelance for tips could play it... what a shame that was.

  • I've been looking for this video. They use to play it on CMT all the time about 10 years ago. I love this song. I aint a hurtin nobody. Awesome. 5 stars and more if it was possible.
