  • hey, are you in the talk on the wild side program? You sound like stephanie!

  • But if the penguins got out, you could keep them as pets!

    ...

...oh wait; there are laws against that. ._.,

  • to cute

  • ive been there

  • ahhhhhh theyre cute

  • way cute. But i can see why they're called jackass penguins

  • I think it's because they keep braying like donkeys (jackasses). But I think their name was recently changed to "African Penguin".

  • They are also called Magellatic Penguins.

  • Oh. Shows what I know. xD

  • no dude, magellanics and african-black-footed penguins are 2 different types

  • penguins r so awsome

  • Jackass Penguin babies are adorable. But damnation they're noisy! >.<

  • Yup I knew that were JackAss Penguins. I would like to babysit penguins. I love penguins and I want to work as a penguin bioligist or something like that.

I remember in a book an explorer said, "They are black and White Birds who can not fly but swim, and they bray like asses(donkeys)".

  • Omg... That is too cute... I want to be able to babysit penguins!

  • I'm envious. You get to be with baby penguins. T-T

  • LOL Jack ass penguins. i agree with u brigadiergenerallbui

  • SOO CUTE!

  • lol one of them sounds like it is either having an asthma attack, trying to scream loudly but can't or is coughing badly. baby penguins= very cute :-)

  • XDD lol. Well they are magellatic penguins, who are also called jackass penguins (because they sound like donkeys)

  • Did those penguin babies imprint on humans? If so, how will they cope with that when they are released in the wild?

And why no Emperor Penguins there?

  • The purpose of use babysitting them is to have them imprint on humans. They are zoo raised and won't be released into the wild, but instead sent to other zoos with breeding programs. This is not a program because megellatic penguins aren't endangered.

There are no emperor penguins because it's expensive/don't have the facilities to support freezing cold temperatures. Magellatics are warm water penguins, thus are fine with SF weather

  • Still, I remember reading that the smaller the penguin, the hotter the temperatures it can tolerate, and these seem rather similar in size to the Adelie Penguins (which spend a good amount of time on Antarctica) so global warming could pose a problem for these ones (it certain poses a problem for Emperors!).

The reason for imprinting on humans is so they can be sexually aroused by them and thus able to contribute to the process of artificial insemination, right?

  • Actually the human imprinting is to make the penguins more easily handled during feeding and medical checkups and everything else I think. At the SF Zoo the penguins are hand feed and checked and recorded on how much they eat and what supplements they need. It would be very difficult to feed them like this if they are scared of the zookeepers.

  • As for breeding, i know none, but I believe they breed naturally and are not pressured to breed neither. There are breeding pairs who stay with each other their whole lives and we also have singles too.
