My uncle recently tried this and was able to help his diabetes, and he was also paid for his time. Brain surgery is not always the best option for seizures as they may reappear. However, it seems to me that these profits also fund medical research that could one day bring about a cure for many diseases. A health care system that generates large income is not the problem. The problem is what Hyman mentions in the beginning. Encourage healthy living and a functional health care system will follow.
Simple. Supply and Demand. The AAMC accredits a controlled number of schools to teach medicine. Those 'accredited' 142 M schools 'control' the number of accepted applicants. Why? Easily 10% of Americans are smart enough and disciplined enough to complete Medical school.
Commoditize medical education. This will lower education costs. Decrease control (admittance). This will increase supply. More doctors = lower demand = lower salaries = lower costs.
Great solution. Make the training 18 months instead of 4 yr med school, 3-8 yrs of additional training and then lower the wages. See how many you'll get to line up with your "lowered appropriate wages" and you line up for treatment.
Obviously I would GLADLY pay for a skilled physician/surgeon with years of experience and knowledge to make those treatment decisions that would impact my life.

Having traveled extensively to two "socialized medicine" countries, Mexico and Canada, I can honestly say that both systems are corrupt and inefficient. The freedom to prescribe myself medicine. The freedom to utilize whatever diagnostic equipment necessary. I don't need a communist government, a socialist government, the FDA, or the DEA deciding what is best for me.
Total freedom in this area I would not be against. As long as I am able to see a trained physician. I would leave self diagnosis, medication and self surgery to whose who think they can do that those.
In you pick your doctor. If you doctor tells you that you need your gallbladder removed.. then he calls the hospital to find the earliest date for surgery .. he does not have to call the insurance company ... he has the power to approve your surgery ..
America has the most advanced medical technology in the world. You hear of all these strange diseases that foreigners get and the doctors from those countries need help from an American doctor. People aren't suffering in this country and just like MrMC said, there is more suffering in the world from diseases than some guy's medical bills.
I agree that people should take responsibility for their own diet. Think about it, it may be all well for those weak already to have a universal health care system, but the children of the next generations will be spoiled with the idea that everything is simply provided for. Dr. H. makes a good point. We do all need to take personal responsibility for the things we do each day that make us ill over time. I do think we need Universal care but with reasonable co-pays. Co-pays should be slightly higher for people who are clinically obese, a smoker or if you had a drug or alcohol related illness. This gives incentive to quit your unhealthy habits. However there should be free programs to help people lose weight or quit their additions.

Where does the money go? Well, British doctors are the second-highest paid in Europe! Money also goes to administrators, who have a vested interest in the system. The answer is to offer tax incentives to healthy people. This could be accomplished by having doctors fill out forms at a physical, and if people check out as having a healthy weight, etc. then they receive a tax deduction.

What do you think about the Healthy paying for the Health system, while the sick pay nothing? Another idea I have is to eliminate insurance type companies and allow Doctors to directly recieve payments from an Association of Peer accretided and hired Groups that pay based on that Medical groups Association ideals/needs rather than procedures performed. The Group would then have to pay another association/Dr. when a third party deems that a patient should receive treatment at a special facility.

It's that I'm so desperate, frustrated, angry and helpless that I will try anything, including Brain surgery to stop and cure my seizures. Trust me, I will try anything to stop my seizures. Have you contacted any research labs to see if there are experimental drugs that are being tested on human patients or if one is nearing that level. My uncle recently tried this and was able to help his diabetes, and he was also paid for his time. Brain surgery is not always the best option for seizures as they may reappear. Good luck with this unfortunate state of events that has plagued you for the last ten years.

However, it seems to me that these profits also fund medical research that could one day bring about a cure for many diseases. A health care system that generates large income is not the problem. Simple. Supply and Demand. The AAMC accredits a controlled number of schools to teach medicine. Those 'accredited' 142 M schools 'control' the number of accepted applicants. Why? Easily 10% of Americans are smart enough and disciplined enough to complete Medical school.
Commoditize medical education. This will lower education costs. Decrease control (admittance). This will increase supply. More doctors = lower demand = lower salaries = lower costs.

I agree, health is not like going to a retail store and looking at the bargain bins or items on sale. I'm quite sick of some people saying these doctors are making too much money, so it's like they went to Med school all those years and spent all that money for the education so they can get a crappy wage. I guess then we should all lower our wages just to be fair. Yes it's nice for someone to do things for free but don't EXPECT it as a requirement, not out of medicine anyway.

Universal Healthcare doesn't mean the doctors would be doing it for free. Single Tax payer means that you pay into the system that will pay the doctors. If everyone had coverage, doctors or hospitals wouldn't have to foot the bill when someone can't pay.

This is a fantastic idea. Put all medical information on the internet. Make medical diagnostic equipment available for use (with some cost recovery fee) and allow me to prescribe myself medicine.
I'll go to some sunny and fun destination where service is good and quality is high, such as say... Singapore for more serious stuff and operations.
Then all we need is ER-only insurance.

Having traveled extensively to two "socialized medicine" countries, Mexico and Canada, I can honestly say that both systems are corrupt and inefficient. All people do in both countries is bitch about how bad the system is and how money is the true equalizer because it provides access to private doctors.

The Canadian system is most definitely NOT corrupt nor inefficient and is most definitely far better VALUE than either the US or Mexican Systems.
That said, my preference is to go to Costa Rica for visits to the dentist and doctor. And I have good health insurance.

The canadian mediocal system is notorious for its inefficiency and poor quality. Socialized medicine is a great idea, but the Canadian version is pretty pathetic. Everyone is already paying taxes, it would benefit everyone if the taxes are used to provide Universal Healthcare. In the case of the fire department I'd have to agree with you. The only thing I'm trying to say, and which I said over and over again, is that sure it's nice to have these things but more convenience is not what we need. For those in serious pain and need surgery there are always those fundraisers and the people willing fundraise that will help them. I'm not saying Government shouldn't do anything but they should not be our primary provider of health.

I agree that people should take responsibility for their own diet. Think about it, it may be all well for those weak already to have a universal health care system, but the children of the next generations will be spoiled with the idea that everything is simply provided for. If it's so important then let's work more on Charity, that is the true and most humane way of helping others in need. If the government is not taking care of it now what makes you think it ever will?

Dr. H. makes a good point. We do all need to take personal responsibility for the things we do each day that make us ill over time. I do think we need Universal care but with reasonable co-pays. Co-pays should be slightly higher for people who are clinically obese, a smoker or if you had a drug or alcohol related illness. This gives incentive to quit your unhealthy habits. However there should be free programs to help people lose weight or quit their additions.

Interesting, you might benefit from a better outline. You need a notebook in order to get all the points that you mention in your speech. A series with special points would have been better recieved and remembered. It's important to fix our health care system obviously.
