i hope you havent had that tracer too long, they do have an expiration date. i reload my own shells, and one of my favorites are my copper tube jacketed slugs. if made properly (still working on hardening/ softening the copper) it will peel away, making a sepperate viscous wound tract. i make one, that is a 1 1/2 oz sever cavity hollow point. when i get a camera and the materials to make my ballistic gel targets ill post them
@Ki113r210 Oh wow I didnt know they expire? That gives me a good reason to go shoot them. I got them a year ago from a friend and I dont know how long he had them?
@mixflip yeah, it is chemicals after all. it may vary for yours, but iv seen boxes of them in the local shop, they got a big orange sticker on them saying they expire in such and such month and year. its not like its a short expiration date. i think its generally a couple years, and they shoot fine they just wont light up correctly or as much as far as i know.
I have a remington 870 with a standard 18 inch smoothbore barrel. Could you possibly give me a specific list of what types of rounds I can fire from that. All these different Ammo types are a bit confusing.
@Otaku155 Easy answer...a smooth bore 12 gauge can shoot anything 12 gauge regardless of the projectile. Some projectiles may not perform well like sabots since they are designed for rifled shotgun barrels but you can still shoot them if you want to. Its the choked barrels that you have to be careful off because they are smaller at the muzzle. Also you have to read the chambering. You gun probably can only take up to 3 inch shells? It will say on the barrel. Some go up to 3 1/2 shells?
@saik0pod I actually would use a rifle hollow point slug for home defense but its just not my first choice unless I lived in bear country that is. I simply prefer the versatility of multiple projectile spreading out over a 4" to 8" pattern depending on the distance of course. More holes to bleed out of and more chances of getting a hit even if my aim isnt perfect. My aim may be off a little do to being groggy or scared or pumped full of adrenaline?slugs are great man stoppers for sure
Consider #4 buck shot for many home defense situations. 27 pellets in standard 2.75" loads, each a little bigger than .22, will disperse somewhat more than 00 and penetrate walls, etc. less but won't be stopped by heavy clothing. Even with cyl bore choke 00 will only open up to a few inches at room-length ranges.
@lswasserm1 Very true. I actually need to buy some #4 buckshot. I like the mindset of #4 with its lighter weight 22 sized pellets and indoor shooting.
I been looking for where you got your ammo. I found the firequest site.. what would you recommend? or should i just wait and go to a gun show and buy them?
@Shittalker311 I dont buy online so I really cant help in that dept. Sorry. We have gun show every month here in Las Vegas so I guess Im lucky? Sorry.
@TrueGuaranteedIrish True it might be. But birdshot loses velocity very quickly due to its tiny mass. It also doesnt penetrate through denim and underclothing or a leather jacket enough to stop a threat quickly without a head shot or multiple COM hits. Unfortunately I dont have control at what distance a threat will be or what they will be wearing? So to be safe 00 buck will do for now as far a a one shot stopper. Yes its overkill bit I am ok with it for now.
@mixflip Hmmm, good points there :-). Better to be safe(r) than sorry I guess. Great vid btw. It's a shame that anything white a pellet size over .36" is illegal in Ireland. I would love to send a few slugs down range.
i use Winchester PDX12 home defense rounds, 3 #00bk behind 1oz hollow-point rifled slug. i have one in my pump action and the next three rounds in the tube are 3" high velocity BB rounds.
@summerfest1mike my uncle shot a charging rabid coyote at about 10 yards with bird shot when he was phesant hunting about 15 years ago. Not a joke they tested it and it was rabid, he waited to shoot it untill it came in close.
@summerfest1mike From personal experience, carry BB shot and Buckshot. I have found BB shot to be the best, good pattern for my 870, and more area coverage. effective range with a full choke is round 40 yds, 50 yd shots can be made, but it is a big stretch. Buckshot i have not used as much, and with my setup the patttern is not the best. Also, make sure if your using a full choke that it is rated for steel shot/magnum loads... I made the mistake of not checking that... lol
@joshuasmithd21 I think so. It is meant to stop a threat so I guess it would have alot of gunpowder? I am assuming that since it has very little mass that it cant transfer enough deadly force to a person but it can transfer stinging focused pin point pain!!! lol.
Just a preference ,but #1 buckshot penetrates just as much as 00 buck and has 16 pellets at .30 caliber compared to 8 or 9 with 00 at .33 caliber..Ballistic tests have proven equal penetration at 12 inches and 30 % more damage with #1 buck..more projectiles as well for better chance at hitting a target..could be hard to find at times, but keep some standard #1 buckshot on hand for home defense..goodluck.
@leviet2010 Its usually called a "BOLO" round. I got it from the gun show but you can find them on the internet if you do a search for BOLO shotgun ammo. 2 slugs connected with piano wire is just wicked!!!!
@FlyingPancreas I dont think so since my shotguns can shoot various lengths of shells such as 2 3/4" and 3" magnum. Plus there is a wad that separates the projectile from the brass. Also I dont think a shotgun shell can even get set back because none of the projectile actually touches the chamber when its in full battery. Its encased in 100% plastic.
I choose birdshot, here's why.
A.) It can be stockpiled by the masses. I reccommend federal bulk (same price as winchester universal, yet cycles in semi auto's reliably)
B.) Very low recoil, making for a quicker follow up shot.
C.) Limited penetrating power (less chance of it going through a wall)
D.) 20 dollars (plus tax) for 100 at your local walmart, which I know the firearm community loves.
Other rounds have their place (and i store them accordingly), but 8 shot is underrated.
