I can picture the look on Simon Cowells face if Barbra was an unknown appearing on Idol today with this song. He would have stopped the show to personally sign her to a contract before she had a chance to leave the building.
This, of course, instantly became the standard for this song. She did that so many many times over the years and decades, just by fulfilling her own vision. Record companies tried to float at least a dozen Barbra spinoffs and none of it worked. On their first LP covers, Lana Cantrell and Marilyn Michaels were even made to look like Streisand. Girl singers all over the place were adopting Streisand mannerisms. All to little avail.
Thank you so much for posting this. I remember watching it as a kid in Philadelphia, thinking what a tremendous talent she had. These were the exciting early years of her career, before she became the politically controversial character we know today.
