Midshipmen wouldn't have received punishment such as being strung up in the rigging. Confinement to quarters, extra watches or fines were the usual charges for officers

Actually, Middies do get strung up in the riggings, they're junior enough to get that, they don't get flogged though. I think you're thinking of lieutenants. Cheers, I could be mistaken but I think not. I'll look it up later

I guess it really depended on the stature of the Midshipman in question. Often, young sons of prominent members of high society would be posted as midshipman on board capital ships, and a Captain would certainly not risk using harsh punishment on those particular midshipman lest they lose any potential political favour. In someone like Hornblower's case, the son of doctor, all was fair game I suppose, haha.

Not for Midshipman in that era. Their punishment could include "kissing the Gunner's Daughter." - Basically being cained (lashes) across the butt while bent over a cannon. Midshipmen in that day had very harsh treatment. They were treated WAY worst than the Lietenants.

well simpson is what you call in english terms a scum, a putured scum. And back then they were many of em in the british navy during the 18th & 19th centuries. It's samething in the army you'll always come across dogs like that. Sometimes it might be a an nco or an officer that's being a complete arsehole.
