To think -- a week ago today, I had never heard of Janet Klein. Now I am loving her video performances, especially this one, and she's become a household name.
I'm from Hawai`i and am part Hawaiian and I gotta say against all my better judgement I really do like this. This reminds me of Hawai`i's golden era and I'm glad that some people want to keep this kind of music alive. Way better than the over processed reggae hybrid that Hawai`i music has become.
Knowing Janet, this video was done as it would have been at the time the song was written, which is to say that the entire performance is pantomimed with pre-recorded studio music matched in later. So in that sense everyone is "faking it", but that's actually entirely correct.
Che gentile! You love this video but I don't, in fact I have seen others from Janet Klein and I have to admit she has a charme. But not too much for me. Maybe too much a cartoon, and not too much hula? Ciao
Well, O.K., that was a gracious reply, so maybe you're not just a moronic troll. I'll apologize for becoming overheated in my response. Still, I think you owe her an apology for calling her "an ugly Betty Boop."
To me, all what recreates the past in a ridiculous and almost parodistic way looks ugly. In this video she makes me nervous. The one where she teaches a song with the ukulele is more lovely. In fact, at the time of my first comment, I thought it was an original from the time of Betty Boop, which I dislike so much. But there is art in what she does, in that Yiddish way, which was never my favourite. Apologizes anyway to this old style hula lady. Bye
Nice to have this here-- it always gets hung up repeatedly when I try to watch it on janetklein.com-- now maybe I can learn all the voids-- I mean, words!

How about "Hula Town?"
The guitar player looks like he's waiting for the buffet to begin.

What a disgrace if I may say so myself... Nothing is even hawai'ian about this, so why sing about it. That hula dancer is not even doing anything...
