I saw this production several times. GREAT cast except hat Laurence Guittard was way too old to play Curly but sang wonderfully. . Andreas's review in The New York Times is one of the finest reviews I have ever read for a performer. Martin Vidnovic, Christine Ebersole and Harry Groener were perfection. The show only lacked production values. It look like a modest road company.
Laurence Guittard had the best voice in the cast. No one has sung Curly better. I like that Laurey is a brunette in this production. I saw it three times, all the leads, including the marvelous Harry Groener were working as an ensemble and none of them stole the show.
I never knew that Burton was often booed on stage for drinking--how sad--but in that show and in the movie Amadeus, Christine Ebersole's soprano is incredible.
As far as Christine Andreas, just how short IS she? She just looks average to me. She was incredible in the Broadway Revival of My Fair Lady, and to this day is considered one of the best Broadway performers of all time; she is still singing to sold out crows. I absolutely LUV Laurence Guittard & I doubt any younger actor can outshine!
On Broadway, an actress can be older as long as she looks and acts young for the role. Older actresses have more experience, exceptionally trained singing voices, and are more experienced in acting.
Christine Ebersole was indeed Guinevere in Camelot with Richard Burton, and they both appeared on the Phil Donahue show years ago (don't know it it's here on utube or not)--she has an exquisite singing voice. She also played in the movie Amadeus as the diva soprano and was magnificent.; rent it!
@CoExGal I just checked up on it, and everything I can find says she was dubbed by Suzanne Murphy. This makes sense, as Neville Marinner used classical/opera singers in all the other segments, too. Being able to sing Guinevere and being able to sing Constanze are two very different things.
@CoExGal For her comic chops, maybe? I don't know. But they had actors stand in for all the singers in the film -- those aren't Sam Ramey, Felicity Lott, and Richard Stillwell in the Figaro and Don Giovanni clips.
@TheTieDiePrincess They changed the reference for this production and Christine Andreas's performance was so perfect that The New York Times said that future Laurie's should be brunettes for the sexuality she added to the role.
I saw this revival on a elementary school trip and remember well Ebersole as Ado Annie as I then saw her soon after as Guinivere in 'Camelot' the last time, if I recall, Burton did it and was often boo'ed off the stage, he was (he drank a great deal we were told). Anyway, Ebersole totally stole the show from this Laurie, who I think was Christine Andreas, maybe? Was a big deal, then as this Laurie was 1st brunette Laurie. Ebersole, is a source of energy not to be overtaken and WAS the show.
@sarmadasco You are WILDLY incorrect and given that you were, as you say, a CHILD at the time let me assure you that NO one commanded that stage more than Andreas who got RAVES and a Tony nomination and was literally canonized by The New York Times [one of the single best reviews I have ever read]. Ebersole was divine but she did not steal the show as the entire cast was sublime except for Laurence Guittard whose only fault was that he was a bit too old and a tad too wooden.
@pudgeuncle As young as I was.....I cannot help think that it is a matter of opinion. Many people get nominated for Tony's, who don't necessarily deserve it (ie....K. Zeta Jones..this year). As you repuncjuated, I was a kid, but now, 31 yrs later, it is Ebersole I remember, not Andreas. I am sorry we don't agree, but I do not think telling me that my opinions are "WILDLY incorrect" is going to help make a point. Indeed, inferring that I am not being honest w/ the "as you say", not nice at all.
Laurey is too small and personally i think ado annie is a bit old. the jokes and comments about her "rounding up a little" sound better with a younger actress.
This is awesome! where in the world did you find it?

Ebersole is a fine singer but her voice isn't right for purely classical singing, especially Mozart. That's why she was dubbed.

Whats that stupid ringing noise in the back round!?!?!

Christine Ebersole is the perfect Ado Annie. I had no idea she had done it.

i do not like her singing. its lame and sticotoed.... and she keeps singing it off key and naaasty, P:

@sarahsmartypants I believe you mean staccato
nbrophy72885 10 months ago
@sarahsmartypants No, she's singing the song as written. The flat tone and belting is intentional. Not sure what "sticotoed" means.

@CoExGal She isn't terribly short. You have to remember, Christine is 5ft 10 and is standing right next to her.

@CoExGal I always assumed Ebersole was dubbed in Amadeus. Are you sure she did her own singing?

@90lysander
I don't know why she should be dubbed in Amadeus, if she sang the lead in Camelot with Richard Burton? . Where did you hear that?

Wow--thanks for checking. So then, why would they even use her in Amadeus, only to dub her voice? I don't get it.
