I wouldn't call this *racist* propaganda. The setup for this film is that the viewer is a typical American who thinks a Japanese is this comical, inferior, stupid buck-toothed thing. The film then sets out to convince this racist viewer that he is wrong, that the enemy is indeed dangerous, hard-working, capable, and highly educated. Indeed, if you actually bought into the film's message, you would presumably have gone and bought into some war bonds (the point of making this film).
I'm glad some people acknowledge the political climate of the time this film came out. Sure its propaganda and looking at it today gives a distateful air to it, but this was for a good cause against an oppressive country at the time.
Today we fault (and rightfully) the people of Germany for looking the other way or participating in the persecution of Jews, ignoring the smell of bodies coming from nearby death camps, etc. But we forget (or are ignorant of) the Japanese racism against China, Korea and the Pacific countries, the fact that a race between two soldiers beheading civilians in China was reported like a sports event, and yes. The value on fighting to the last living soul in Japan. But hurf durf America sux lol.
Actually, the world isn't kicking Germany. That's because Germans admitted their wrongdoings early. The current govt does a lot by itself (without outside pressure). In fact, being a neo Nazi, displaying Nazi flag, etc. are all crimes.
In Japan, the government has not apologized (except for very vaguely specified actions), not admitted to facts many Japanese historians consider true, and prominent Japanese officials can say in interviews that China should be glad Japan invaded.
Speaking as a liberal, I think people really need to get a better understanding of Japanese war crimes and propaganda during the WWII era. This is not to justify the atomic bombings, but Imperialist Japan made Nazi Germany look nice by comparison in a LOT of ways. Also, after the war, there was Japanese propaganda apologizing to the emperor on behalf of the people for shaming him by surrendering. This film isn't as inaccurate as our safe 2000s vantage point makes us want to think it is.
The atom bomb, like it or not, was a better alternative to Operation Olympic, the proposed conventional invasion of Japan, which would involve at least 5,000,000 Japanese casualties, and probably several hundred thousand US servicemen. Names like Buick and Ford, would occupy your mind more than Utah and Omaha, when thinking of some glorious moment in US WWII military campaigning. Anyway, the Nazis and Japan thought the USA would sue for peace, due to stalemate, by the Fall of 1946.
haha well it did GET one thing very wrong, we produced more submachine guns than these guys could distribute simple bolt action rifles in fact even besides that we had the greatest engineering technology and the entire country was helping the war effort
@piip4 I was actually quite serious when I made that comment. But it's interesting to see how an incorrectly perceived observation can turn such an enlightened person into a patronizing idiot.
Have a good day sir and don't bother replying because I don't participate in idiotic Youtube-related arrguments.
Excuse me? I wrote what I did because I didn't want to appear arrogant, like "thanks" would have. It was obviously misunderstood into something worse. I can see how that is possible, but it wasn't meant to be patronizing or mean in any way.
Some of the comments so far indicate the need for a reality check:
This was produced by the US government during World War II. The narrator is obviously faking a Japanese accent. The script is intended to provoke Americans to work and fight harder to win the war. Notice how it insults Americans with its "You Americans are weak" messages?
And while the racism is "hilarious" now, it most certainly was not during the war.
All of the things the narrator says about America is true....
about the food...our starving bellies...
and about how we give up trivial things and call them sacrifices....
and towards the end...where he says "look at the score." It really is a good satire of wars or america in general....not just racist propaganda...but maybe my perceptions are screwed up.
Was released during the worst fighting of the Pacific. Would have been more credible visually by using an Asian actor. Was narrative racist? Ask a resident of Nanking or a Filipino who witnessed a neighbor get beheaded because he didn't bow to an officer.
Anybody who ever bought into this as legitimate was about as stupid as anyone could ever be. What a riot, this is like a laugh a minute! The fact that this was actuall released by an official US propaganda outlet is probably the most hilarious part of all.
Well to be fair, this was likely planned to prepare the soldiers and public for Operation Downfall. It does have less of a split personality than Capra's _Know your Enemy-Japan_ does.

Well, I guess the view on the preciseness of a human life in Japan was a bit low, yet glorified.
I don't know where do they come up with those stuff.
