Growing up in the 80's, Optimus Prime was my first hero. I've always believed in him and what he stands for: respect, freedom, justice, and compassion. He's been a role model for a lot of people who watched the show during the most impressionable years of our lives. I'm proud to say that I'm still a fan after all these years.

@Celdrach Hell, Optimus is still a hero. He's probably one of the most beloved and well known icons of the 80's, and he's still relevant today. Just look at the movies. Now even wider audiences can experience how amazing and inspirational he is.

Honestly, his speech at the end of the first movie made me tear up when I first heard it. After that speech I was looking forward to a sequel, because it was obvious one would.

I'm usually a Decepticon fan too...Optimus is just that amazing.

The thing that made Prime such an iconic figure, was that (besides being the robot version of John Wayne) he was selfless, brave, and powerful.

And the decepticons were terrified of him. And I think that is what the new movie lacked... Megatron never tried to go toe to toe with prime. He pretended to, then used his guile and sneaky bastard nature to try and get the upper hand on the more powerful Prime.

The fact is that the Optimus Prime toy was originally a Dialclone toy named "Battle Convoy". It was a Japanese toy, not American, yet it had the same colours as the American edition, now dubbed "Optimus Prime". Had Prime landed in my native Hungary, he would be in the same R-W-B colour and not Red-White-Green...

I think it's just coincidence that the Japense when they were making the show placed them in North America and that a good deal of the episodes took place there but as already stated Megs was after the entire planet so calling Prime an "American Hero" is disrespectful, he's a hero to the world and should remain so. After waching this video I realized what made Transformers so great, it had no politics. Sure they landed in the US, and were based in Nevada, I think it was. But think about this, they weren't Americans, and the Dicepticons weren't aliend with Russia, or any other Cold War foes. It was a simple bad guys vs good guys story. That is why everybody loves Optimus Prime, because you could imagine he was fighting Megatron in your own back yard.

Check out the episode from season one where megatron tried to bring Cybertron to earth. The Autobots could have just as easly landed in British Columbia or in the USSR, or anywhere ells, and they would have fought just as hard to protect people from the Deceptacons.
