fuck all the haters i could care less as long as they make corvettes an camaros i loved my vette and i will be getting a zr1 soon and possibly a z06... lets get it gm, i kno you can do it
I very much doubt the legality of cluttering the windscreen... the window infact, with information that the onboard computer finds important. That might not conincide with what the driver needs to be looking at right at that moment. I can see the lawsuits already. The pink thing was flashing on a road sign so I didnt see the oncoming car. BANG!
And how about the hundreds of people that would sue them by saying there was information and shit all over my windscreen so I didnt see what I was doing and had an accident. What about those claims.
But that is the thing people can see with this type of system.
It is a heads up display which means that people can concentrate on the road.
This type of system improves driver awareness as it is the case on commerical airliners that use augmented display system.
It will make drivers aware of other cars that they have missed as well as people and animals at the side of the road. This type of system can also make people aware of important road side safety signs.
"TOYOTA KILLING INNOCENT AMERICANS" have been all over the news for 5 years now. Due to the speculations around accelerating Toyotas, now, every single time a Toyota crashes, the driver claims "omg... It tried to kill me" inorder to cash in from lawsuits. Even tho there has never been found faults in any of these cars. The media jumped on it and so did GM and Chrysler in an attempt to claw back some desperately needed market shares. Naturally companies are afraid to try such new tech.
What Im saying is... Doubtless there would be inprovements to safety. But aslong as america has a legal system that allows anyone to put forth ridiculous claims inorder to cash in, people will be reluctant to implement it. You could remove the driver alltogether and have a driverless car with alot less chance for accidents. But when an accident DOES happen, the driver is not to blame and can and will sue the company that built it for billions for putting his life in danger.
Don't bother with this, no one wants it, or can afford a car with one, save the development money.
Pity that the Augmented Reality screen does not show the coming mega-shares crash that will bring the General Motors company right back down to making motor-scooters in order to survive in the coming 2012 depression.
putting a video camera on the back of your car to keep from smashing into your wife's gardening tools is one thing but do we really need one more distraction when driving on the highway?
@S4mowns GM should make a set of clear glasses that the driver can wear that make the images on the screen appear, so that passengers don't see what's on the screen. Or they could have two different images projected for driver and passenger.
He missed the most important point, for fun. If you made the SDK open source imagine what crazy mods people would make for it.
LSD vision would be awesome. Neon roads, rainbow sky. Probably not very safe, but then again, driver fatigue would probably not happen as you wouldn't fall asleep from boredom on long journeys.
this is old technology, they're just now starting to implement it? what else they could be doing but aren't... if anyone's interested, do a search for a documentary on how GM bought up the trollies (clean-efficient public transportation) to replace it with their awesome automobiles.
Shit GM, focus on making cars people actually want to buy. Technology that's a decade away - or whatever - doesn't help you - if you go bankrupt before that.
While its true that American cars do suck when it comes to ergonomics, reliability, and fuel efficiency, it's also important to be innovative. They should focus on both, but probably more on building cars that don't feel and drive like cheap plastic.
If we get that advanced we'll likely also develop computers/machines that maintain our brain and physique. We'll also have genetic engineering and all become super humans.
The idea is great and will come to a car near you in the future, but hopefully more fancy than this. All I see in this video are some hand-drawn colored lines on a windshield imposed over still images .. and a talking head explaining the miracle. In 1994 the pilots of an Apache helicopter would see a digital representation of the outside world with actual meaning added to the buildings and objects, what happened to that technology?

Looks like nothing more than declassified HUD technology. More likely however, they actually %$^*&*) reinvented the wheel.

It would be safer for people to use this system than using a mobile or gps device.
This type of system could also reduce road accidents and in turn reduce the total number of claim.
The pink thing flashing could also highlight oncoming traffic and avoid accidents.

There will be law no doubt. but the benifits for the whole system will be that it will reduce accidents.
and these types of system will also allow for real data in the case of road accidents. as the system can monitor driver reactions and drive awareness.
and the road sensor can also be used as evidence in accidents. as they will record road data and drive data.
this type of system will be the beginning of the end of road accidents. as will automated cars.

I wonder... a hundred years from now, with computers doing everything for us. Will we be completely degenerate?
I mean... we don't exercise our brains any more. We just take in information and act upon them out of instict or thought in sequences.
Maybe that's the point too.
