If internships aren't paid, it means getting a leg up on the career ladder is reserved for those whose parents can fund them to work for free. That's something that's just not an option for most people. If employers are serious about getting the best people in on internships, they don't need to be gold plated, but they at least need to be funded enough to be realistically available to everyone.
