First time i read this i was 4, it was a gift from my mum's best friend who is very close to me. I was quite disappointed that it was a book, and sulked in my bedroom (i was a spoiled brat!) but then that close woman came up to my bedroom and read it to me. I didn't really understand it. Finally my mother explained it to me and i cried. It made me feel so sad. I still have that book in my shelf, the front cover almost completely ruined, but i still read all the time. It is my favourite book!
@Jewels17981 Thanks so much for your description. I've got a 4 year old daughter, and she hears, yet does not seem to quite "get" this story. It's good to know that time and perhaps another translator will fix that. :-)
I absolutely love this story. I'm going to get a tattoo in dedication to my love of this story and I also lost my copy of the giving tree and I am quite upset
To me, this is a metaphor of God's Love for us. Totally giving, hoping for nothing in return except..love. He was loving enough to give his angels free will, only to be betrayed by one he loved most. For love of flesh many left him & then impregnated women of the earth with their selfish seed, & again...His heart broke. To stop all the madness he was intent on destroying everyone BUT...again...He loved, & saved us thru Noah. Finally He suffered with His Son Yeshua to stop Satan from claiming us.
This is my fave - I've used it twice now on my kids' website (for Sunday School).
Also, you've inspired me - I'm going to use it in an article for my Examiner.com column. Can't wait to get it done. Thanks for sharing this. I'll come back and post the link after it's finished.
@beccastew22 In addition to this read (if you haven't already) The Happy Prince & The Selfish Giant (Oscar Wilde) All 3 of these never fail to break my heart open with love. The love of God is as monumental & indescribable as the beautiful innocence of little children; which of course is Love of God personified. And tho the seed of Satan resides in us all, you can still see what is perfect about God through these little ones. These 3 stories are good at bringing our souls to that awareness.
Such a great story, i cry for a long time when i thought about it, i was at school and my teacher showed it to us and several people cryed and i held back the tears, such a touching story. i cant believe that the boy would be so bad to the tree. When my mum watched it she cryed too. So sad. *crys* *crys*. thx for sharing it with us
It's like a mother and a child. The child gets what he want from the mother and she tries to give him even though she is left with nothing. So sad... absolutely touching... :*) a very meaningful story
just discovered this. what a work of utter humanity. brings tears to your eyes and an acute sense of shame. we take so much from our parents, abuse them and don't see it. but if a work of art can awaken something in us then it's truly a work of genius. love your parents! they're only around so long...
I read the words to my 3 year old son as we watched the video, and he cried. He was so touched by the way the tree was treated by the boy, he cried. I was shocked.
this made me cry . . . all the tree wanted was for the boy to be happy, and she gave him everything she had, and to him it was almost never enough. this is a very great book, i love it very much. 5/5
GOOD JOB ! I loved this book when I was a little girl, now I'm in my 30's and still love it. I had to listen to the songs a few times to understand what they were talking about, and I'd like to say, the songs fit with the video. Thank you for taking the time to share this with us.
Aw, I love the songs.
