Being from Minnesota, I grew up watching Modano so I know he's a professional and there was nothing malicious about this, but still...I cannot at all understand what the hell he was doing here.

That's... really weird. Modano's not the type to do that on purpose, to the best of my ability, but that was a weird move. All I can figure is he thought he was about to fall and tried to swing his momentum up to right himself and it just went horribly wrong.

It looks more like he stopped shorter than he intended, possibly because he overestimated his distance from the boards, and that the "jump" was more of a reaction to the boards suddenly being there. I highly doubt someone with as much skill and experience as modano would randomly jump and kick his legs out like that. Even Heward acknowledges it as a pure accident

It looks to me like he was spinning his leg around to throw a hip back into the guy who checked him into the boards. I've done that a thousand times, but never with my foot that high, and never has another guy come in at that unfortunate a time. I'd call it a preventable accident. He doesn't neccesarily deserve a suspension, but he should be smarter than that. A few inches lower and Heward is dead.

I can't think of any reason that Modano would put his foot up that high. The puck wasn't in the air, and he definitely didn't do it to keep his balance. That being said, I don't think it was intentional, either. It's just an unfortunate accident.

That wasn't intentional, Modano isn't the kind of player that would throw a cheap shot. I don't think any player would do that (Other than Sutton or Tucker). Heward is a trooper, pool of blood and a 10 CM cut, and he still got up quicker than Briere.
