This is THE BEST version of this song! I don't like the new version he recorded when he has short hair. It doesn't have the same soulfullness as this one. Many Thanks Don!
I wish he played like this in the new rpoland upload of him playing his song... I don't get that good feeling from it as much as i do from this live performance.
Contrary to most people's opinions, though I enjoy Most of Andy's music over Don's (Not a huge fan of blues) I really love Don's drive in his music. In other words, I like Don's original better because he rocks harder.
@Ca2roline Then you definitely don't want to watch my poor cover of this song. On the flip side, I was planning on rerecording it once I got new strings for my breedlove.. But yeah, I love this one most.
yes its true.alot of people discover Don Ross through Andy Mckee. On top of that If Andy is difficult to play, Ross is impossible to play! thats why more people can relate to Andy
Unless you have really strong natural nails, they will get eaten alive by the steel strings. Hence, the frech manicure. I have heard of other guitarists who play this style fortifying there nails with a combination of crazy glue and baking powder applied in layers. This makes the edge of the nail much stronger. I think Piere bensouson and danny heinz do something like this.
I don't understand why people get so pissed off about this. Preston Reed fans get mad about Andy's exposure too. Everyone has different tastes ...why get mad about people not agreeing with you?
As to why Andy is more popular... IMO Don writes better tunes, but I think Andy's sound is best. I think he has a good touch, and personally, I like his rhythms better.
But that's just me. I don't care who is more "popular", as long as they both keep producing great music for me to listen to.
Yes, but at the same time, I'd have no idea who Don Ross was (or how unbelievably awesome he was) if it weren't for Andy... And I'm sure I'm not alone. I imagine a ton of people find Don through him.
Yes and no. Yes, Don's nails are not his own. No, he doesn't use fake plastic nails and glue. He gets his nails applied by a professional manicurist. You know, like a chick. He jokes about this all the time ... when he walks into a nail salon and asks for a French manicure on one hand, he gets some looks.
@guitarmusic1 And sometimes he even gloats just so he doesnt seem gay or anything
"Oh yeah, im a musician *flicks hair* yeah i have a concert tonight"
I went to a 10 people seminar with him and he was telling us all these stories about broken nails. Like when he ran into a salon in Germany after breaking the nail on his middle finger. Doesnt know a word of German, so hes standing in the door, speaking english with his middle finger up, pointing at it to the nail professional. Hes a funny guy XD.
yes, it is. Very few fingerstyle artists jump into the realm of jazz. But, I do believe that this does qualify. He was feeling that swinging pendulum and just going off.
Whoa, the improv. section in the middle was unexpected and really quite amazing. I really prefer it in C as opposed to the B which is heard on 'Passion Session' and the standard tuning for a baritone guitar. Don Ross is an inspiration, and I wish I could play like he can.
I so agree with all the person said below me...It adds so much more to a performance, seeing a person play, showing emotion and feeling, expressions on their face...and body language..This guy is really getting down to it...Phenomenal...:-)
This video motivated me to buy Don Ross's Passion Session CD. To be honest, I was a little disappointed that this song felt more mild and deliberate on the CD. It was still great, but the way he was playing in this video is phenomenal. So energetic, so natural feeling.
I think he should put a remake of the song on a CD, played like he plays it in this video. Faster, livelier, and more natural. This is absolutely amazing. Watching him in action is awesome too. Simply incredible.
to my opinion, andy has a brighter sound, better harmonics, mybe more precise in melodies ; but on ht e other hand don has definitily a better rythm, a better felling.
im not too sure if andy does better harmonics or is more precise. Keep in mind, Don is a whole lot older than Andy and definitely has more skills. They're still both outstanding though!
totally agree with you there. I don't understand why andy is so much more famous. I mean if you try to find tabs of this song all you find is andy mckee andy mckee andy mckee andy mckee andy mckee andy mckee andy mckee even with don's own song...
SHIZZ-NITT- Covers this guy quite nicely!- Again- Don you Andy are the shit! please keep it up!- Maybe you will consider "jamming" with the regular humans sometime yes?
Don Ross is the shizz-nitt. I advise anyone to get his 2 part DVD from his site. I have a friend that wants to learn to play because of Don. 5/5 stars, this is the best version.
Don Ross is a musical genious! Not only have he drawn this FUNKY groove out of his head, but he is such a showman! Look at the way he is into his music, nodding his head, dancin and groovin to the song. Freakin brilliant:D
Don Ross reminds me of my High School music teacher...Except Don actually knows how to play and enjoy himself at the same time...Don't think my teacher ever mastered that -.-...Hurrah for Palmerton Highschool where the word Teacher must be at least 10 or more words away from the word Happy.
Absolutely incredible. I am by no means a musician, but even I can see the beauty in the complexity, genuineness, and emotion this music embodies. I actually just went to his site and ordered a copy of Passion Session. I don't feel most of today's music is worth buying. This definitely is worth it.
Yeah for real. All the SAME fricken chord progressions. Thats why in my band I try to be original on every song. haha no typical stinking progressions. GAH!
I respect what your saying. But to say that little music today is worth buying is overstepping the mark a bit I think. There is an abundance of amazing music. It just takes a bit of scratching beneath the surface to find it.
his guitar can't be tuned in B standard. If you check out the Andy Mckee version (which is in b) this sounds about a semitone higher (half step) which puts it in C.
Re: "Don vs. Andy" war. IMO, a good musician always makes a tune his own, so Andy's version is just different - its Andy's. Some of us prefer one, some the other. Have to say though that Andy is probably the one guitarist who's done the most to popularize "heavy wood" on YouTube!
i agreee to a musician making a cover his own, prime example IMO is Johnny Cash covering rusty cage, JC's version is a signature to Johnny. That said, there is little deviation btween andys version and dons, so dont you think that don would have a natural ability to play tight trite night to this elevated tempo with adlibbing parts b/c it is his creation?
i now realize who replied to my original comment...i am an idiot, and apoligize. I cant wait to see a show someday. Btw, both your guys talent and skill is mind boggling. You did truly attack this song here!!
i would never say that don is better than andy or that andy is better than don, but i think don just showed who owns tight trite night...this is brilliant!!
Andy does a good cover of this, but when Don plays it, you can tell the song is coming straight from his soul. Don's energy and technicality are unmatched, IMO.
My god... I was completely blown away by this!:P He sucks you in to the song and takes you on a friggin ride! He is truly a master and commander of the guitar.
i love this sngs just with solo guitar but imagine them played with carter beuford on the drums or vinnie colaiuta or dennis chambers!!this is THE groove!it would be awesome...
This is a live version, not a studio version. Plus, a lot of other factors such as the recording quality could have been effected Don's playing. This version is a lot more lively that Mckee's. Don composed this song, so obviously, his own interpretation is better, imo at least.
nononono, i hate the argument of "they composed it, so their version is better" it is a load of shit in most cases.
don is an exceptional guitar player and i love the passion he puts into his live performances, just i think andy's version and all round guitar playing is better.
but as u say, the audio quality here isn't as good as andy's. (tbh i think tommy emmanuel beats them both)
muppet i think you need to get off the pipe man its frying your brain. first of all andys version of this song isnt even in the same league as don. don totally killed this song. there is not one person on this planet who can play that tune any better. and secondly both andy and don would wipe the floor with your boy tommy emmanuel
its tough to compare this version with Andy Mckee's because of the quality. but i really enjoy the right hand technique McKee uses, but idk I personally favor the Andy McKee cover but Don Ross' still made an amazing song and plays it with such powerful emotion and that is what seperates them from the rest.
Hey Mrpeevy9, just a little FYI...in a recent show put on by Andy and Don...Don actually mentioned he prefers Andy's version to his own :) Just thought I'd mention it. I personally like them both...they have different feels.
Hey dude also just to let you know...it's called modesty. Ya know guys like those 2 both have it. And I am sure they say the same thing about each other. No one likes what they create. =] They always love someone else take on it. It's all opinion though. I mean I go with Don on this song. Especially this video. So much energy. Andy just seems like he on a pharmy compared to don. Just be happy all of you that you have found these 2 great guitarist. Spread their music for all to hear.
Wow, and here I thought Andy Mckee's piece in Tight Trite Night was good, but Don Ross's piece is better... but when they duo on this... that's the best.
That's the difference between him and mainstream. Mainstream does it for popularity and money, not because they are in love with music. Ross is completely different, he craves music and it is his life. Mainstream sucks, it's not even good music and people are throwing millions of dollars at these people.

I can play both the don ross version and the andy mckee version and I think dons version is a hell of alot more difficult to pull off

That. is. awesome.

at the 2:30 mark he leaves the original tune and just jams the fuck out till the 5:07 mark, never missing the beat or a note. Bravo.

I think he's somewhere ese while playing.
Abstraction from the concert, I mean.
Maybe when the music is over he wonders about that crowd with a smile in their faces
salvoben 4 years ago
Everyone in the crowd should get up and start dancin' and groovin' to The Don. I mean comon dont tell me you dont want to... :P

i like Andy Mckee's version better but this is amazing. their both the best guitar players ive ever hered
CowsEatPenguins 4 years ago
This is a live version, not a studio version. Plus, a lot of other factors such as the recording quality could have been effected Don's playing. This version is a lot more lively that Mckee's. Don composed this song, so obviously, his own interpretation is better, imo at least.

nononono, i hate the argument of "they composed it, so their version is better" it is a load of shit in most cases.
don is an exceptional guitar player and i love the passion he puts into his live performances, just i think andy's version and all round guitar playing is better.
but as u say, the audio quality here isn't as good as andy's. (tbh i think tommy emmanuel beats them both)
SomeMuppet 4 years ago
muppet i think you need to get off the pipe man its frying your brain. first of all andys version of this song isnt even in the same league as don. don totally killed this song. there is not one person on this planet who can play that tune any better. and secondly both andy and don would wipe the floor with your boy tommy emmanuel

sparksic i couldnt have said it better.

its tough to compare this version with Andy Mckee's because of the quality. but i really enjoy the right hand technique McKee uses, but idk I personally favor the Andy McKee cover but Don Ross' still made an amazing song and plays it with such powerful emotion and that is what seperates them from the rest.
LordRavenX8 3 years ago
i have to disagree with LordRavenX8. don ross a so much more feel in his version than mckee. mckees is to mellow.
mrpeevy9 3 years ago

DedHedJosh 3 years ago 2
Ah, I treat em as two different songs that happen to have the same title. They both kick ass.
PeterTheEvilBastard 3 years ago 2
Wow, and here I thought Andy Mckee's piece in Tight Trite Night was good, but Don Ross's piece is better... but when they duo on this... that's the best.

Off the record, what the duce is a Baritone? :)
What ever. Love his sounds!
perathras 4 years ago 5
Wikipedia: The baritone guitar is a variation on the standard guitar, with a longer scale length that allows it to be tuned to a lower range.

Why isn't he world famous? His songwriting, his performances and his ability are both superb.
meatflowers 4 years ago 4
i dont think its about being world famous to him...its all about the music
sthpaw999 4 years ago 6
That's the difference between him and mainstream. Mainstream does it for popularity and money, not because they are in love with music. Ross is completely different, he craves music and it is his life. Mainstream sucks, it's not even good music and people are throwing millions of dollars at these people.
xiaosainzboy 4 years ago 3
well i think older mainstream was good, like Hendrix, cream, led zeppelin, ect. but i agree mainstream now is complete shit.
LordRavenX8 4 years ago
he is famous, hes just not mainstream
