Understanding the Ancient Regime, the Revolution of 1789, and the Consulat/Empire is the key for understanding modern France and its contradictions :)
In my humble opinion.
Anyway, Bonne Année 2011, Happy New Year 2011 to all!
Without Napoleon and the 1st empire, it's more than probable that a "restauration" of the monarchy would have been more durable and difficult to reject later on, because too close of the Ancient Regime. Because France was an Empire based of the ideas of the 1st Republic, 2 new generations of frenchmen learnt to live for their precious liberty and their hate to men wearing crowns. And till today you can feel it in the air in France.
@The author of the video: I salute your initiative and highly respect for your admiration for l'Empereur... now, if you allow me a comment: REMOVE THAT SONG IN ENGLISH! NAPOLEON WOULD HAVE VOMITED IT :P (just saying ^^)
@Napoleon501ste Napoléon was already lost before Waterloo. Remember that it took place AFTER the 100 days, AFTER his 1st exile on Elba. There were no Grande Amrée anymore, no more great Napoleon to lead the man, he was tired, ill, badly preparated. Even with a hypothetical won at Waterloo, he would have been crushed later on. Only thing to remember is that France kept the fight for 20+ years with a 1-50 win/loss ratio in battles, defeating 5 coalitions. And the french republic is safe.

What a great man he was. You can say everything about him, but what he achieved is amazing. And like the song says he was only Human.

@Draksen He should have won in Waterloo, the whole world would speak French if he had won. So it is his own fault.
