celestial.., i wonder what south asia would be without classical Indian music. Great invention of humanity...the music strings in one's heart dance with each note. Really there is no match to classical Indian music and thank God India has not lost this treasure for thousands of centuries and thanks to masters of music like these who are keeping it alive and tons of other musicians who are doing their each and every part towards it.

I think its cool how there are so many similarities between the worlds cultures, music, religions etc. Like the guy on the very left with the hammered dulcimer type instrument. It almost makes the music sound like its from the Celts or something!

That instrument is called a Santoor. And you're right - the world over people make music with three basic methods vibrating air columns, vibrating strings and percussion (vibrating membranes). In that respect, similarities are inevitable.

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is the santoor player. I missed seeing him play at an area high school twenty years ago and I'm still kicking myself!

I did see Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia in concert at Cleveland State University. Amazing performance!

Pandit Hariprasad did the opening ceremony at the Curve Theatre in Leicester, England. Went there to watch him - was an absolutely excellent performance. He was accompanied by Rakesh Chaurasia, Vijay Ghate and Bhavani Shankar. He was also joking about with the crowd. This guy is too good.
