The two are not related. You play as Joel. He smuggles goods into and out of quarantine zones. His job is to 'smuggle' Ellie out of the quarantine zone she has lived in her whole life. The details as to why she is being smuggled out is unknown, but she will be useful in combat. By useful, i mean distracting enemies by throwing bricks at them. Yay.
