This has always been one of my favorite FF VIII tracks. It reminds me of the more classic early NES era town themes and the Final Fantasy theme music (not the Prelude).  It also has a bit of a Seiken Densetsu 1 and SaGa 2 feel to it to me.

Your rendition, though a bit different in pace, is excellent!

@chrisatronx I'm pretty sure it doesn't remain diatonic. It stays in E, but there are many chords that are borrowed from different keys (For instance, the G# major at 2:04--in E, that should be minor.) and the end modulates quickly to the unrelated key of (I think) C Major.

you can clearly see that when nobuo composed this he had some ff7 on his mind. good old times. What´s awesome is that the new composer for ff13 did an awesome job and brought fresh types of music but with that ff feel to it, I feel we´re in good hands with Masausu.
