@52appaZ Man, I'm 15 and listen to this. Really, soundtracks aren't that bad, in fact, I like them a lot (but depends on the soundtrack, mostly.) and like this and other old bands that a guy like me shouldn't know. But, of course, Last.Fm exists.

@52appaZ I disagree. I am only 21, and only really got into music at 17, but I havent looked back. Although i dont own a UFO record, yet, there are many young people whom ignore the shit that comes out nowadays.
This version is incomplete! The tail end of the song was cut off... Sammy, you must fix this. Rock Bottom is the finest rock song ever performed!!! You will pay dearly in karma if not fixed...
Just discovered that this solo is a splice from two different shows! After listening for over 30 years. This used to be my "guitar bible" when I was learning the instrument back in 79-80. Can't help to feel a little disappointed knowing that what I thought was a single glorious take is actually two! Nothing against Michael, however. I still think he is the greatest.
@johhnybblum Go to "Rock Bottom 1978" from October 16,1978 from Cleveland. During the second harmony line with the keyboards at around 5:55 it IS the exact same version to the end as on Strangers. Now,during the first half from Cleveland, Michael botched a few notes (only human) So Ron Nevison carefully spliced the first half from a Chicago gig with the second half from Cleveland. I was shocked when I first heard it but things like this occur when you make a live album. He is still the greatest.
3:55 till I die.....Heard this a thousand times........Never get, or will it be, enough.....even after i am dead......This solo will last the test of Time.................PEACE
@ChristianU2ubeh To some extent i agree - here is my list of perf. of all time ! 1) Beethov. 3 symp. - 1 mov - Karajan 2) Beethov. 3 symp. - 2 mov - Karajan 3) Mozarts 21 piano concerto 1 mov. - Gulda 4) Nottingham lace live - Buckethead 5) UFO - Strangers ... - Rock Bottom 6) Tannhauser March - Wagner 7) Anton Bruckners 9 sym. 1 mov. - Karajan 8) Victim of Changes - Unleashed in the East - Judas P. 9) Strange Kind of Woman - Made in Japan - Deep Purple 10) Ace of Spades - Motorh.

I think it would be pretty difficult to piece together this solo from different performances. Live, a band's tone changes from night to night, as does the tempo sometimes. If Ron Nevison tried to piece together pieces of different solos over the band's backing tracks from one performance, I'd think those tracks would sound a little different and it would be obvious -- unless taken direct from the mixing board, which this wasn't.
Also, Schenker has staunchly claimed over the years that his solos on this record were NOT overdubbed. So I'd like to read that article you mention. Unfortunately, my GP back issues only go back to about 1980.

Long live rock'n roll, enjoy music and ... let it roll !
Theres is nothing greater than the magic that begins at 7:17 with that ,,flurry of sliding hammer-ons and pull-offs and the phenomenon that occurs at around 7:35 as the speed descends and the notes become so brittle they sound like glass breaking and finally the little pentatonic run and big vibrato on the A string. Then he pretty much just lets go of everything at 7:42 just long enough for it to let out a open G hiss/breath as he sets up for the next set of trills up the neck in Em pentatonic.
@ertolv Rush is a fuckin overated band and i know cause I am Canadian and I hate them. While Rush and UFO toured together, Lifeson would sneak in early to watch Michael play. Fact!!!
@EUguitarRULE hahaha Rush overrated. Bullshit. Who cares if Alex watched Shenk play? He's amazing, it's not sneaking in if he wants to watch a guitar genius play. If you can listen to an album like Farewell to Kings or Hemispheres and call that overrated then you don't have the slightest clue what you're on about. Just because UFO is great doesn't mean you have to slam another incredible band. You don't have to love the music but at least respect it.
Michael and I hung around a bit in 1985 or 84 in Newport Beach, CA. We would go out partying at places like Woodys Wharf and the Red Onion etc. At the time he was totally infatuated with the Nancy Wilson from Heart. Michael was intense in everything he did back then. We would get into fights at bars every so often and Mike wasn't going to use his hands in a fight because of a possible injury that may prevent him from playing so he would kick them Kung fu style. Just a little history.....
Saw this band in Utica NY in 1977(8?). Mike was so loaded they had to stand him up in front of his amp and put the guitar on him. He then proceeded to HAMMER thru every lick and song like a madman. It was positively FRIGHTENING. Great, great rock guitarist who was WAY ahead of his time in the genre.
@meatwarwick Strangers in the Night is very solid live album with amazing rocking tunes and guitar solos but NOTHING beats "Made In Japan" by Deep Purple.
You know...the first live group I saw was in 1972, it was Deep Purple backed up by Nazereth......they played basically Made in Japan and yes you maybe right, that one maybe the best! But hey, lets not argue....they are Both BRILLIANT!!
rudolf always likes his little bro playing especially about his ability to inject his emotion into his playing but alas his little bro si fucked in the head
when uli step in rudolf doesnt even have to play that much other than let the maestro took care everything but uli himself was no different than mike his mind always going somewhere
and jab , rudolf didnt like his playing coz he thought jab was too techinical but jab was a total team player
yeah i read that too where MS was saying he wanted to be one of the best guitarist and his bro wanted to have his band as a world wide status
but i think king of deep right about one of the reason MS left scop was because he thought germany was getting him nowhere and i believe at that time UK was the most happening place as far as rock scene is concerned ....they have the beatles , stones , cream , zeppelin , deep purple ....si it makes logical sense for young mad mikey to jump into ufo
Greatest live album of all time, all the way through. Don't think Michael was too good for the Scorpions, but ask his brother who the better guitarist is.
Michael leaving the Scorpions had nothing to do with their talent. It had everything to do with the country they were stuck in. He wanted to join a band that was already established and selling some records and in a country other than Germany. He wanted to get out of Germany and knew he had to get to England. UFO was a perfect situation. Already somewhat popular in Europe and based in England. He didn't want to be stuck in Germany for years and years getting nowhere.
Excellent guitar work as usual great album and my favorite UFO song. In the spongebob episode where the dude calls squidward and his answering machine says youve reached the home of unrecognized talent that should be UFO' s answering machine as well
Michael Schenker way to good for the Scorps. Are you high?
The Scorps rocked in the 70's. Michael Schenker and Ulrich Roth are my 2 favorite guitar players all time. But you obviously haven't heard the Scorpions 70's stuff. Checkout Tokyo Tapes. This album and that one are THE 2 best hard rock live albums all time. No doubt. Smokin...............
@kingofthedeep Dude this guy isn't that high, Schenk said he was leaving the scorpions because he wanted to be the greatest guitarist in the world. The scorpions on the other hand wanted to be the greatest band in the world. Scops just didn't have what he wanted...
I dont know where you got your info but its wrong. I have many interviews with Michael. He told Rudy early on with the Scorps if he had a chance to go to another established band from somewhere other than Germany he would do it. Germany was not a good place to be to break it. Scorps opened for UFO and the guitar player for them forgot his passport. So he didn't make the trip to Germany. Schenker filled in on lead on a short notice. The rest is history.
@kingofthedeep Oh ok... you have many interviews... I guess you should get more interviews because you're missing the one where Schenker said he wanted to be the greatest guitarist while his bro wanted to be in the greatest band. You're also missing the point: His drive to be the greatest is at the root of him leaving the scorpions and Michael was way too good for the scorpions. Yes, Tokyo Tapes are amazing.
No you are missing the point. He said he had basically no chance of ever making it in a band from Germany. He said he had to go either to England or USA. Scorpions were not in the position to leave Germany. Thats why he left. It had nothing to do with the Scorpions not being "good enough". He also told Ruduolf much a year or so before he left. "If I ever have a chance to go to a more established band(like UFO at the time) anywhere other than Germany. I'm gone".
His right KOTD thats what Schenker said. During mid to late 70's the already established player stood aside and just watched this guy with one exception and thats the Douchebag from Deep Purple. Yes his equal but early 80's Michael was on top alone.
This guys right. Whenever people ask me what music I like I sometimes mention The Scorpions. They're immediate reaction usually is 'Oh, that lame band that did Winds of Change' and 'Rock you like an Hurricane'. It's like 2 different bands! From Lonesome Crow to Lovedrive the Scorpions were brilliant! I'd recommend their 70's albums to any serious Hard Rock/Metal fan.
he was also about to rejoin them during Lovedrive when Mogg kicked him out of UFO, but he was still too wasted on drugs and decided to let Jabs stay as lead, which is why Michael played lead on 3 lovedrive songs
Hey he wasnt kicked out of UFO, he left UFO and thank God he did, Michael was UFO infat he owns the right to UFO band but gave the rights back to Phil and Way.
saw ufo at the starwood in hollywood 1975 2 bucks 2 get in held about 200 heads been schenker fan ever since what afuckin show blew the roof off that place saw msg this june in vegas michael is still king he closed the show with dr.dr then rock bottom i handed him a gold flyin v i snaked from the hard rock u know they hold up the ropes in the hallways when he bowed he held that v high over his head then tucked it in his jacket pocket and gave me the look u know like thank you fuckin great

Acheté d'occas. après une chronique convaincante dans "Best" (le meilleur magazine musique que j'ai pu lire), et celui que j'ai le plus écouté !
Long live rock'n roll, enjoy music, and... let it roll !

@jackspy1000 the best live album ever is "All The World´s A Stage" by the group Rush
ertolv 1 year ago
@ertolv Rush is a fuckin overated band and i know cause I am Canadian and I hate them. While Rush and UFO toured together, Lifeson would sneak in early to watch Michael play. Fact!!!
EUguitarRULE 1 year ago

@hocuspocus96
You know...the first live group I saw was in 1972, it was Deep Purple backed up by Nazereth......they played basically Made in Japan and yes you maybe right, that one maybe the best! But hey, lets not argue....they are Both BRILLIANT!!
meatwarwick 1 year ago
@hocuspocus96 The guitar work on Made in Japan is pale compared to this album.

Playing a good solo is something folks these days cannot do anymore. It is a lost art.

Magnificent. Solo starts 4.10ish onwards. LOVE that muted part at 5.52 is fantastic. Schenks is the business

the best things about mad mike and uli playings are they dont sound like they r trying to impress u
their solos were never somekind a technical exercise bullshit
i love these 2 along with gary moore dearly
god bless those 3

rudolf always likes his little bro playing especially about his ability to inject his emotion into his playing but alas his little bro si fucked in the head
when uli step in rudolf doesnt even have to play that much other than let the maestro took care everything but uli himself was no different than mike his mind always going somewhere
and jab , rudolf didnt like his playing coz he thought jab was too techinical but jab was a total team player
johnqie 2 years ago 2
yeah i read that too where MS was saying he wanted to be one of the best guitarist and his bro wanted to have his band as a world wide status
but i think king of deep right about one of the reason MS left scop was because he thought germany was getting him nowhere and i believe at that time UK was the most happening place as far as rock scene is concerned ....they have the beatles , stones , cream , zeppelin , deep purple ....si it makes logical sense for young mad mikey to jump into ufo
johnqie 2 years ago 2
from the 7:16 min on is one of the best f'n guitar solos ever...

Greatest live album of all time, all the way through. Don't think Michael was too good for the Scorpions, but ask his brother who the better guitarist is.
Gardnereen 2 years ago
Oh he knows who's "better". But Rudolf writes great, great songs. So does Michael.
kingofthedeep 2 years ago 2
Michael leaving the Scorpions had nothing to do with their talent. It had everything to do with the country they were stuck in. He wanted to join a band that was already established and selling some records and in a country other than Germany. He wanted to get out of Germany and knew he had to get to England. UFO was a perfect situation. Already somewhat popular in Europe and based in England. He didn't want to be stuck in Germany for years and years getting nowhere.
kingofthedeep 2 years ago
Excellent guitar work as usual great album and my favorite UFO song. In the spongebob episode where the dude calls squidward and his answering machine says youve reached the home of unrecognized talent that should be UFO' s answering machine as well
EddieVH666 2 years ago 2
michael was way to good for scorpions
vadm13 2 years ago 5
Michael Schenker way to good for the Scorps. Are you high?
The Scorps rocked in the 70's. Michael Schenker and Ulrich Roth are my 2 favorite guitar players all time. But you obviously haven't heard the Scorpions 70's stuff. Checkout Tokyo Tapes. This album and that one are THE 2 best hard rock live albums all time. No doubt. Smokin...............
kingofthedeep 2 years ago 2
@kingofthedeep Dude this guy isn't that high, Schenk said he was leaving the scorpions because he wanted to be the greatest guitarist in the world. The scorpions on the other hand wanted to be the greatest band in the world. Scops just didn't have what he wanted...
steakncheddar 2 years ago
I dont know where you got your info but its wrong. I have many interviews with Michael. He told Rudy early on with the Scorps if he had a chance to go to another established band from somewhere other than Germany he would do it. Germany was not a good place to be to break it. Scorps opened for UFO and the guitar player for them forgot his passport. So he didn't make the trip to Germany. Schenker filled in on lead on a short notice. The rest is history.
kingofthedeep 2 years ago
@kingofthedeep Oh ok... you have many interviews... I guess you should get more interviews because you're missing the one where Schenker said he wanted to be the greatest guitarist while his bro wanted to be in the greatest band. You're also missing the point: His drive to be the greatest is at the root of him leaving the scorpions and Michael was way too good for the scorpions. Yes, Tokyo Tapes are amazing.
steakncheddar 2 years ago
No you are missing the point. He said he had basically no chance of ever making it in a band from Germany. He said he had to go either to England or USA. Scorpions were not in the position to leave Germany. Thats why he left. It had nothing to do with the Scorpions not being "good enough". He also told Ruduolf much a year or so before he left. "If I ever have a chance to go to a more established band(like UFO at the time) anywhere other than Germany. I'm gone".
kingofthedeep 2 years ago
His right KOTD thats what Schenker said. During mid to late 70's the already established player stood aside and just watched this guy with one exception and thats the Douchebag from Deep Purple. Yes his equal but early 80's Michael was on top alone.
EUguitarRULE 2 years ago
This guys right. Whenever people ask me what music I like I sometimes mention The Scorpions. They're immediate reaction usually is 'Oh, that lame band that did Winds of Change' and 'Rock you like an Hurricane'. It's like 2 different bands! From Lonesome Crow to Lovedrive the Scorpions were brilliant! I'd recommend their 70's albums to any serious Hard Rock/Metal fan.

Rocked with them 3 times in Southampton, UK back in the 70's. Big Angels crowd, no trouble in town - what a surprise.
