  • advice: use a rubber band instead of string

  • Making this simple because I'm "young." This works because the faster you spin the disk, the more it will look like1 picture. Your mind probably can't handle seeing the disks "properly" as 2 sides/pictures, so it decides to say as if it was one picture. What i mean is that one side of the disk replaces the other side of the disk so fast, your brain doesn't want to be too "complicated" Otherwise, you would get super busy. I hope that was detailed enough?

  • This is becuase when it spins so fast your mind makes it waas if it was one pciture

  • This was originally from "Inuits". These were toys that kids would usually play with.

  • Bird in a cage

  • I love the music

  • spins so fast looks like one thing

  • Nice! You can try the beer lid. That also very fun, you can made diffirent sounds.

One step: prepare a line and make a circle

Two step: through the lid's hole on the middle

    Three step: Spinning

  • Oh my god this is like magic!

  • National geographic did that

  • I watched all of your vids

  • Our mind cannot process the images fast enough so it kind of blends them into one

  • im an adult so do i still need adult supervision?

  • who usualy replies steve?

  • The mind cannot differentiate between the fastness of the images flashing so it blurs them. Not like blurring where something is out of focus, but more of a combining blur.

  • Lol steves video guys! AWESOME.

  • it is spinning so fast that you see both images

  • cool

  • Song Name...?

  • Gonna make the sleepy hollow one, much cooler.

  • i saw this in sleepy hollow

  • Your eyes cant see the change in the flipping, for ex. when you see a fast car it is blurred. same applies to this.

  • COOL! :DD

  • Its just spinnigg so fast but still cool

  • nice...

  • i liked your videos way better when it was you who did the experiments, and explaines yourself, instead of some lame text on the screen. when the videos there more dangerous, you do not have to make every video age appropriate for kids over the age og two!! ;)

  • @marapprech check out our other channel

    YouTube . com/SpanglerScienceTV

That is where we are posting all of Steve's news segments!

  • SICK

  • the only reson its does tht is becuz the human eye cant take how fast it sppins and we cant tell the diff between the two pictures]

  • COOL. you guys should do more illusion videos :D

  • Cool

  • It's called a Thumbatrobe ;)

  • Cool!!!

  • well mine kind of failed because i didn't tie it right and the string came off can it few away and landed on my cats head lolol.......she was sleeping......she got really mad.....and went under my brothers bed......forever

  • faster it spins the more it looks like a solid pictur

  • This works because our eyes are slow.

  • By the same principal that allows us to view 24fps as a moving image in the movie theatre. I believe it's called the rotoscopic effect, or something like that. I can't find much information about it online.

  • Sick and boring science :\

  • Hi are you reading this to

  • WHO SAID YOU COULD DISLIKE?!!!!!

  • how about something really stupendous, like sticking a string to an ice cube with salt?

oh, and if you don't like my comment, don't read it. there's some "sick logic" for ya.

  • Hey Steve can you do a video of when they make a tin boat float on that gas that makes your voice deep (sulfur hexafloride). i think it deserves to be on one of these videos plus its pretty cool to try.

  • My guess is because that some time is taken for the image captured by the eye to be registered in the brain, before that can happen, the next image is out and the eye, again, captures the 2nd image too, while the brain registers both images at the same time for that split second.

  • is that steve doing the experiments or someone else?

  • @Stevespanglerscience do you know where t get dry ice say in spruce grove ab?

  • love your stuff.

started doing one of these about 3 hours ago with my little siblings,

    <3

  • Hi steve! :D haha i just love your videos.

  • 0:54 for replay of epicness...

  • because the human eye can only send so many messages to the brain and so thats why we see the complete flag

  • @cjman313212 it was in Sleepy Hollow!! it was with a cardinal and a cage. I -3 that movie:)

  • Persistence of vision.

  • I don't know how this is scientific, but just visual illusions xD I want things that go BOOM

  • Strobe effect

  • Its done with black magic

  • w0w......i thought the real steve was replying

  • it spins, thats my conclusion

  • Works almost like an active 3d tv. The 2 images are changing so fast that your brain merges the 2 images together.

  • I come for the Science, But I stay for the music :P

  • woooaaah!! INCREDIBLE

  • WOAH INCREDIBLE :O

  • Just wondering but what is Steve doing kmow?

  • I KNOW HOW THIS HAPPENS!

IT'S ALL THE BLUE BEAM PROJECT.

(fyi, I don't actually believe that)

  • @fossil98 Damn. I knew the New World Order is behind this video.

    lol

  • @fossil98 lol good one.

  • wasent this in a movie with johnny depp it was like a monster movie or sumthing

  • @cjman313212 i dont know if its the one your thinkin of, but i think i saw a movie where someone had this but it was a bird on one side and a cage on the other, so spinning it showed the bird in the cage.

  • @cjman313212 It was Sleepy Hollow!

  • what was it like with ellen?

  • Perception Of Vision

  • why are there so many dislikes?

    this is Awesome lol

  • Image retention on the retina. Basically the retina can't keep up with how fast it's going and it appears to be there but it isnt.

  • why so many dislikes

  • because our eyes leave a picture image if we stare at it long enough like looking at the tv and closing your eyes you can see it...so by looking at both long enough they will stay on the white circle and look like a complete flag! :D woot! that was pretty cool actually.

  • Can you make a video on how to make the trashcan that shoots smoke? That isn't very dangerous for kids

  • @Parkfail we have several videos on making that. Search for "Giant Smoke Ring Launcher" or my favorite... "Dry Ice Smoke Ring Launcher" on YouTube!

  • To be honest.. that was pretty cool :D

    ~thumbs up~

  • It's an effect similar to strobing.

If you don't wanna go through all that fuss just look at a car alloy spinning at ~50km/h for the same type of effect.

  • This is science, not dangerous sports, why dislike?

  • Hello Steve r u reading this ?

  • @Emilyheart1177 hello... I'm one of Steve's video guys!

  • @Stevespanglerscience ad me as a freind

  • @Stevespanglerscience no, Its SteveSpamglerScience not with lower case, upper case

  • i liked it :D

  • Can you make a video on how u make the trashcan that shoots smoke?

  • @Prieget we have several videos on making that. Search for "Giant Smoke Ring Launcher" or my favorite... "Dry Ice Smoke Ring Launcher" on YouTube!

  • @Iceleo11 your so right!! im suck a science freak.

  • Nice.

  • @Iceleo11 thanks for the kind words. We will continue to produce science experiment videos for people like you!

  • This was great :D

  • @Stevespanglerscience wow that pretty cool

  • i liked it

  • it's cos our brain's are too slow so we still have the first image in our heads when we see the second :)

  • Love it!!!

  • I used to do that when I din't have my computer :)

  • I remember doing this when I was a kid.

  • Awesome :D

  • To all you haters... I seriously don't know what you're hating about. It should be pretty evident that this channel is not going to be like FPS Russia or what. If you're looking for rockets and explosions and guns and fire then you're in the wrong place. -.-

Anyway, I've seen this trick before, it's cool :D The color disk makes use of the same principle right?

  • @Stevespanglerscience i want to see how to make some fire tornades like what you did on the ellen show

  • @EagleDnB sorry... you will have to go elsewhere for that. We will not teach you how to dangerous experiments. True, we have experiments with fire currently on our channel, but the fire tornado experiment is not something we want people screwing around with at home.

  • bad, boring, boooooo!!!!

  • lol epic

  • that REALLY is "sick science" !! hahaha wooooww......

  • nice.. i have seen more entertaining but this is somthing children can play with :) thanx!

  • wow this sucked

  • @EagleDnB what are you expecting with our videos? An experiment showing you how to make a bomb? Our channel is dedicated to experiments people can do at home with household materials. These are great for a parent to do with their kids. If you think they suck, don't watch.

  • @Stevespanglerscience I Think There AWESOME!!!!! :):)

  • it works because your eye "remembers" the prior image for just enough time to see the next and merge them,

other variations include the zeotrope drum which is fun to do animations for. Precursors to modern day movies

    cool stuff

  • Who's the guy in the video? Did you mention this to someone before?

  • Why all the dislikes this is awesome! and you guys even got your music back.....

  • Is it spinning so fast that it looks like it is not spinning?

  • hi

  • how is this sick?

  • woop

  • :)

  • hi

  • why the dislikes? its for kids to try out and have fun

  • Love that music. :D

  • Was there no other experiment..

  • this is awesome!

  • yay i was the first one the comment!

  • O im not first... the comments have to be approved xD

  • And I just wrote perception of vision when I meant persistance of vision.

  • Perception of vision keeps the image of the stars within the optic nerve whilst the card spins and shows the stripes, at which point the eye sees the stripes but also the stars from earlier showing the entire flag. The card then spins again and the process repeats.

  • god i love your videos

  • booooooring

  • @kristjan117 why are you watching our videos? Don't expect us to show you how to make an explosion. These videos are showing people experiments they can do at home. If you are bored, than maybe our videos are not for you.

  • @Stevespanglerscience i have been subscribed for a long time, i just wasn't amused by this one.

  • HEEY
