@pinkmonkey456 Now that's pretty cool. Your parents are too old to have named you after the song! ...beautiful ;-} What a magical song. Maybe a little eerie, but still one of my long time fav's. ;-}
drugs or no drugs, this is a lovely song. i can't believe a computer animator hasn't adapted this into a ten minute short. i'd make esther wearing fishman's dress :)
@mistastaples yeh but Trey isn't! Fuck drugs>>> I did them for years, From Gerry to Trey > Life is so much better now. Trey 3.0 speaks wonders for sobriety. Don't get me wrong I partied to excess for 3 decades and wouldn't trade that for anything. All I am saying is that life is better without drugs. imho
Harryhood you sound like an idiot. No, you don't need to be on drugs to listen to Phish. I am not using drugs right now and I am enjoying what I am hearing, as I always do. You are obviously not a true Phan if you can't listen without drugs.
You think that your cool because you do drugs, just like you think its cool to listen to Phish when you do drugs, because all of your "friends" do it.
Hey bro i just love phish dude, i like to take roll pills and acid and trip my balls off and groove to the hippie band, cause you absolutely have to be on drugs to listen to phish everyone knows that.
Phish is one of the most dynamic bands ever, and theyre music is far more complex and sophisticated than casual fans can dream of. So there is your hippie band
Yeah, yeah, I was thinking this when I posted my comment, but I've never seen Letterman's band join Phish onstage at the Palace, Van Andel Arena, or The Great Went when they played Julius. Nor was there authentico soul backing on "Before you take another step." Nothing but the Greasy Fizeek, Henrietta.
Just isn't Julius without horns, although the Great Went Julius is my favorite with 7.13.94 a close second. The rest are dust.
this song is all about drug use... the doll is actually some sort of mind expanding compound, the guy at the start is a drug pusher, the church is the religious right and the backlash war on drugs profiteers/prohibitionists that chase her after she tries to expose them to this wonderful thing. But she "rises above" that, she achieves some sort of serenity and flies for a while, but becomes something of a social outcast, endangering her life, before she dies..
Thought that the mob was just trying to tell her the doll was evil but she thought the mob was trying to kill her. Then the doll kills her by drowning her.
yeah.... or maybe it's just a pretty song with dreamlike lyrics that need not be analyzed... Honestly, I like your interpretation and I am definitely not hating on your post... I just feel that the true beauty of this song's lyrics are much more simpler (accessible) than that.
Well, the doll doesn't necessarily represent illicit drugs, your mind can be expanded through education, meditation, experience, information or any number of other things. But I agree that whatever it is, the "normal" society reacts negatively towards it. I love this song.

Along with Julius, this is only moment in time where the studio Phish beats live Phish.
Is it because the harmonies are spot on? Is it because Trey remembers the lyrics?
Well, yes. But mostly because this recording is simply beautiful.
Esther, I love you.

While the band is well-known for such tangibles as epic
three-hour shows, zany lyrics and onstage antics (vacuum
cleaners, chess games and gigantic hot dogs, to name a
few), it's the intangibles - the sheer musical prowess --
which have earned Phish their army of followers. Their
music spans the spectrum of styles; obvious influences come
from rock, jazz, blues and bluegrass.
