Semi tone down. Didn't know this guy but compared to the all time greats his voice sounds limited. There is not much power coming when it matters. That said always in comparison with the greatest.

nie rozumiem Polaków, którzy negatywnie się wypowiadają o tym wykonaniu. włochów rozumiem. oni są wrażliwi na punkcie kończenia ich szkółek głosowych. kto im nie dał zarobić jest be! ale porównywanie tej wersji do wykonania Luciano to już kosmiczne nieporozumienie. ktoś albo nie wie o czym kalaf śpiewa i w jakiej jest scenicznej sytuacji albo jest niewrażliwy na ogromny tragizm bijący z interpretacji jose. pavarotti poprawnie słodzi, ale czuje się, że chce szybko skasować za występ i uzgodnić
z prasą co mają o nim napisać. a prasa i gawiedź go kochali, bo któż im uświetniał występy na odpustach i jarmarkach jak nie wielki luciano. i w każdym brukowcu dodawali płytki z jego ariami.
a cura jest wielkim interpretatorem arii operowych. każde jego wykonanie ma odciśnięte piętno mistrza. ktoś pod "el lucevan e stelle" napisał, że nigdy nie słyszał tak dynamicznie i pełnego bólu wykonania tej arii. zgadzam się z takim stanowiskiem. poprawność głosową zostawmy odpustowym przeciętniakom
poprawność rytmiczną również. zresztą trudno posądzać jose o braki poczucia rytmu - wszak jest z wykształcenia dyrygentem! na wielkie interpretacje stać tylko MISTRZÓW! mr Cura - please, sing to the end of world ... and after!!! I heard hm live a couple of years ago. The voice has deteriorated horribly. Here there is a wobble in the vibrato, but he sounds better than he did live.
good for you, I am glad to hear that. That is true that I am not a soprano... but I know very well classical music and many other musicians very, very nice ! And a nice tenor is Placido Domingo and far so good ! but true, he is not young and handsome anymore !

Milan is small and i will try to get him out for coffee...I respect what he has done for himself so any tips he can give me, I am all for it. I think he's a great interpreter with a great, robust instrument, but I think he has some technical problems which hold his wonderful voice back sometimes. His talent, however, is undeniable. I hope he can get his technical difficulties dealt with, because I want him to have a long career.

And finally, what's so great about singing high notes? Anyway, the usual thing you see in the opera is a tenor who screws up the whole aria and is absolutely unconvincing artistically, BUT the one thing he CAN do is sing his high note. Opera is theater, it s a complex art, it is not about singing notes. And understanding this complexity makes Cura an incredible, memorable artist.
Besides, as someone correctly pointed out, this is a concert of Italian arias. This is really killing to the voice. You don't sing two or three arias with pauses between plus one or two duets, you sing arias for hours without interruption. In the original recording of Jose Cura with Domingo as conductor, I believe, he sings the aria in the original tonality. That means, he can, but does not want to that night.
So what if it's half a tone lower? It fits better the nature of his voice and he does not sound like a squeaking tenor, which I most like about him. Bizet had written Carmen for a soprano, then lowered the part 1 1/2 tones to make it fit for a mezzo - because he found the color of this voice much more suitable for the part. Did he make a mistake in following nature?

I know it's down 1/2 step, but to say it's not Puccini is just silly. In any key, that sweep and arch of the Puccini style is evident. And Cura is nothing if not a showman. The voice is glorious and he has great joy in his face and voice when singing. For me, this is what great vocal classical music is all about. Pull your noses out of the air you purists, and listen to this for what it is - a concert of incredibly beautiful music sung by an enthusiastic and generous artist.

Kevin, is it me, or is there a lack of great tenors these days. Cura and Alagna, both burned early. Kaufmann seems a baritone to me. Ah, the days when DiStefano, Del Monaco. Gigli, Schipa, Bjoerling and so many others, made opera thrilling. Not now.

I heard hm live a couple of years ago. The voice has deteriorated horribly. Here there is a wobble in the vibrato, but he sounds better than he did live.

good for you, I am glad to hear that. That is true that I am not a soprano... but I know very well classical music and many other musicians very, very nice ! And a nice tenor is Placido Domingo and far so good ! but true, he is not young and handsome anymore !

Seriously though, I am an opera fanatic but far more familiar with the sopranos than the males....I had watched Il Trovatore on DVD last week from the library where he played Manrico and Veronica V played Leonora. His singing is wonderful, but he is so beautiful! lol. And check out his website...he gets even hotter with age! OK, let me stop now. Back to serious talk ;)

@htshoward Lets just say I am a soprano singing in Milan and Jose is coming to La Scala to sing..I am trying desperately to get a hold of him. Milan is small and i will try to get him out for coffee...I respect what he has done for himself so any tips he can give me, I am all for it. I just hope I don't try to jump him if he agrees to meet:) Hahahah..okay seriously the man is married and I am just joking! I really respect his artistry...if we meet, i will let you know how it goes:);)

@anastasia7536 ..hahaha..that is soooo funny that you say that...I met with him for coffee in Milan a couple of days ago ...and he could not be more gracious and kind in giving me the inside scoop of the opera world...i wrote him a letter and left it in the opera house for him..and in one day he text my phone and asked me to meet him for coffee....what superstar tenor does that?? I dont agree with you...sorry:(

I think he's a great interpreter with a great, robust instrument, but I think he has some technical problems which hold his wonderful voice back sometimes. His talent, however, is undeniable. I hope he can get his technical difficulties dealt with, because I want him to have a long career.

Encore une carrière éclair due à une accumulation de rôles trop lourd; et les conseils de P. Domingo ( comme pour Rolando Villazon qui a brisé sa voix encore plus vite ) n'ont manifestement été d'aucune utilité : en 10 ans à peine, disparition des aigus.

And finally, what's so great about singing high notes? Anyway, the usual thing you see in the opera is a tenor who screws up the whole aria and is absolutely unconvincing artistically, BUT the one thing he CAN do is sing his high note. Opera is theater, it s a complex art, it is not about singing notes. And understanding this complexity makes Cura an incredible, memorable artist.

Besides, as someone correctly pointed out, this is a concert of Italian arias. This is really killing to the voice. You don't sing two or three arias with pauses between plus one or two duets, you sing arias for hours without interruption. In the original recording of Jose Cura with Domingo as conductor, I believe, he sings the aria in the original tonality. That means, he can, but does not want to that night.

So what if it's half a tone lower? It fits better the nature of his voice and he does not sound like a squeaking tenor, which I most like about him. Bizet had written Carmen for a soprano, then lowered the part 1 1/2 tones to make it fit for a mezzo - because he found the color of this voice much more suitable for the part. Did he make a mistake in following nature?

I know it's down 1/2 step, but to say it's not Puccini is just silly. In any key, that sweep and arch of the Puccini style is evident. And Cura is nothing if not a showman. The voice is glorious and he has great joy in his face and voice when singing. For me, this is what great vocal classical music is all about. Pull your noses out of the air you purists, and listen to this for what it is - a concert of incredibly beautiful music sung by an enthusiastic and generous artist.

Se ti piace e ti da emozioni, va bene cosí. A me dispiace vedere che la gente paga per andare a vedere uno che non canta come dovrebbe, perché cantare 1/2 tono sotto é barare. Kevin, is it me, or is there a lack of great tenors these days. Cura and Alagna, both burned early. Kaufmann seems a baritone to me. Ah, the days when DiStefano, Del Monaco. Gigli, Schipa, Bjoerling and so many others, made opera thrilling. Not now.
