I am currently building this exact motor and I am planning on attaching it to a HEAVY rocket which should not exceed 300ft. max altitude, do I still have to notify the FAA?
@solarover13 no only if you lounch above 6000 feet or use a motor G and above do you need to contact the FAA, but you have to be certifyed level 3 and have a license, other wise you have commited a fellony,
@Longway2fall We launched a fairly primitive rocket we built using a piece of 3 inch diameter aluminum irrigation pipe. I actually worked pretty well. I have a video of it posted on here.
And I agree about the altimeter. This ejection charge didn't end up working right when we launched, and the rocket came crashing down. Fortunately it hit the ground straight on and since it's aluminum no damage was done. I'd love to have an altimeter but we were on a very tight budget when we built this.
@TheBesiegers Ejection timers are fairly cheap, the timer starts when a G sensor registers the launch. Sorry about your rocket crashing! Be careful with materials like aluminum in large quantities. What are you using for the delay element between the core and ejection charge?
@Longway2fall I don't remember the exact ingredients. It seemed like it was sugar, potassium nitrate, and epoxy, but it was a while ago and without looking it up I don't remember for sure.

how do you increase the burn time on sugar rockets without sacrificing thrust? they burn out within a few seconds.

@kobasica I'm not sure. This was the only motor type we made, so I'm not sure what kind of alternatives there are.

@kobasica to increase the burn time make the motor fater and the core smaller i use a 1/8 in core works good on a 24 mm 2 inch grain

Nozzle size would depend on how much power he is looking for. Nice motor! Did you launch anything with it?
It would probably be easier to use an altimeter based ejection charge....

what throat diameter do you use?

The throat diameter is 7/16 inch.
