    They are attached to strings which are coming from the top...

    And they can only pull and push the strings...

    Not at all. This is an actual display at the BMW Museum in Munich. It was quite a challenge filming this as it was installed. To be fair, part of the video was sped up, as operating it at the speeds shown in the commercial is not possible.
