when you see tornados that look like its pitch black its because either the soil from that area is really dark or the camera at that time didn't have a high contrast colour
@PupuTheClown Yes. It touched down near Seymour and came into Wichita Falls from the Southwest. It went up Southwest Parkway, a very busy street in Wichita Falls. It destroyed the house my wife and I had moved out of 5 months before. My mom and dad were on SW Parkway when it came in and it almost caught them but Dad cut across a side road and got out of the path. 41 people were killed and damages were over 400 million. It was an F5 not an F4 as someone stated.
,,that is some story, I was near Tulsa in the 5th grade and I'm not certain if I remember it but we sure had our share of tornado scares, I remember one day the sky was red-pink and lightening was cloud to cloud constantly, it looked like Armageddon.
such a wild tornado ........amazing display of structure...the height of the laminer tube is wild and the angles on the sides display the perfect shear at work ... a terribly powerful tornado
I am 34 years old now and was 5 years old when this cell of tornados hit the area. I can still remember it to this day like it was yesterday. My father had a police and weather scanner and because of the weather clouds coming in we were out in the yard listening to the spotters and police when we saw the tornado come. We ran and took cover and when we came out the destruction was amazing. It looked like a bomb hit the area. Houses were totally destroyed. Many people died. It was horrible.
Brings back great, great memories. I was on the NSSL team that filmed that (I was taking slides) and this was the first of many tornadoes I've seen since. This was shortly before the days of video and was short on a Bolex 16mm movie camera. The reason it was only rated F-2 is that it didn't hit any structures...just tore up some cactus and mesquite treed.
This is the first in a series of tornadoes from the same supercell that hit Wichita Falls about an hour after these images were taken.
I wonder, in those days, how much advanced warning the people in WF had before this storm moved in.
Almost 30 years later here in Oklahoma if a storm shows any signs of tornadic circulation, there is non-stop TV coverage of the storm until it passes out of the viewing area.
In 2008, advanced warning is as good as it gets - at least here in OK.
One of the most evil looking tornadoes of all time, I would say. You can see why its successor did so much damage in Wichita Falls about an hour later.
damn! 1979! that was 32 years ago!
