@jwilliam, Sissel may have a very nice voice indeed by cross-over or pop standards. I have no way to judge pop / cross-over voices. It's a different universe. But this is not a pop song. Sure anyone has the right to make a famous classical piece into a pop song, if they choose, it's a free world, but in that case, it's no longer Grieg, and I have a right not to like it.
Sissel is often criticized by armchair opera "experts" for not displaying enough emotion when singing classical songs. These people don't know how to listen or watch. Her ability to express emotion through tonality is incredible and together with the expressiveness of her face, she communicates the emotion of her songs more clearly than any "real" opera singer I have ever heard.
But I have to admit- reluctantly-that she has a good voice indeed. And, besides, Bergensere is not quite like other Norwegians , are they? I love Holberg, so I'm inclined to forgive you. Holbergs father served at Fredriksten Festning in Halden, my home town. Yes I definitively can tolerate" Bergensere", but I dislike Møringer and Sogninger. Frekke folk! Fysj!
Okay, this person has a formidable publicity engine who is trying to make you all think she is the voice of the century, but please understand this girl is not a classical singer, but a pop/crossover voice, using a microphone. In comparison to a classical singer, her voice is limp, lifeless, colourless, the interepretation lacks imagination, nuances and shading, power, spin and shine. The accompaniment is also pop-ified. This is Grieg processed and pasteurized for mass market.
@furmitten Interesting that a page or two down in these comments an actual operatic tenor thinks she has, "Such a lovely voice … . I like her very much. She touches my soul...Bravooo!!!!". Other ignorant people like Placido Domingo and Bryn Terfel have made similar comments during their multiple performances with her. But now, thankfully, we have you to set us straight … Bravo!!!
@furmitten Your comment is comically idiotic. So Sissel uses a microphone, really ... you mean like the one clearly visible in every song she performs? And a 'publicity engine' ???? Sissel is probably the least-advertised singer of her caliber in the world.
@furmitten publicity engine? Well, I don't really know what you're talking about, because I was just surfing on Youtube to find different versions of one of my favorite compositions and I found this version. I didn't even know who Sissel was. I can say that this is the best performance I've ever heard. It goes right through my soul an makes me cry of joy. This is all what music is about and I don't care about theoretical stuff about some 'nuances, shading and power'. Sorry.
@Ramaz1969 - You've compared how many versions ? It's hard to compare apples and oranges. This performance uses a microphone, and a pop orchestration - and a pop singer. So ... we are comparing this to performances by classically trained singers without a microphone, and using the music by Grieg ? We don't even know how this singer really sounds without the technology.
@furmitten@furmitten Not very many, really. If you could give me the link to your favorite version, I'll be very thankful. Or at least better than this one
La musica y el canto son la forma mas pura del arte y la expresion mas directa de la belleza. Sissel y esa orquesta lo demuestran. Abrazo de musica, canto y paz desde Tucuman Argentina. Bravo sisselfan.
@achantus1 Most Southeast-Norwegians are proud that we have different "languages" here in Norway. The part some "hate" is the fact that we are tought both in school. It is difficult to learn two such similar languages for many people.
But, yes, she is singing in Nynorsk, a constructed language based on different Norwegian dialects, and not Bokmål, wich is mostly based on Danish, and that is the language we mostly use in Southeast-Norway. No one really speaks either one of them.

Wonderful Grieg, and Sissel.......wonderful interpretation.....her expression helps a lot to enjoy the song. when she smiles.......it comes the spring too
SISSEL'S VOICE IS PERFECT FOR GRIEG'S MUSIC...KIND OF MOURNFUL, YET VERY VERY SWEET.I FIRST HEARD HER SING AT THE OPENING OF THE WINTER GAMES IN L(?). I WONDERED...'WHO IS THIS BEAUTIFUL SINGER?' LATER A NORWEGIAN FRIEND TOLD ME AND I THOUGHT THAT THE WORLD SHOULD HEAR HER.
Extremely talented.. she effortlessly reaches very high tones; but definitely not the kind of music we like here in America...I love her lyrics, specially the pop songs of her, she shows intelligence in what she says.... why executive suits??? is that the formal for Europe or what??? I´ve seen that on a Lara Fabians video performing in Canada also...
@mannevit really? Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are all very much alike and they look almost the same when written...sort of, but Norwegian I think might be closer. Denmark is a shithole and the language is not as nice :P and yes they speak English I think in all of the Scandinavian countries.

Ella es muy hermosa y juvenil, e interpreta con sentimiento , pero... hay que escucharla con los ojos cerrados....Su belleza y el brillar de sus ojos están tan lejos de lo que expresa la letra de Varen ¡¡
Why is this perfectly marvelous vocal artist not singing at the Met instead of some of those barkers? Peter Gelb is proving to be a marketing master and a company manager disaster. Worse than Bing and (Edward) Johnson combined.
@jrtrmish Coz she can't be heard without a mic... she's got a lovely CROSSOVER voice... but she's not ok for live opera WITHOUT A MIC, like real OPERA singers.
She has a lovely light-lyric voice and very nice technique, with relatively little vibrato, reminiscent of Julianne Baird in her musical style. I do agree with the earlier poster who said that the performance sounded too cheerful, given the material; plangence and melancholy do not seem to come easily to her.
This well-produced video, subtitles provided, brings to a world-wide audience a beautiful singer, a beautiful language and beautiful music. - John Austin, Australia
Wow! I have never heard a more beautiful voice than this. This is the best version of Last Spring. No one can sing like Sissel. Her voice is not made of this world. This is an angel singing the most beautiful song made on earth. Sounds like heaven to me.
Sissel`s voice is much better than many internationally known sopranos and other big names. Her voice is perfect for classical music and songs like this.
I am a relatively new fan of her's. I have never in my life experienced such a surreal and captivating artist. I am blown away. I am convinced that her voice is divinely inspired. So crystalline and delicate, yet haunting and powerful. She truly becomes the music. Her facial expressions are priceless, it gives me goosebumps, she truly feels the music, and it shows. She is an embodiment of hope and love in humanity. This is the way it should be. This is true beauty through art. This is Sissel.
After listening to this performance, if anyone still thinks that Sissel does not have the Best Female voice of all time either has had a lobotomy or is on psychiatric drugs. Wow.
Okay, I get that people are touched by Sissel... I'd love you to hear this same piece sung by a superb classically trained soprano, without a microphone, like Karita Matilla.... and then tell me what you think.

prefer the bokmål version that grieg actually set, though i know this is now a popular song. not much expression for such a somber nostalgic piece-she smiles too much like she singing something else - her voice is very pretty though
the reason she's smiling so much is because she's doing what most stage singers call "flirting with the audience". it's one of the most important things about singing on the stage, dragging everybody in the hall into your performance. which is also why she never really rests her eyes on one set thing (except when she's looking straight at the camera), she keeps moving her line of sight.
it's one of the first things most singing teachers teach you, actually.
Great song, but does'nt think the singer is the best on this song... i think she has lack off feelings to it, at least that is what i think.... technical she is an very good singer, but after the most of the conserts i've been to i feel nothing when she sings. she have i good voice so i dont know why :s
Un detalle que llama la atención en Sissel es la pureza de su voz,sin afeites, sin modulaciones extra, directa, y sin esfuerzo alguno .
