Does anyone notice that the presentation style here is miles apart from what Apple does for their presentations? For instance, since Ballmer already has that slate PC HP on his hand, why not demonstrate how it works as opposed to saying "let's roll the video to see the HP"? That's dumb!

Ever heard the form = function argument. Slate PC with battery life of 4 Hrs and marketing trying to convince you it lasts for 11 Hrs? Having something that dies on you the minute you switch it on or immediately after is not replacing pen or paper, it is simply irritating. Hardware and software need to be amalgamated into something low power consumption and readable outdoors like kindle and readily rechargeable via solar, kinetics or power socket.

We should look the meaning of this presentation, where we see MS afraid of the new iPad, and the risk that this is for PCs. If Ms tries do to a fake new product to compete with a new one that they know that will knock the market, this is because the are afraid of something. Today we can see clear all of that, since iPad is selling a lot, and MS is not there.

@howardd21 Since HP bought Palm they are said to be shifting to Palm's WebOS platform on it. It could mean a re-design of the slate, including a shift to from the Atom to an ARM processor. One thing is certain, they definitely haven't scrapped the slate.
@arthmus01 - Palm devices simply don't have have enough market share to really warrant HP to throw out they millions they have spent on developing the HP windows slate device. Maybe later down the road once they have developed a Palm device both will compete with each other. One thing to keep in mind with HP is they re-engineer everything to death which is why the products cost more in the end.
@dhowser2008 Well HP have already thrown out the Windows slate, they cancelled it a couple of weeks ago and have already confirmed that they are re-developing the device on the WebOS platform. HP and Palm have a lot of experience with mobile platforms, and now HP own Palm the combination of HP hardware and Palm software should be interesting.
Personally i was looking forward to a HP Win 7 slate, but given the limited function of a slate device it wouldn't really compete with tablet PC's.

In the end, the apple lovers are the ones that have lost;regarding functionality and capability. I've had an Archos 9 since January, and I've been in love with it, everyone that has come up to me both at college and anywhere else ASSUMED it was an ipad, so clearly Apple is good at one thing; and that is stealing the thunder, excessive marketing. The Ipad-wouldn't allow me to make and receive unlimited phone calls over 3g for 35/mo, and search the internet at the same time, like the archos9 can.

This is not better than the ipad they have yet to give us a full run through of the product. No demos. Atleast apple gave the keynote which went through everything. Atleast when the ipad comes out you can go to the apple store and play with one as long as you want to figure out if u want one. Pc products... they have allot to hide. You don't know what you are getting till you take it home.

If you look at the keynote to the ipad. They practically go through everything and try to leave nothing missing . Here in newyork people hang out at the apple store to use the Internet I remember I went there and produced a full poster in photoshop , took three hours to do. You can't get that laidback enviroent at best buy.

And the have a genuis bar where you can get technical support right there. the computers are already installed with photoshop for the pro demos.. because those laptops are marketed for people in the professional market. I bought my MacBook Pro because it was a neccesity as a graphic designer. And I had more than ample time to test it out. Its definately worth the price.
well then you must not be a serious graphic designer, Even in academia in any graphics or arts classroom you will find a Mac to accomidate them. Excuse me? I'm not a serious graphics designer because I use a PC? My Quadro FX video card is far more capable of graphic designing than any video you card you can find in a Mac. I also use Solidworks to design, which isn't even made for OSX because so few people use it. Please don't try telling me your Mac is better for graphic designing just because Apple tells you it is. And also, I'm still confused as to what horrible things are "hidden" in a PC.
I'm just saying on a academic, macs have allways been the computer of choice when it comes to graphic design. The operating system was built to handle workflow better and also the algorithm behind the os renders color differently than a pc's so differently that it even prints differently. It's more about the language in which the images are represented. It has more to do with it than just a graphics card that you can upgrade on a mac just as equally because of the core processors being the same.
Colour pallet rendering is handled by the graphic drivers, not the OS. Professional graphics cards like Nvidia's Quadro series have advanced colour correction tools to compensate for screen/print differentiation.
Mac's have a larger market share in graphic design than any other industry, but they are not the dominant platform in the graphics industry.
I see where you are coming from but you have to remeber that the instructions sent to the graphics card are completely different for both operating systems they are different languages. When it comes to rendering things like dropshadow and translucency the Quartz composition engine seems to accomidate for this better. When I designs websites I can definately tell the difference of clarity between the two os's. .
It always frustrates me that prameters like transparency render differently between the two os's. The main objective of any graphics on the web from a designers point of view is to be able to see the same thing across any platform. All colors from my experience come out less defined and a little more saturated when I open those files from a pc. Things do print differently because of the os's even at the event that the graphic cards from different os's are completely compatible.
all the graphics card compensate for is the "what you see is what you get.", But my theory is thats not the root of the problem. When it comes to the rendering of whats supposed to be universal languages like html, css, rgb and cmyk. Creatively you can still get more from a mac. But I see that pc is starting to get it, and starting now to fix their os. I haven't uses windows 7 yet. but I will be getting a pc laptop for my egineering courses at the end of this month to see.
whats even crazier is, thousand of people come in that store everyday, 14st apple store for me....those computers stand tested, I think before I buy and I took all that into consideration. The thing about it is all their products..all of them even shuffle are on hands on display I don't expect the Ipad to be an exception So go in the store and play with it. Just to despise it and find out whats wrong with it. But its open, there is no hiding what it is. you know what you are buying.

But what would you compare it to? If you think about it any slate device that thin at this day in age would have just about the same specs. It cant run on hi gigherts like a regular processor because chip is smaller and moré energy efficient. You cant really compare its touch responsiveness till you get one in your hands but from what i've checked on the hands on demonstrations its god awful fast. Im an engineering science major. I understand the concepts of how processors work.

Todays computer market is all about content, from music to movies to Applications. The average person out there only uses there computer for social networking, email and online shopping which the iPad is one of the best at all of it! which is why it is right for todays market. I understand what you are saying, but the thing that will set the iPad apart is the UI the way you interact with the device is near perfect on the iPad also you are forgetting you could use the same argument on available apps on other platforms with over 140000 apps on the iPad at launch. Well I understand that the UI will be set up to work better for a tablet, but to sacrifice multitasking in the process? And while there may be a near infinite amount of apps for the ipad, I guarantee you there are far more programs you can download for free on a normal computer OS. Also, think of how many crappy little flash games there are all over the internet which the iPad won't be able to access. I'd say a majority of those apps are about the same quality as a flash game anyways.
I think the HP slate would be near perfect if you have the option to run a more table friendly skin over the normal windows 7, do you agree? i really think the experiance of using windows 7 on a small touch screen would be bad. I do agree that the iPad missing multitasking is a frustration but i think that will change. I really will not miss flash as its so buggy i am all for HTML5 in the future.

I wanted to test the overall productivity with its touchpad multitouch features. But that goes for everything they do. I tried using linux but my kids didn't like it. I know Windows has security issues but Windows 7 is the most stable of all other OS they have had in the past. I don't understand what the big deal is about macs. they have a very limited software and application library compared to PCs. It always seems like the yuppy hipster types use them as if it is trendy and rebellious. Macs are great for computer artist and amateur videographers but thats about it.

Why would you want OSX in the first place, Windows 7 is amazing in terms of speed reliability and compatibility. I benchmarked photoshop cs4 64 bit on OSX and Windows 7 with similar hardware and the results came in favor to Windows.

Its less useful than a laptop, less portable than something like the iPhone or Droid. And selling it as an e-book reader is crazy (too expensive, and the whole point is so that you don't have to look at an LCD screen while reading).

@dhowser2008 Well HP have already thrown out the Windows slate, they cancelled it a couple of weeks ago and have already confirmed that they are re-developing the device on the WebOS platform. HP and Palm have a lot of experience with mobile platforms, and now HP own Palm the combination of HP hardware and Palm software should be interesting.
Personally i was looking forward to a HP Win 7 slate, but given the limited function of a slate device it wouldn't really compete with tablet PC's.

In the end, the apple lovers are the ones that have lost;regarding functionality and capability. I've had an Archos 9 since January, and I've been in love with it, everyone that has come up to me both at college and anywhere else ASSUMED it was an ipad, so clearly Apple is good at one thing; and that is stealing the thunder, excessive marketing. The Ipad-wouldn't allow me to make and receive unlimited phone calls over 3g for 35/mo, and search the internet at the same time, like the archos9 can.

This is not better than the ipad they have yet to give us a full run through of the product. No demos. Atleast apple gave the keynote which went through everything. Atleast when the ipad comes out you can go to the apple store and play with one as long as you want to figure out if u want one. Pc products... they have allot to hide. If you look at the keynote to the ipad. They practically go through everything and try to leave nothing missing . Here in newyork people hang out at the apple store to use the Internet I remember I went there and produced a full poster in photoshop , took three hours to do. And the have a genuis bar where you can get technical support right there. the computers are already installed with photoshop for the pro demos.. because those laptops are marketed for people in the professional market. I went in the apple store a couple of times before deciding to buy mines.

I bought my MacBook Pro because it was a neccesity as a graphic designer. And I had more than ample time to test it out. Its definately worth the price.

Excuse me? I'm not a serious graphics designer because I use a PC? My Quadro FX video card is far more capable of graphic designing than any video you card you can find in a Mac. I also use Solidworks to design, which isn't even made for OSX because so few people use it. Please don't try telling me your Mac is better for graphic designing just because Apple tells you it is. And also, I'm still confused as to what horrible things are "hidden" in a PC.

I'm just saying on a academic, macs have allways been the computer of choice when it comes to graphic design. The operating system was built to handle workflow better and also the algorithm behind the os renders color differently than a pc's so differently that it even prints differently. It's more about the language in which the images are represented. It has more to do with it than just a graphics card that you can upgrade on a mac just as equally because of the core processors being the same.

Colour pallet rendering is handled by the graphic drivers, not the OS. Professional graphics cards like Nvidia's Quadro series have advanced colour correction tools to compensate for screen/print differentiation.
Mac's have a larger market share in graphic design than any other industry, but they are not the dominant platform in the graphics industry.

I see where you are coming from but you have to remeber that the instructions sent to the graphics card are completely different for both operating systems they are different languages. When it comes to rendering things like dropshadow and translucency the Quartz composition engine seems to accomidate for this better. When I designs websites I can definately tell the difference of clarity between the two os's. .

It always frustrates me that prameters like transparency render differently between the two os's. The main objective of any graphics on the web from a designers point of view is to be able to see the same thing across any platform. All colors from my experience come out less defined and a little more saturated when I open those files from a pc. Things do print differently because of the os's even at the event that the graphic cards from different os's are completely compatible.

all the graphics card compensate for is the "what you see is what you get.", But my theory is thats not the root of the problem. When it comes to the rendering of whats supposed to be universal languages like html, css, rgb and cmyk. Creatively you can still get more from a mac. But I see that pc is starting to get it, and starting now to fix their os. I haven't uses windows 7 yet. but I will be getting a pc laptop for my egineering courses at the end of this month to see.

whats even crazier is, thousand of people come in that store everyday, 14st apple store for me....those computers stand tested, I think before I buy and I took all that into consideration. The thing about it is all their products..all of them even shuffle are on hands on display I don't expect the Ipad to be an exception So go in the store and play with it. But what would you compare it to? If you think about it any slate device that thin at this day in age would have just about the same specs. It cant run on hi gigherts like a regular processor because chip is smaller and moré energy efficient. You cant really compare its touch responsiveness till you get one in your hands but from what i've checked on the hands on demonstrations its god awful fast. Im an engineering science major. I understand the concepts of how processors work.

Well I understand that the UI will be set up to work better for a tablet, but to sacrifice multitasking in the process? And while there may be a near infinite amount of apps for the ipad, I guarantee you there are far more programs you can download for free on a normal computer OS. Also, think of how many crappy little flash games there are all over the internet which the iPad won't be able to access. I'd say a majority of those apps are about the same quality as a flash game anyways.

I think the HP slate would be near perfect if you have the option to run a more table friendly skin over the normal windows 7, do you agree? i really think the experiance of using windows 7 on a small touch screen would be bad. I do agree that the iPad missing multitasking is a frustration but i think that will change. I really will not miss flash as its so buggy i am all for HTML5 in the future.

And you are right anywhere that sells pcs. But I think thats what sold me to buy it. They weren't afraid to let me try it out. they had it installed on there for something. I wanted to test the overall productivity with its touchpad multitouch features. But that goes for everything they do. Iphones that you can actually make calls on play games on and everything right in the store. like i said they are not afraid to show off there product. I tried using linux but my kids didn't like it. I know Windows has security issues but Windows 7 is the most stable of all other OS they have had in the past. I don't understand what the big deal is about macs. they have a very limited software and application library compared to PCs. It always seems like the yuppy hipster types use them as if it is trendy and rebellious. Macs are great for computer artist and amateur videographers but thats about it.

Why would you want OSX in the first place, Windows 7 is amazing in terms of speed reliability and compatibility. I benchmarked photoshop cs4 64 bit on OSX and Windows 7 with similar hardware and the results came in favor to Windows.

1) There's a cord that you can buy for all ipods that will let you plug them into a tv. You'd know this if you bothered to do some research.
2) The device is for use when you are away from home and want to watch a movie or play a game.

Like I said, there's a chord that connects to the headphone jack tat you can use to connect it to your tv. The headphone jack sends audio and video.

as u said that hdmi is a chord, I agree with u there. But I find HDMI in every home with a HD tv. While i spent 20 mins looking beside my tv and my home and i cannot find any adapters that support the iTampon. Dont need flash? Where the fuck have u been living for the past 100 yrs? U and pineAPPLE can't decide where i am gonna use it. TECHNOLOGY don't have a specific place to use it. For eg the Zune HD is supposed to be music playre for on the road stuff but people love it for its HD output.

I still dont get what the market is for these devices.
Its less useful than a laptop, less portable than something like the iPhone or Droid. And selling it as an e-book reader is crazy (too expensive, and the whole point is so that you don't have to look at an LCD screen while reading).
So what the hell are these things for?
(And: how is it that all of these companies suddenly decided in the same year that THIS is where the market needs to go? Very strange to me.)

The tablet PC market, has been one big monumental failure.

Yeah, you fanboys said that crap when Apple launched the iPhone. See how that worked out?
iPhone went from bottom to number 2 smartphone brand in the world. Windows mobile continued to fail in the market.
So yeah, there goes your favorite company..

This doesnt reflect the benefit of TABLET!! This is WINDOWS 7 Apple calls WINDOWS as PC , now windows calls itself PC , just a FOLLOW dog...
