I was reminded the other day that Derek Forbes left over disagreements about the musical direction of the band. Is ti any wonder - in the space of about 2-3 years they went from this musical and critical zenith to utter garbage. When Forbes recently and briefly returned his second departure was for the same reason. I think it is fair to conclude Forbes pushed the band into a seriously artistic and creative zone which Kerr and Burchill hated. Sad, so sad.
Yes I agree, But it also had to do with the don't you forget about me video..
I also love everything from 1984/78 of simple minds more then the 85/95 time 98-2002 was pretty good though very creative.. 2005 black and white was good though I find graffiti soul less creative then black and white
I always feel that this, and Hunter and the Hunted are a pair.. it just goes to show there isnt a wasted second or a wasted note on NGD, this was apparently about JFK, dont see it myself though....
I agree.. I still find sparkle in the rain good, but this is just a golden year for simple minds full of creativity and everything on this album is just right every note clicked
A Very Transcendent Track one of the Best from almost any 80's synth pop albums, saw the New Gold Dream Tour in Phoenix ,AZ late 82' at a small Theatre called Celebrity Theatre they were totally amazing
I listened to this album constantly in the 1980's. I saw the Minds three times between 1982 and 1983. It was tough getting to shows as I was under 18 and broke. This song brings it all back...
talk about sublime and the last 2 minutes is one of the amazing ends to a song i have ever ever heard ! i would put new gold dream up against any album ever made and it would wipe the floor with it ! unique in every way!!!
Totally agree! I only got into the Minds a few months ago and bought New Gold Dream - my best ever music purchase. It's perfect for chilling out with the headphones on and is well on its way to becoming my favourite album of all time!
One of my absolute favourites too, and I got it when it came out. This is maybe my favourite Simple Minds track. It has a floating quality that is very rare in pop music. On the top of my head I can only think of Without You by David Bowie. But that is a much more uninteresting track (although I love most of his work).
Thanks again for posting. Great music! Wonder if Simple Minds weren't the best band on earth in the early eighties...? So creative, innovative and productive.
forbes was booted oot for failing to turn up at rehearsals and womanising.
kerr did what anyone with backbone would have done and booted him out.
as for mcneil he was depressed playing keyboards and was not happy.

Only Derek Forbes can play one note for eight minutes and make it groove!
