I like his voice, but In my opinion his mistakes in interpretation here are that lot of staccattos that have not a lot of relation with the text and also that change of the tempo at the middle of the piece is wrong though the director maybe has no a clear time thing in his head or something. Well that's just a little.

Ok, first, to 1:09, piaNO, piaNO, teRRA, teRRA, sotto voCE, very emphasizes the end of the sentence. It is a mistake. Right is TErra, TErra, sibiLANdo - not sibilanDO. After just sings the notes. There is no interpretation of the text. This is not dramatic, is to be comic, this is not Verdi in dramatic opera. Finally, all wrong.

@contatolirico Yes you're right, The main thing here is the Comic, Il Barbiere from Rossini isn't that dramatic, and this Bass seems to be in relation with Verdi and Wagner Opera.

And always emphasizing at the end of the words is kind of wrong, it generates some unexisting emphasis on that notes.

@claudiooriental Chaliapin in the first half of the 20th century, Boris Christoff in the second half are incomparable :-) I was fortunate to see Ghairov live many times, he is an incredibel basso, but to me it's always Chaliapin and Christoff :-)

Christoff at the end of his miraculous career.  Known for his Russian roles, how easy it is to forget how excelled in every language he undertook. This is a superb rendition of one of the warhorses of the bass-baritone repertoire. If only we had him on film singing Mussorgski's 'Songs and Dances of Death'.....'The Flea,' 'King Saul,' 'The Wind is Howling.' Alas.....
